17-Mo.-old Soaking Through Cloth Diapers at Night

Does anyone have good suggestions for night-time diapers for my toddler (17 mos.)? We have a bunch of BumGenius 3.0 pocket diapers, as well as prefolds (and some wool covers and some pro-wraps). We've tried putting a prefold into the pocket in the BG 3.0, and doubling prefolds with a wool cover. Either way she wakes up with her PJ's smelling like urine. We'd like to figure something out without really having to buy extra diapers. I appreciate your suggestions.

When it got to a certain point we had to start using a disposable over night, cloth just wasn't cutting it in the overnight department.

I'm not sure what sort of inserts go into the BumGenius (we use FuzziBunz), but we've had to double inserts for some time for my 18-month-old. A bit bulky, but I don't think it's an issue at night. I also bought some hemp inserts to add to the inside of the diaper - still thin, but quite a bit more absorbent. You may not need to buy new diapers, but you might benefit from investing in a couple of good inserts. Check out any of the baby stores like BeByBaby or BellyBum for help.

My 15mo daughter is also a very heavy wetter and I have had a really hard time tyring to keep her dry through the night. The diaper combinations that have worked the best for me are either Hemp Prefolds layered with hemp doublers, Swaddlebee Velour OS Fitteds or Little Beetle Organic Hemp Fitteds with an extra doubler. No matter which diaper you use, I have found the key to staying dry is to use the Happy Heiny So Simple Covers! They are the bomb of all covers for nighttime and they keep her dry throughout the night. If you have any questions, I am happy to speak with you more as I have a cloth diaper store in Chicago called Bellybum (it's listed under the mom owned stores ;) I would also be happy to put you in touch with our cloth diapering specialist. Good luck! E. S

I second limiting liquids in the evening. At that age we only gave our son about 4oz of milk at dinner and then nurse right before bed. We also used an overnight disposable diaper at night. It worked for us. Have you tried to use one of your cloth diapers, then double up with an "old school" cloth diaper (or rag) folded at the top around the waist (or wherever it is leaking) and then put plastic training pants on over that? Sounds like a lot, but it might work. Good luck!

What works for us is using 2 hemp inserts in my 12 month old's Bum Genius pocket at night. He still nurses twice during the night and wakes with dry jammies in the morning. Hemp inserts aren't too expensive and seem to absorb significant amounts after several (mine took about 10) washing and drying cycles.

porbably not what you want to hear, but we use a disposable at night for our girl. None of the many creative things we've done with cloth seem to work at night.

Also, try limiting liquids in the evening. I know my son at that age drank a lot of bath water.... If you can limit what she drinks at and after dinner (consider moving your nursing, if you still nurse, to before the bath and reading a book afterwards, for example)

Before you limit liquids think of how you feel when you are dehydrated and decide if you want to deal with your children in that state...my oldest is a total crab if she's even a little off on fluids.
Also it's bed time, if they're thirsty they won't sleep.

We do a prefold and a hemp or microfleece doubler (outside of the prefold, not against the skin) under a Dappi pull on pant, covered by a Prorap. It works on both of my heavy wetters (a 15 month old girl and a 28 month old boy). We rarely have leaks, and they both sleep for 12-14 hours.

We've been testing out potty training ever since our daycare provider told us it was possible! So right before bedtime, I'll usually put our little guy (14 mos) on the potty to get any pee time out before bed.

We use Fuzzi Bunz diapers, so for nighttime we put an extra hemp insert in. No problems at all! I purchased the hemp inserts from Be By Baby in Roscoe Village.

R., our second soaks through at night. What has worked is using a g diaper (it's not cloth but the inserts are a bit more environmentally friendly than standard disposable) with two inserts, and a Dappi pullup over that. Seems like lots of people have had success with hemp inserts, so maybe I'll try that with our prefolds. It would be cheaper than g diaper inserts!

I gave up. We use disposable at night. I tried everything I could think of, and she still woke up wet. She's been waking up drying, so I'm hoping that soon we can go back to our BG.

Whatever you do, don't buy other diapers. I did that and they didn't work any better!
