14 Month Old Won't Keep Shoes On

My 14 month old recently started walking.Ever since he was born he would never keep shoes, slippers or socks on.Not too uncommon I'm sure. My problem is I just got an expensive pair of Stride Rite shoes and they have one velcro strap. He constantly pulls on the strap and pulls them off along with his socks. Any one have any advice on getting him to leave his shoes on. Several times I've left a store and realized he was missing a shoe and these shoes are too expensive to lose. I had a hard time finding a shoe to fit his foot and these fit great and they are so cute. Any help would be great.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I went for the cheapie slip on Bobux type shoes at Target ($12.99)very cute.My son keeps them on and is not tripping over his feet as he did with the Stride Rite shoes. Also got a pair of tie sneakers there as well which seem to work out fine, double knot of course. He couldn't get them off! Thanks to all that replied.

The only one that stays on is Robeez, available at Stride Rite or online at robeez.com. They are the best and totally worth the money.

Well, my son is 2 and a half and we are still working on this issue. I let him go barefoot a lot in the summer and keep an extra set of cheap ($4) rubber clogs in the car --he jumps in puddles more often than we lose a shoe. I do pick my battles and don't bother to put shoes on if we are going from car seat to stroller or cart. In the summer he can walk to the car barefoot. When he was turning 1 I had a stroller size zip up blanket (like a mini sleeping bag) and he could go around in socks even if it got cold. Now he walks most of the time and the rule is if we are outside or in a public place he has to wear shoes (otherwise he rides in a stroller or cart, sits in a baby seat at a restaraunt, etc.). He much perfers the freedom to walk so he is getting better on wearing shoes. Many times he has taken his shoes off at the park over and over. I have told him he wears shoes or we leave and then made him leave a few times (tanturm and all) and he is starting to do better. Sometimes this issue drives me crazy (such as when we have to hunt for a missing show in a store) but then again I would rather go barefoot myself when I can.

I used to get stride rite because my son has wide feet and they are hard to find shoes for...now I know you can get wide shoes from Payless on their website...that way it is not so heart breaking when they lose shoes. I wouldn't put them on unless he can't reach his feer. Bare feet are best. This too shall pass...GOOD LUCK!

That is the main reason I never buy velco shoes. Tie shoes are much harder to get off. Our pediatrician always reccomended bare feet as the best walking shoes and, children should only wear shoes when their feet need to be protected. I would reccomend Bobux slippers as they are very hard to get off, stylish leather and are good to run around in while inside. I have no other advice for you regarding the velcro shoes, they grow out of them so fast next time I would get lace ups. Stride Rite makes great shoes but they are pricey.

I would second the Robeez! Dylan is on his third pair. We just bought him some first walkers from Stride Rite but just to go outside. We double knot them and so far so good....

Most of the time he is in Robeez.

Hi S.
I wouldn't sweat it out. If your child doesn't want to wear them in the store, fine, leave them off. When he's home and trying to walk around, try to keep them on him then. I was always told anyway that bare feet are best when the babies start to learn to walk. If you really insist he have them on while you are out shopping, perhaps just get his mind occupied with something else. Does his stroller have play things attached to it? I know kids love balloons so if you can get a hold of one while shopping, that will surely keep his mind off the shoes. Again, don't sweat it out, it's a phase. Good luck and relax.

Try Robeez brand shoes. They are a little pricey in shops (around $26) but you can find gently used or new in package on ebay. The shoes are washable leather and soft soled which doctors recommend for toddlers learning to walk. They have elastic around the ankle so they can't be pulled off easily by your little one. Take a look at their website http://www.robeez.com/EN-US/default.htm?Lang=EN-US&Pr...=

Hi S., I have the same problem with my son and he's 2! He will not leave his socks and shoes on at all! As soon as I put them on he takes them off! Write now it's ok because it's warm out, but what about when the cold weather comes! I'm going to try buying shoes with laces maybe they will be harder to get off! Good luck! I'll let you know how the laces work!

Hi S.,
I know just how you feel. My daughter is 13 months and has been walking since 10 months. We have tried everything and will not keep shoes on at all. We have just deceided to go with the flow and keep the shoes off. We hope that when it gets cold out she will want to keep the shoes on so her feet stay warm. She has figured out how to get tie shoes off and even shoes with buckles. She is just very determined to be barefoot. I can't blame her since I hate to wear shoes myself and would rather be barefoot. It's just a phase that they will grow out of soon.
Best of luck,
J.

I think it's just a phase. In the meantime you'll probably have to keep track of his shoes. My girlfriends son was playing outside with my children in our back yard and must have thrown his shoe over our fence in the woods. We searched and searched for that shoe only to find it five years later. They were the Stride Rite shoes. I was mortified to have to call my friend at work and tell her about the missing shoe. She just bought them for him. Well she still has the shoe as a momentum and now we laugh about it but it's not so funny when you're going through it.

hi S., i would get crib shoes like robeez, bobux, jack & lily etc. they arent great for walking around outside a lot, but perfect for in the house or in the stroller. they are better for developing feet, which should ideally be barefoot or in socks or soft shoes unless you're outside and need to protect them. they are about $25 - $30 a pair, but you get to keep them! and the socks too! plus they can go right in the washer and dryer. they are soooo cute too. i like the jack and lily or the bobux the best, though the robeez are more popular. they all have websites, you can find some of them in stores, especially robeez, but you can usually get them a bit cheaper on ebay. you can also get shoes with laces instead of velcro. i never got velcro ones for that exact reason. get laces and double knot them.

S., I had twins and it was always a challenge to keep shoes on. They would both play with their shoes and it was a impossible to keep track of them. It took me 20 min. one time to find a shoe. The best advise I can give is leave them off or as soon as you see the shoe coming off take both off and put them in the stroller. Let them play with socks they are less expensive. This will not last forever. Just enjoy they get big so fast.
