To entertain the little ones at my daughter's 1st birthday party, we bought a large blow up kiddie pool and filled it with plastic balls. We found the "ball pit" balls at Toys R Us. I think they were $10 per 100 balls. I got the idea from my daughter's ECFE class, and the kids loved it.

Hot beef sandwiches, you can get large quantities at Sams, or other grocery stores...mostly in the freezer section. Pasta salad, chips, fruit/veg tray.
You could also just do simple sandwiches (ham/cheese, turkey, roast beef, etc.) I am assuming its coming up soon or at least in the warm part of the year, do something that is light and quick...slow cooker meals are best. Either cub or Rainbow has pork tenderloin buy one get one free, normally eight dollars a piece, slow cook this all day, add bbq sauce and you have easy BBQ pork sandwiches.
Happy birthday to your little one.
You could also check out Chuck E cheese, I know, it sounds corny but they decorate for you, clean-up for you, etc. The games are only $25 cents each (tokens). YOu can buy a birthday package and its actually quite affordable when you break it down. You also dont have to worry about your house needing to be clean, and clean up.

My little girl will be 2 in September. For her first birthday, I had the same problem. I ended up calling around to hotels that had pools with a waterslide. I am not sure where you live at, but we rented a party room at the AmericInn in Shakopee. It was a wonderful day. They had a waterslide and a kiddy pool with a slide. They gave us a party room off the pool, and we ended up having the whole place to ourselves. It was VERY affordable. Only like 100 for the whole package (I think, it was almost a year ago). But look into other hotels maybe, It was great b/c all kids and adults of all ages were able to play and intertain themselves. Another ideas I had was to go to park and depending on the weather set up a slip and slide, have water balloons and or sguirt guns Or rent one of those blow-up jumpers to set up in your backyard!
Just some ideas! Have Fun!

I suggest doing something on the grill, hamburgers and/or hot dogs. They are really easy and usually the guys hang out together anyway. Why not make it around the grill!!! I have always just thrown together a tuna salad too, easy and cheap. Then just get some chips and make your own cake. There are so many cake designs out there, have fun with the cake!!! Having the party at a park is really nice too, because the kids can all go their own directions and they don't get too bored. I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!!!

D., this is a huge celebration! Your 27-weeker is turning 1! Congratulations on being a Mom for a year! My 30-weeker is 12-years old now, so I can relate to your wanting to celebrate.

Pick a theme that is meaningful to you. Our son had a little tiny teddy bear in his isolete with him when he was in the hospital. That bear kinda became a thing for me ... a symbol of how much he had grown. So, bear was our theme. Then, I made a cake and we had ice cream that we put into paper muffin cups earlier in the day and froze so that they were easy to serve. We had coffee and lemonade and bottled water (and diet coke for the addicts!). That was IT.

You don't need to entertain the others. Your son is the center of attention and you get to celebrate how far he's come. Make it easy on yourself. Be sure that someone else is taking video and photos so that you and your hubby can enjoy watching your son eat his first birthday cake.

This is an event for you to celebrate. Don't worry about the entertaining!

With my first child we did it at our house and did sloppy joe's and just hung out on the deck, had lawn games for the grown ups. But basically it is your sons day. With my second we had it at our house again and did sandwiches and just let the kids play and blow bubbles. Last year and this year we are having it at a park that way all the kids are entertained by the park and my one year old this Sunday will just be passed from adult to adult. I think in the end the park has been the most enjoyable especially if you have a lot of kids coming.

If you are looking to save some money, Lunds and Byerlys give away free first birthday cakes. All you need to do is go in a few days ahead of time and tell them what you want written on the cake. It is a rubber ducky themed cake. You also need to bring in a copy of your child's birth certificate for proof.

I don't have any other ideas for you but the cake was wonderful and free!

We just had my son's first birthday party and had the same thing. Lots of ages! We did party bags for the kids. They loved them. They were bubbles ($0.50 at cub), party hats, a noise maker, individual wrapped cookie waffers (at factory card outlet) and girls a necklace and boys a car. We put their names on the bags when they arrived and made a big deal out of the them! They were thrilled and cheap! We had pulled pork sandwiches, veggies, fruit, chips, and potato salad. It was a hit! Good luck. Do as much as you can ahead and keep it as simple as possible! Enjoy the day that is what is important with your child!
