HEy Ladies, i always get great responses from you guys and i have another question. I have a 15 month old that had one runny stool on monday and tuesday of last week. No big deal, thought it was from the juice or something he ate. I monitored it and it was not that bad. He had his well check and got three shots on thursday. Doc checked him over and he was in the 77% for his weight and he has always ate great. The runny stools got worse this weekend and i am curious if it is from the shots or if he was getting sick and the shots lowered his immune system. He stopped eating . I started giving him probiotics and i will see if that helps. My question is..... Neighbors have had the "hand, throat, and Mouth Virus" and i don't know what it is. Could this be it? i googled the virus and runny stools was not a symptom. thank goodness. i try to keep my kids healthy, but i feel like we need to be in a bubble to do it Is it the shots, virus, or His teeth? i am so stressed over my child. Is it just me or had this year been horrible for bugs? i have two boys and my infant is the only one who gets sick. Any support would be great. I want to start trying to plan for another baby and i just feel so sad that i am doing something wrong. Thanks you guys.... Ps:i read reactions of shots and loss of appetite is a side effect but not runny stools. He does have 1 molar that has not come in yet, and he has been very sensitve during the whole teething process. He seems to have ALL the symptoms and every tooth brings these out.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

hey ladies, well turnes out that my little guy did have the hand foot and mouth thing. He got blisters on the bottom of his feet and that confirmed it all. Also, doc said that one of his shots was the chickpox vaccine and that brought blisters out because hand foot and mouth is in the same family as chickenpox. nothing cna be done and i just have to ride it out.

Every time my kids teeth, they get diahrrea and diaper rashes. Especially molars. If he doesn't act sick, just keep him hydrated and keep his butt covered in diaper cream. Give him plenty of water, or very diluted juice. Keep his diet simple. Did he try anything new about that time? If yes, cut that out and see if it helps. If he didn't have a fever or seem sick, most doctors will go ahead with vaccinations because it is important to protect them from worse illnesses (they can be fatal in young children). It is possible that if he was getting sick already, they could bring it out faster. His loss of appetite could just be from the heat, same with the diahrrea. So just give him lots of love and keep an eye on him, keep him hydrated and don't worry too much!

no HF&M comes with a rash, It definatly sounds like reactions to the shots. I would just ride it out, if he runs a fever over 100 more then 3 days t hen call the doc back but he's probably ok.. Don't over analyze it your'll drive yourself crazy. I NEVER take my daughter to the doctor unless she is super ill or needs her check up....she's super healthy and we've been super lucky. He'll be fine.

Hi J.,
I have a two year old son who is having the exact same reaction right now. I stopped giving him dairy and fruit and took him to see the pediatrician, but all they told me to do was try Immodium AD for kids and to see if it helps. I tried the IAD one time, it worked for three days (I still kept him off of dairy and fruits the whole time) and then I gave him carrots which produced the same runny stool. I have no idea what it could be, my daycare thought it was rotovirus (which you have to be vomiting profusely as one of the symptoms) and the pediatrician said that definitely wasn't it. At this point I am just as lost as you are, and I have been looking at other blogs for this very same thing and not one person has given a solution to this problem. I have seen more moms asking about this and not one doctor that any of the moms have gone to have been able to correct the problem. If you find out anything helpful, please let me know! I would appreciate the help as well.

No its not from the hands mouth and foot diesease trust me my son has gotten that a few times. Unless he has blisters (they look like white head pimples) in his mouth around his mouth, on his hands or his feet. Plus they usually get a fever.. It most likely is the shots or teething... My son never had signs of teething until he got in his molers and that was horrible. He didn't want to eat he had runny stools but after a few days it got better. Just watch what he is eating and try the brat diet it helps. Good luck

Hey J.,

First of all, let go of the guilt, girl! Kids get sick despite our best efforts, and in the long run it isn't all bad. Kids are still building their immune systems, and getting sick occasionally actually helps them build it. I, too, put my pride in the health of my children and took it really personally whenever they caught something. Then I put my daughter into preschool 4 hours a day 3 days a week, and my infant son didn't have a chance. He caught every bug out there last year. He didn't keep them for long, but we did have one hospital stay for rotovirus. I bet your kids don't get sick as often as most. You are not doing anything wrong except obsessing. Relax, sister! It's hot, nobody feels like eating as much in the summer. If it continues for a long time, ask you ped. Otherwise, believe that it will pass, and give him an extra wipe or two.

