14 Year Old Taking BC Pill - Will Side Effects Go Away?

Long story short, my 14 year old has been having awful periods every 3 weeks or so for the last year. This is a change from what her cycle had been for the first 3 years of her period. After several doctors and many tests, an Adolescent specialist wants to try her on the birth control pill to give her body a rest from the close together periods and the pain she's been having some months.

She just started her first pack on Sunday and the very next morning, she woke up at 5 am sick to her stomach. It continued for a few hours and finally went away when she got out of bed and ate something. She will try to soldier through, but I remember not being able to take the pill many years ago because I literally had to pull over to the side of the road to throw up some days. If she can stick it out, will the nausea eventually go away or is she stuck with it? Do different types of the pill have less side effects for some people?

What can I do next?

Call the dr and possibly get a different pill.

The hormone level could be too high or there could be an ingredient she's more sensitive to.

My daughter is 19 and has been on the bc pill since age 14. Her periods were nonstop and cramps were so bad that she would miss school. It took 2 different RX to get the right match for her and things have been ok ever since. She takes the pill at the same time every day and not on an empty stomach.

Good luck.

Have her try taking it with a meal on a full stomach.

And if that doesn't work, her dose may be too high, and a different pill may be called for.

I'd ask the doctor or his nurse about the throwing up and if it will stop. I do know that different pills can have different ingredients or same ones in different configurations. It is possible a different pill would not cause her to throw up.

I agree that you should talk to the doctor about an alternate brand. Good luck.

Double check on whether the pills should be taken at a different time of day, with food or without. Ask the doctor but also remember that your pharmacist is a great resource. I work with a number of pharmacists and find that they often have at least as much current info as the physicians. It may also be that a different prescription would cause fewer side effects. It's very individual.

You should call the doctor if she's having the same experiences you are. It may be that she needs time or that she needs a different pill or a different dose. My sister and I didn't take the same pills.

Sometimes the side effects go away, sometimes not. If they continue, ask her doctor to try a different formula pill. My daughter went through four different brands before she found one that worked for her.

I remember when I first started it, I was neasous and sick for the first month, then I was okay after that. But I would call the doc and see what they suggest.

She should be sure to take it at a consistent time, and also eat something, so it's not being taken on an empty stomach.

Just make sure she is not taking the Yaz bc's. A lady that I work with daughter took those and now has several blood clots on her brain. She just came home from the hospital after being there for 5 weeks. Just research the pill she will take before taking them. I had to take the pill at 14 for irregular periods and I know it was low dosage. Just research first. Good luck!!

I too was 14 when I started taking birth control. It was horrible - my periods were AWEFUL - I would have diarrhea and vomiting AT THE SAME time the first two days of my period and I would bleed for 7 days straight.

it took 3 months to get me on the right one. I would NOT give my daughter Yaz. I would have the doctor start her out on the lowest dose possible to see if that works.

It took 20 years, but I was diagnosed with PCOS - which I believe is a "dump all" answer when they can't explain why your body isn't "normal" (i.e. like 90% of the women in the world).

I would tell her to take the pill on a full stomach as well try one week in the morning and one week in the evening to see which works better for her. Have her keep a log of how she feels, weight, etc. unlike every other woman on the pill - I lost weight and stayed stable until I got off of it.

Good luck!

I would call the doctor and mention it and see what they suggest. Keep in mind that this could be a coincidence. It's quite possible she just has a stomach bug or had an upset stomach for another reason. But definitely mention it to the doctor. There really are many options for her, so it's very possible for the doctor to give her another one to try.

A different pill might be in order. I took the orthotrycyclin (or however you spell it) for a couple of months but I was so sick to my stomach with it I got switched to something with a lower dose (Alesse was what eventually worked for me.) I was fine after that. I would talk to her doctor if it's still happening in a few days.

I second the remark on the Yaz...

Assuming this isn't the Yaz, I'd give it one month and see if she adjusts to it. If she continues to feel like this, you need to get the doc to try a different pill. Yes, there are different types of pills. The last one I took is called Mircette (the brand name - there is a generic.) I never had nausea with them, and this particular one doesn't drop you off the estrogen cliff every month like most...

Just wanted to tell you how sorry I am that your daughter is having these issues. I started at 9 and have a whole host of reproductive issues. I think contacting the doc ASAP is the right step. It seems like her body is reacting horribly and I don't think that's necessary when there are multiple scripts out there.

Because of my long extensive history (won't bore you with) I wonder if a visit to an endocrinologist might be in order or a reproductive specialist. My daughter started with thyroid issues and because of the adenoma on my pituitary gland and other things I decided a pediatric endocrinologist was in order. The endocrine system is so complex I decided I would never mess around if hers started to go wacko. I believe the years of switching my birth control etc. contributed to the mess my body found itself in years later.

Blessings as you navigate this with your daughter.

Have you considered the Nuva Ring? My friend can't take regular birth control pills and she had no symptoms or side effects from the Nuva Ring.

It comes in a refrigerated box and you keep the rings in the fridge. When it's time to start a period it's removed from the vagina. Then the period happens and then another ring is inserted.

I had the problem as your daughter as a child. My mother took me to a fertility doctor and since I was 13 started me on Provera. I would have to count the days and take it only for the 5 days before I was supposed to get my period so that I didn't clot and have such excruciating pain that Id have to stay home from school. My reason was that I would only clot and never flow. There could be other reasons for your daughter that should be looked into. My fertility specialist obgyn didn't believe in putting a child of 13 on the pill for many reasons. When I was 17 and started having intercourse I switched to the pill but it had to be one higher in progesterone to deal with the clotting issue.
I wouldn't put her through the morning sickness, it seems like a crappy trade off. Talk to the dr. or get a new one.

If it continues, I would bring it up to the doctor. Maybe a different dosage is in order? My 14 yr. old has been on bc pills for almost months and she (luckily) has not had any problems like what you are reporting. My daughter was put on them for her periods also.

Best of luck!

Talk to her doctor abut taking a lower dose pill. She can also try taking it at night before bed so she can sleep through most of the nausea.
