18 Month Old with a Sprained Ankle HELP!

My son wouldn't put any weight on his foot today and would bawl. So we took him in and they found no broken bone. They think that it's probably just a sprain. So my question is, what things can you do for a sprain for a toddler. He of course won't put any weight on it, so I'm not worried about him walking. I have my stroller ready for us to use a lot, and I have my baby carrier so that I can carry him in it that way. But what about icing it? When I sprained my ankle ice was my best friend, but with a toddler I don't know how well he will take it. What things have any of you done to relieve pain other than Tylenol and Ibuprofen (it doesn't seem to help him much).

**Doctor said Tylenol and Ibuprofen and that was it. He was a very rushed doctor.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yup I severly sprained my right ankle. To this day it still hasn't healed properly. I now need to think of ways to keep his foot elevated.

Poor little guy, I don't have any advice besides more mom's kisses and hugs. Uuggg, I hate when doctors just rush, I get that they see tons of cases and have built though skin, and I think some are great doctors but they lose some sympathy.
I hope little Ollie is feeling better.

Oh that poor baby.....I hope he gets to feeling better soon. Yes, Tylenol or Motrin is all we can give them at that age. My son is 20 mos and that's all my doc advises too. Motrin will be better as it is an anti-inflammatory med. Tylenol just relieves a little pain.
Ice would be great on his ankle, but getting him to sit still is another story. lol Elevating his leg will help a lot and will relieve some pressure. When our legs are down, you can feel the throbbing of the blood flow, but when elevated, it relieves that throbbing. An Ace Bandage would help brace his ankle too.
Ankles are real sensitive. Have you ever had a sprained ankle? I have had about two or three. One time I had sprained my ankle so badly that my foot started to bruise up. It was awful. And once you sprain your ankle, the ankle is kind of weakened and is more prone to being sprained again if it isn't healed up all the way.
I hope your little one feels better soon. My kids haven't had a sprain yet, but if they ever did, I know I would go nuts, pulling my hair out, wanting to just wave a magic wand to me the pain go away.
Oh, and two, since he hurt his foot, he will be reluctant to putting pressure on it for fear that he will hurt it again. It will take some time. Hope this helps.

I would definitely ice it. If he will not let you do it while he is awake - wait until he is asleep and wrap one of those gel ice packs in a towel and put it around his ankle. It will help relieve any swelling.

Poor little guy - sprained ankles hurt.

Good Luck and God Bless

When my 12 month old fractured her ankle they also said just tylenol and ibupropen, and we had doctors who weren't rushed. We found that with her sleeping with her foot on a pillow, she was a little more comfortable. Other than that we dug out a lot of toys she could play with sitting still or at a lapdesk or on a breakfast in bed tray. Things like a peg board with hammer, cars on a tray, special markers, stamps, sticks, even finger painting with pudding provided a good distraction from the pain. Of course we also did a lot of cuddling and reading books and watching Max and Ruby and Mickey Mouse, and that helped too. Good luck and hope he feels better soon.

If there is no obvious swelling you dont even KNOW for sure what it is. Toddlers can do weird stuff. It probably wont even hurt him tomorrow...
It might be Severs Disease. Look that up. It's temporary.
