13 Month Old Wakes up with Soaked Diaper and Wet Pajamas Almost Every Morning!

My 13 month old is waking up almost every morning - sometimes too early - wet from the top of his diaper up his stomach. His diaper is completely soaked, too. We were using Pampers cruisers size 3, so I just moved up to size 4 because I thought a bigger diaper would help, but he's still leaking. He's average weight(23 lbs) but tall(33 inches) - not sure if that makes any difference with diapers. His bed time routine is bath, pajamas, books with a small cup of milk, brush teeth, and off to bed, so he has a new diaper within 30 minutes of going to bed. I'm not interested in limiting his liquids, so is there a better diaper for night-time? Is there a secret way to put on diapers? I know he would sleep later if he were dry, and it's a pain to change crib sheets every day! Any ideas on how to keep him dry at night would be appreciated!
Thanks!

So What Happened?

I found the Huggies Overnights at Kroger. They were even on sale! No wet diaper last night - yeah! The next time I'm at Babies'r Us, I'll pick up some Diaper Doublers to have them "on hand" in case this happens again in the future. Thanks for your suggestions!

My son peed through his diapers all the time. When he wa sa size 3 and under he wore Pampers (the first stage ones)because they were the only ones he didnt pee through. ONce he outgrew those kind I tried the cheap White Cloud diapers and they worked wonderfully. You can get them at WallMart. Crazy to think they work but they do for him and he would wake up with pee all the way up his front too. He occasionally still wakes up wet but thats maybe once a month or less. I couldnt bring myslef to pay for the Huggie Brand....tooo expensive.

Hi A.,

Go to Babies-R-Us and go back to the diaper aisle.
Look for a baby blue package called "Diaper Doublers". They're 2.99 (at least they were last year when we used them.)
They work great; they are inserts for inside of his regular diaper. We had the same issue with our son (who, by the way, was also tall) but never did again after this inexpensive fix!

Best Wishes!

A lot of people have suggested Huggies Overnights. If his current size in overnight doesn't work, try the next size bigger in overnights. Also, try dressing him in a snug-fitting onesie under his PJs to see if that holds the diaper closer to his skin to prevent leaks.

And to ease your middle of the night sheet changes, double sheet the crib (during the day) so the layers would be like this- mattress, waterproof cover, sheet, waterproof cover, sheet. That way if your DS does leak in the night, you need only to peel off the wet top two layers and put him back down.

Our son had leak through issues too but we did finally find a combo that worked for him. I hope you find one too!

Hi, A.. From a family full of girls, it was learn and burn for me. Boys pee pee alot different than we do. They can go up and out of the dipaer and make you wonder how on earth did they do that!!! I have had the same problem with both of my sons. Fold down the top portion of the diaper in towrds little man's tummy; just about half of the fuzzy part where the velcro tabs stick on. Then secure the diaper snugly but not uncomfortably tight. It has made all the difference for me. My nurse at the hosptial told me this trick at the birth of my second son. leaks may still happen but it will be considerably less. To save yourself from doing laundry 24-7, take a beach towel and fold it in half. Tuck it across his mattress where the leaks usually happen. At least you'll only have to wash a towel instead of his complete bedding. Hope this helps, Miss A.!

Hi A.,

I know Huggies makes a Nighttime diaper and I've heard good things about it from other people - personanlly I've not had to use them so I don't know for sure. The other thing you could try is putting plastic pants - that are made for cloth diapers - over your son's diaper at night. That should help keep all the wetness inside! I use the plastic pants over a disposable diaper with my son when we swim...the swim diapers are too expensive...and I've NEVER had a leakage problem!

Hi A.,
I had the EXACT same problem with my son and it pretty much started at the same age. I did try limiting liquids and that really didn't even help. My pediatrician just said that some kids totally release their bladder at night when they are completely relaxed and that's why he was soaking every night. You are absolutely right, changing sheets every morning is a big ol' pain!! Anyway, what I found that works... Huggies makes a night time diaper that is WAY more absorbant. They are called Huggies Overnights. I use those on him and he was still leaking through but now only about half the nights instead of every night. So I also added some vinyl pants that he wears over his night time diaper. You can buy those in a 3 pack at Babies R Us or in a 6 pack at Walmart (walmart of course is a little cheaper). But that seemed to finally solve our problem for the most part. Occasionally he will still be wet out of the top of it all in the mornings on his belly but it's finally down to about once every couple of weeks. My son is now 22 months and we are still doing this but I've noticed in general he's not as soaked as he used to be. I think that maybe he just needed to grow into his bladder a little. Good Luck, hope this helps!