Take care,

Al

Hi J.,
Quit beating yourself up!!! Keeping kids healthy is not something we alone have control of. There are some tidbits of info that could be helpful that I will share.

First, I am amazed at how easily drs give vaccines to kids today that are not 100% healthy. When my oldest (and she is the only one that received vaccines) got hers, if she even had a bit of a sniffle, they would not give them. They said it was important their immunity systems were strong. The vaccines can and do impact the immunity system...as the vaccines are injections of the diseases so that the system will fight it. The more subjected to things the harder the system has to work. Sometimes it might be more than the system can handle, and the person becomes ill. Thus this could be what happened to your son.

Teething is yet another "stress" to the body. Each stress has the potential of weakening the body and its immune system. This is why we often see babies with runny noses or loose stools when they are teething.

The probiotics are one of the best things you could do! Keep giving them.

Yes, he could be getting sick. Basically, his system may be out of balance. How to bring it into balance? Rest, probiotics, highly nutritious food, love and attention! Polarity, cranial sacral therapy or even chiropractic could help restore his system to balance. You can also lightly massage his body, esp his feet.

I would keep any highly allergenic foods from him until his body is stronger again. No sugar or processed foods either. Don't worry about his appetite, his body needs to focus on healing, not digestion. Babies will generally start eating when it is healthy for them to do so. Make sure he gets enough fluids, tho. Cook some veggies to make a broth for him, offer him sips often. Cooking carrots and celery, straining, and drinking the broth is good to replace the electrolytes. Nettles tea is highly nutritive, too, and would be a good choice. Chamomile tea would be good for his digestive system. Even just sips can help, if he wont easily drink it.

Each child is different, as you know, and how each reacts to stressors in their lives is different. Some people are born with strong immune systems, while others' are easily compromised. If we had it all figured out, there wouldnt be any sick people! :) There are ways to help strengthen the immune systems, some of which I mentioned above. Herbs are also helpful. For example, Astragalus can be an easy way to bolster the whole families' systems by adding it to stew, soups, casseroles, or other foods that cook for a period of time. Remove it before serving. This is best used when we are NOT sick, however. There are other herbs appropriate for bolstering the immune system when we are already sick. Echinacea is one. Seek an herbalist if you are not knowledgeable about what or how to use them.

No one likes to see their child sick. Hang in there and keep watching him like you are. If he gets sicker or is sick too long, seek further help. I hope some of these suggestions are useful. Blessings to you.

if you are writing this in june ---his not eating may be contributed to the heat and if you giving him water and he is not eating the runny stools would be from him not eating. if he is not eating but drinking eough do not worry. unless I missed it you didn't mention if he acted sick. my kids dr used to tell me all the time that kids can be alright to not eat even for several days as long as they drink. sure offer them food but do not force them to eat. this will cause more troubles. it has to do with something but I forgot what he specifically said. has something to do with something as minor as they can't eat and grow at the same time. and they will eat when they need to. he told me to always offer them food at meal time but not force them to eat---- but to not offer them to eat while they are playing. at 15 months he is old enough to join you at the dinner table -- make him sit at the dinner table with you and not let him be distracted with playing.

ok back to the runny stools I would not contribute them to the shots because he only got the shots on thursday.

I would say as long as he does not act sick I would not actually worry about it but monitor it. just continue to pump the fluids in him so he does not get dehydrated. pedialite would be a good thing to give him several times a day. he will eat eventually. offer him his favorite non junk foods til he eats

Hello J.,

The runny stools can be from the teething or it could be a food allergy of some sort. I do not think you are doing anything wrong. It could just be he is more sensitive to something than your other child is. Every baby is different and so sometimes if you do everything the same with both kids one will react and the other wont. Do not feel too bad, but I would look at anything new that has been introduced to him that could possibly be the problem.
