When I turned 13, my Dad gave my twin and I each a pair of 14K gold stud earrings that he picked up while in Spain on Navy training.

I second the nice piece of jewelry option.

I also think you could go with her and spend however much money you would spend to buy her a 5 year CD - show her how much you are spending and how much it will be worth in 5 years - on her 18th birthday when she is an adult.

When I turned 13, I got my ears pierced. We got to pick out a really nice set of earrings for me to wear after I had the "balls" in for the requisite amount of time.

I say a nice piece of jewelry...earrings or necklace...

There's a great site I've used to help with gift buying. www.gifts.com. They have a personality profile (right side of the page) and it asks who you're shopping for, age and then 4-5 questions about the person. Then it gives a personality of the person and gifts that coincide and are different prices.

Jewerly and clothes are always good. Credit cards they can use around their friends also cool. Tickets to the movies or shows.