Have you tried a different type of diaper? It seems to me that different diapers can absorb a different amount. You may also want to try putting the diaper on a little bit tighter around the belly. We have the same problem from time to time and it is really frustrating!!!

She has been good so far in the cruisers though. I have read alot of post for the overnights... Maybe those would work. I personally didn't care for Huggies brand.

A few months ago my daughter started having the same problem and my mom said to switch to Luvs, which I was suprised because I always figure the more expensive the better (I know stupid) and I switched and have had a dry night every night since. Right now Target has huge boxes (size 3 with 92 diapers each) for $15. If you buy two boxes you get a $5 gift card to Target.

My son used to be the same way, however I changes his routine a little. We had the same routine you mentioned about but I put the cup of milk b4 bath and then kept the rest of the routine. Once my son is done brushing his teeth I usually change his diaper and then off to bed he goes. I also found that using walmart diapers "white cloud" are the best for my son. You just may want to give him is milk a little earlier. Good luck!

We had this problem off and on during the whole first year. Every time it happened we would just switch brands and it seemed to do the trick. I think as they're growing their bodies change shape and the diaper just doesn't fit right anymore. We went back and forth through Pampers, Huggies, store brand, Luvs, back to Pampers and that's currently where we're at now.

I really like Huggies Overnights (not to be confused with the Goodnights training pants). My daughter (God bless her) often sleeps for 10-12 hours straight, and the Overnights have NEVER leaked. Hi A.,
I have two boys age 4 and 2. My 4 year old is now potty trained but I went through the same thing with him when he was little. I never had luck with Pampers and switched to Huggies but Huggies overnight are heaven sent. I am not into limiting liquids either, I let them drink whatever they want, they even both take a cup of water to their room with them if they wake up thirsty. I do still occasionally have an issue, epescially on the days my two year drains his cup of water before morning he may still be wet. But 90% of the time we are good to go. I have even used them for car trips etc so I know he will make it to the next pit stop before needing changed. I found Wal-mart to have the best size selection and price on overnities. Regular Huggies coupons work on them too. Good Luck!

If you can't get rid of the bottle or a drink before bedtime...cut out sugar intake especially close to dinner. I don't let my kids drink past 5:30 and they go to bed at 7:00. That has really decreased the amount of accidents that happen at night. Mine are older than yours, but that is a good place to start. If the urine is foul smelling you may want to have them checked by a doctor, because a urinary tract infection will increase the urine output as well.

Hi A. -
We had (and still would have) the same problem with our little boy, but it helped to use Huggies night time diapers plus a product called a Diaper Doubler. Just make sure the night time diapers you get show a picture of a boy on the package, as the ones designed for girls have extra absorbancy on the bottom instead of at the top where boys need it the most. The only place I've been able to find Diaper Doublers (they look like maxi-pads) has been Babies R Us, but perhaps there are other places. Best thing about the Doublers is that they're really cheap!
Hope this helps!

We had the same problem too. I found that Huggies Nighttime diapers work really well or Huggies Natural Fit. With his Huggies diaper we also use a diaper pad. These are almost just like maxi pads that we bought at Babies r Us. They help to absorb more pee, so he stays dry at night. I think a bag of 30 of these is about $2.99, so it is well worth the investment. Changing the sheets and diaper pad every night is not fun! Good luck.

We had the same trouble with both of our boys when they were about the same age as your baby. We used cloth diapers 1. it was more economical. 2. It was more environmentally friendly. 3. My second son got a bad rash with disposables. (Yes, most people used disposables when our boys were babies, though it was 20+ years ago.) The point is though, we would put an extra cloth diaper folded mostly in front and we had no more wet bed issues. Of course, baby needs "plastic pants" over the cloth diaper. Anyway, this may be too old fashion for you and that is fine. I just know that it worked for our boys. Good luck!

