13 y.o. Needs to Volunteer

My 13 y.o. daughter needs to volunteer for her membership in the National Jr. Honors Society. We are looking for ideas. She loves animals, babies, and craft activities....maybe something involving one of those? She would also have the ability to tutor math for a child. We're not church-goers, so no opportunities there. We live in n. Plano (Custer & Legacy). We tried the SPCA in McKinney, but I'd have to volunteer with her, and my allergies would be miserable. The Plano city shelter requires that you're 18, according to the city website. Ideas are appreciated.

What can I do next?

M., I found this on Parkland Hospital's website. I realize your daughter isn't old enough right now, but since this is a summer program, she may be the right age by summer 2009. I hope this helps! God bless! S.

Summer Program
If you’re a student living at home for the summer, we have a special summer program that may be just right for you. Summer volunteers must be at least 14 years old. High school age volunteers may help out Monday thru Friday, 8am to 4pm, while college age and older may volunteer 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Summer Group Orientation begins in June.

To Find out more about becoming a volunteer at Parkland, call our Volunteer Services Department at ###-###-####.

We are doing the same thing for my 13 yr old daughter with NJHS. It is my understanding that 12 of the 24 hours (due by April 09) have to be done at school. Many of the teachers are willing to help out with that one.

My daughter already got a couple of hours for volunteering at the Grand Opening of the Children's Medical Center, Legacy.

I believe they can also volunteer with other schools...we were given a form to sign up for an elementary school's fall festival for credit.

As for the rest of the hours.....I am anxious to see the replies here as well!!!!

Good Luck to your daughter!

Maybe you can look at nursing homes? My favorite volunteer position was working at a nursing home. How about working with horses, or at sop kitchen? especially with the Holidays coming up there will be plenty of opportunities i think.
Good luck :)

COntact the Collin County Volunteer Center. They will be able to tell you what agencies take kid volunteers and what kind of work she would be doing. It will save you some time.
