16MO Spitting Out Drinks

Has anyone had a child who will let their drink run out of their mouth? My 16 month old daughter has had this constant problem since she began drinking from sippee. She was breastfed and went straight to a sippee (while still being bfed) at about age 9mos. She will drink some and then let the rest dribble out over herself, and whoever or whatever she is around. I keep thinking she'll get over this as she gets older, but she's 16 months now. My son never had this and I've never seen anyone or heard anyone complain of it. She will also let her food drop out of her mouth if she has too much on her plate. If anyone has any advice for how to teach her to keep her drinks in her mouth. The food's not such a problem as it doesn't always require an outfit change. Thanks to all.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys, I'm including the pocket bibs in next shopping trip. Thing w/ my daughter is, she isn't doing it for the effect, she just does it when she's had enough to drink. I guess as time goes on she will figure out how much is enough and cut herself off. Thanks to you all for your great advice. :)

Our son did this but he did it when he drank from a straw...AND he found it hysterical to let the milk/water spill out of his mouth. When he did it, I would take away the drink and tell him, "No Jacob. That's not nice to play with your drink like that." He would cry from me taking it away and then I would tell him to "Drink nice." Sometimes that would work, but sometimes he would do it again and then I would take it away and not give it back.

Good news...he doesn't do it anymore and I don't think it lasted that long.

Good luck.

Hi Nancy,

You are not alone. My 12 month old does and has done the same thing for months now. I also work at a daycare and a lot of the babies do it. I think it's just fun to them. My son, and the other babies, can drink without spilling too. I really think it's just a game and I hope he will grow out of it soon. I'm sure the same goes for you daughter.

maybe she just likes the sensation...Be glad LOL...my son used tolike to make himsdelf throw up by sticking his fingers inhis mouth...and then he would laugh at that age...Keep a bib and grubbies on her...she'll get through it. In another couple of months she'll really start to get the "big girl" concept and yo u could probably psh that aspect of things with her.

My kids have done this. My first son did this ALL the time. He'd let drinks dribble out of his mouth all the time and he'd ALWAYS let food fall out of his mouth if he decided he wanted a sip to drink while he was chewing, saw something else on his plate he'd rather eat at the moment, or for whatever other reason he decided he didn't want that bite anymore at the moment. He'd do it primarily with food and sometimes with his drink. My second son doesn't do it with food but does it ALL the time with his drink now (he' 15 months), I think just for something to do or for entertainment value by the way he looks at us when he does it. :) Another child I watch also does it with her drink all the time. She's 13 months. Not that big a deal with the right kind of bib. It's a phase that will pass, lasting just a few months at most I'd say. I love the snap scoop bibs. We got ours at Walmart. They are scoop bibs, like the bjorn ones, except they are a softer flexible plastic, so have flexibility of a fabric bib for comfort. They have snaps to make the scoop, so they store flat. And you can wash them in the dishwasher or wipe them clean. I LOVE these bibs. They catch everything and are so easy to clean. I hope this helps.

These are the bibs we have. The only difference between the bibs is the size. Our almost 3 year old still uses a stage 1 often times because he likes the monkey on it. They are great bibs, perfect for this stage! :)
Hope this helps!
