17 Month Old Allergic to Alot!

My lil man was cursed with allergies! He gets severe diaper rash when he has dairy, eggs, peas, or apples. Now whenever he goes outside his poor eyes get really blood shot and itchy, in addition to a runny nose, and the sneezes. My doctor recommended allergy eye drops and Zyrtec but they don't seem to be doing anything. I prefer a natural approach to life but I'll do whatever to help my poor baby. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

HI Tiff,
I would recommend seeing a good naturaopath/homeopath. A much more healthy, safe & hollistic approach to allergy solutions. I have a great one around Denver. Take care!

LOL, ok just checked. Denver is a bit far for you ;0)...But you can always find one closer to you.

I would suggest you take him to a pediatric allergy specialist to have a prick test done. Yes, it can be done on kids as young as your son. It might reveal some subtle allergies that you were not aware of. And an allergist could help you determine what products/foods to avoid. Allergy shots are a pain, but actually work very well with young kids. Good luck!

Hi Tiff. First, I would like to commend you for being a single mom. That must be challenging. As a baby, I was allergic to everything- literally, everything- food, pollen, animals, dust, chemicals, you name it. The doctors wanted me to live in a bubble and my mom wouldn't allow it. Over the years I grew out of a lot of the allergies, but still struggled with my pollen allergies. About 3 1/2 years ago I found a liquid supplement that literally changed my life. I now am enjoying my second Spring and Summer without allergies because of taking this supplement. I am truly amazed. Plus, I was really worried about passing on my allergies to my daughter. She is allergic to a couple of foods, but that is all and she has already outgrown her shellfish allergy. She is not allergic to animals, pollens, grasses, or dust and I owe a lot of that to this supplement, too. She has been getting the benefits since she was conceived and then through breastmilk. When she turned 1 I began giving it to her directly (I waited because it has honey) and she loves it! If you are interested in trying it with your son, email me at ____@____.com completely safe, as it is food, its liquid so its easy to drink and it tastes like black cherry juice so little ones love it. Good luck and I would love to hear from you.

My niece and nephew had similar problems when they were young with eggs, milk, soy, and a couple other things. Their parents avoided serving them those foods for several years, and have been reintroducing them with no problems now that they are older (except the kids just don't like the flavor of cow's milk now, but they like it as cheese, yogurt, or baked into things).

As far as outdoor allergies go, I have heard that eating locally-produced honey can help. Apparently by digesting bits of pollen and nectar from the local plants, the body begins to recognize those products and not fight against them. This is a very old method for fighting allergies that I have heard from a lot of sources. http://www.pioneerthinking.com/to_honey.html

Allergies can come from outside or inside the body. You typically have to try eliminating the issues one at a time. The tough part is that one allergy, even a food allergy, can make it hard for his little body to fight other sensitivities. I would steer away from the products that aren't natural, but that's just a personal preference. I applaud you for being so careful about what he's exposed to! If you ever want information on Arbonne products (botanically-based, pure, safe, beneficial products for all ages), please contact me at www.feelpure.myarbonne.com.

Hi there,

I don't know much about the food allergy thing, but my daughter who is now 3 has had pretty bad allergies the last 2 years. Recently, I heard about using local honey and oh my gosh that has helped out more than you could ever imagine. I am telling you last year, she would walk outside and instantly her nose would run and her eyes would water. She is a completely different child after trying the local honey. We use about 1-2 tbsp a day and it works like a charm.

Good luck to you!

find a chiropractor in your area that does cold laser therapy. I have always struggled with allergies and the cold laser therapy has made it so that I don't live on my allergy meds. I don't know if it will do anything for the food allergies or not but his outdoor allergies can be taken care of this way.

Make sure you are washing his hair and have clean bedding on his bed at night. My son was having severe allergies when he would go outside and someone told me that the pollen sticks to your hair and clothes so if you sleep on your pillow without washing your hair your allergies are not going to improve.

The zyrtec is working for my son, but I've heard that the claritin is better for not making them drowsy you could try it and see if it works better for you.

Good luck

I would take care of all the things you could do, like laundry soap, cleaning products, body wash, and see where you are. The store I have found this year has great products that have no bleach, ammonia, or other harmful chemicals and work great.

Saline mist may help the nose, use before you go out.

You should be able to call your pediatricians office and ask a nurse with out having to set an appointment.

Good Luck

My suggestion is to try and find an asthma/allergy doctor. My son had black cirlces around his eyes for ever. I took him to a pediatrician that shared on office with asthma/allergy doctor. Those black circles were allergy shiners. His nose was alway stuffed up and could never get the snot out. I tried saline spray and he would scream. After a prick test to determine the allergies the doctor gave us Rhynocourt nose spray and told us to give him Zyrtec. He said the Zrytec is best given right before they go to bed. The Rhynocourt is a steriod spray but it doesnt hurt and sting like the saline spray did.

Allergies can also trigger asthma as I found out first hand. I was coughing and weezing and thought I was dying. After 8 weeks of being treated with cough syrup that wasnt helping,I was sent to the same allergy doctor as my child. They performed a prick test and amazingly I was allergic to the same outdoor elements my child was. Since it was misdiagnosed and mistreated my airways were almost totally blocked.

Good luck.

The best way to deal with allergies at this point is avoidance. Obvoiusly avoiding foods that trigger allergies is a lot easier than avoiding pollens. Also, it sounds like the food "allergies" are not true allergies but he is definately showing a sensitivity to certain foods. Usually if these foods are avoided completely then reintroduced at a later time children no longer have the sensitivity but if you continue to give them to your son now they could develop into allergies. There are a lot of products available to help you to make your home less prone to retaining possible allergens. I would also suggest seeing an allergest. The most "natural" way I can think to deal with allergies as severe as your sons would be immunotherapy (allergy shots) I'm not sure at what age they are recommended but having the testing done and finding ways to treat the symptoms until that time comes would be a tremendous help. Benedryl is approved for children your sons age, Children's Claritin is approved for 2 year olds but if you talked with your sons doctor he may be able to help you with an appropriate dosage. Try to avoid any steroids (most nasal prescription nasal sprays contain steroids). If you opt to use Benedryl, try to time the dosages about an hour before naps or bedtime so he can sleep off the drowsy side-effects.
