17 Month Old Won't Keep Her Diaper On!

My daughter has just figured out how to take her pajamas off. She unfortunatly also knows how to take her diaper off. I woke up the other morning and she was butt naked with poop in her crib. She has done this one other time, but no poop. Luckily she didn't play in it, but I don't want to wait until that happens!! Any idea how to prevent this? She does it during the day too.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So far so good! No surprises in the morning! We have started potty training, but she doesnt tell us when she has to go, she just goes in the bathroom when we go. Gonna start working on that this summer! Thanks everyone!!

I had the same issue with my daughter and I put her diapers on backwards which worked for awhile. Good luck!

It might be time to start reading her signs as to when she's ready to go potty. That way, she won't get the diaper dirty so often in the first place. Try some training pants around the house when you're there with her. Also, Google some stuff about elimination communication. It's never really too early to start. I recently met an 11 mo. old boy who is almost (mostly in public actually, not so much at home) potty trained. Good luck!

We had this problem and ducked taped them on during nap/night time. I have heard of people putting them on backwwards or making sure they are wearing onesizes over top to make it harder to get the diaper off.

Been there done that!!!! My mother in law told us to put a onsie on backwards.... it's short so makes it harder to reach the snaps. Worked for us.

My mother in law does has an in home daycare. She has had a few children do the same thing. Before she puts them down for a nap she puts a pair of training underwear over the diaper, then puts their clothes back on.

consider potty training. have her sit on the potty at different times during the day, especially if she seems uncomfortable in her diaper - obviously, she doesnt want to be in the diaper, and thats a good thing.
girls are usually easier and earlier trained. just go with it! this summer you could try the running around naked bit and see if that assists the process a bit - thats what IM waiting for . :D

anyway good luck!

You may just have a kiddo who likes the freedom! All of my kids were like that and I just let it go. When there are people around, they tend to be fine with having clothes on. In the long run, it is easier to potty train when they are naked, too.
I also had the child would would remove clothes and diapers at nap time and spread poop everywhere, Every. Single. Day.

You can put duct tape around the diaper for naps, which you will need to cut off, but they can't get that off. Also, if you get jammies with no feet you can put the jammies on backwards so she can't reach the zipper. I just cut the feet off.

Duck Tape LOL

Seriously duck tape the nighttime diaper on, then put the pajama's on backwards the snaps or zipper in the back, that will solve your problem.

My girls are 14 months apart, but were both still wearing diapers at the same time and started undressing at night and during naps. We tried taping on their diapers, which worked (but we had to put the ends of the tape toward their backs). Mostly what worked for us was to put "footy pajamas" on backwards - you have to put the feet on first then twist the rest of the garment around - and then we'd zip up and pin the zipper at the top, because with two of them in the same room, they'd unsnap/unzip each other!

Never tried putting a onesie on backwards, but I could see how that might work. I also like the idea of the swimsuit - that's a really good suggestion! Good luck!!

Hi J.
My daughter did the same thing, we ended up putting a one piece swimsuit under her clothes, because she some how could still get out of the clothes even when they were backwards. The swimming suit was tight enough that she neede help to take it off. we only did that for a few days and then she stopped trying. Good Luck T.

My daughter didn't start doing this until about 26 months, so quite a bit older. It's been going on for 2 months now, and we've just started telling her at night that "if she keeps her pajamas and diaper on, she gets 1 M&M in the morning". It has worked every night(4) since then. Not sure if your daughter is old enough to understand, but worth a try. If not a fan of candy(I'm thinking I might want to change the incentive), try something that is easy, quick and she really wants or likes. Good Luck!

My (now 19 month old) did the same thing since she was 15 months old, ( she even took her diaper off while sitting in her high chair with her pajamas still on!) I got her a potty chair and pull-ups and my oldest daughter and I take her potty whenever we go and she has not done it since! The only time she takes her pull-up off is when she is getting ready to go potty! Good Luck and I hope this helps!

All of my boys did this at some point. I just put the diaper on backwards. Little tougher for them when they can't get at the tabs. But, still not impossible.... so a onesie backwards is another great idea!

Try zipper pj's and put them on backwards. She (hopefully)won't be able to undo the zipper.

We talked about this at ECFE.

Possible solutions:
-Put her in one peice outfit instead of pants and top. Layer with a onsie.
-Put diaper on backwards so the tabs are in the back
-Use pull up so it is hard to take off
-Use duct tape over the tabs of diaper

My daughter did this as well. And I remember oh too well how disgusting it was. We went out and bought a lot of onsies. There are a lot of cute shirts out there that have the onsie affect with the snapping in the crotch. This seemed to deter her becuase she couldn't get the snaps undone. They eventually grow out of it. Good luck.

We bought a "Blank-Eaz" wear-able blanket from One Step Ahead. It's like a sleep sack, only it has legs with open foot holes. Super comfy and durable. And the best part is it zips in the back--my son absolutely can't take it off.