Peanut butter before bed. A spoonful of PB is said to keep you from needing to pee for a long period of time. This is a old wives tale that someone told me while potty training my kids through the night. Granted I don't remember expliciately trying it but I have to say they did eat a lot of it in general and we didn't have potty problems. However, on the flip side I monitored their liquid in take after dinner because of that reason. I can remember very few times that we had diaper explosion through the night and it was either the result of the diaper being too small or child sick and needing extra fluids. So I really don't know if the tale works but the women that told me said it worked on all their children. ~Good luck dear~

I used Pampers Diapers but I had a girl. I also used the big bed pads under her butt. Is he fully tucked in ? They make special pads for beds to absorb the wetness, wonder if they have them for cribs. I know , changing a baby and crib every night gets old. I even hate bed changing when my daughter is sick or has a accident outside of her diaper. Perhaps he is sweating in addition to the wetness. What about the plastic pants to go over the diaper? I use night pull-ups for my daughter. Not sure if they have night diapers for infants. I hated Huggies diapers even with moving up a diaper size. Maybe is just goes more when he sleeps. Have you talked to his pediatrician? There might be an underlying bladder issue.

Try Huggies Overnight. They are great. If you can't find them locally, you can order them through Amazon.com or Diaper.com. Regarding the waking up too early, I did a little trick with my son that worked. We were using yellow panel curtains in his room. So by morning his room was pretty light and he thought it was time to get up once he woke up with a wet, leaky diaper... I added dark blue panel curtains on top of the yellow ones. His room stays darker now. When he wakes up too early with a wet diaper that leaked, I go into his room, very quietly and I don't talk to him, I pick him up, get him on the changing table, take off his clothes, cover him with a soft small blanket (so that he won't get cold), then I wipe him off with a wipey, dry him off, put a new diaper on him and a new pj, give him a little bit of water (cause he is usually thirsty when he wakes up) and I put him back in his crib. At first, he fusses a little, but when he sees his favorite stuffed animal, he starts to cuddle with it and relaxes again. He also has some musical toys in his room that I turn on for him and he goes back to sleep after a bit. I was surprised to see that it actually worked putting him back in his crib and I've been doing it ever since. I can usually get another hour to hour and a half of sleep out of him. Sometimes even longer (just depends on how early he woke up).

I had the same issue. I also tried the larger sizes and it worked but seemed so huge on my daughter. I found Pampers Cruisers Ultra Absorbancy at BJ's Club and they work like a charm. They say it is 12 hours absorbancy. We love them but hate that we only found them at BJ's. Good Luck!

Huggies overnights are the only diapers that worked for us in this same situation. We tried larger diapers but still ended up with an early wake-up to a wet bed. Our son is 21 months now and hasn't had a wet morning since we started with the overnight diapers at 12 mos.

I would say you are using too big of a sized diaper for one thing. My daughter weighs just 23#, and I tried a sample size 4 that I had and it was way too big and she leaked all over.
I use either Walmart brand, or the Aldi's brand size 3.
I always try to pull out the elastic around the legs after putting on new diaper. If the elastic gets folded under or inside of the diaper, then it makes it really easy for leakage.
I know you don't want to cut back on liquids, but I would suggest to at least cutting back to just a few swallows of milk or water before bed.
When I was potty training my 6yr. old, she was waking up at night a lot having to go, and once I cut out drinks within an hour before bed, she rarely gets up at night.

My son was waking up early b/c he was wet also and I realized that it was his pajamas that were too small, not his diapers! The tight clothing must have been squishing the shape of the diaper or something and causing a leak. We retired those small pjs and no more leaks! That's all it took for us to correct the problem.

I understand I hate the thought of limiting liquids also at night time. I am one that only gives my child water to drink at bed time. My daughter wets about 2 diapers a night. So what we do is set an alarm for the first diaper time to change and then reset the alarm for the second diaper change. We even tried the slowing the drinks down but she still had wet diapers and jammies and sheets.

I tried the thing of going to the next size larger (she is in a size 4 pamper baby dry diaper), the size 5 were like huge on her. she would just roll right out of them. plus she is one that she sometimes in the middle of the night before the alarm will wake up and take the diaper off and throw it away and then come and wake us up for a new one to be put on. (she will not sit on a potty at all) We are not pushing it.

This is the only way that we have found to keep our lil' one dry at night. Yes, she is almost 2 and it is not fun having to get up 2 times a night to check her diaper. But you have to take the good the bad and the ugly while being a parent.

good luck

Hi A..

I had the same problem with my son, who is now 18 months. When I weaned him at 16 months and started giving him a cup of milk before bed that's when he started waking up soaked! I also used size 4 diapers at night hoping it would help. Since it didn't, I had to start using the over night diapers that Huggies make(also in size 4). The only trick I use is to fold the top of the diaper down toward the belly a little to create a pocket. I also try to limit water after the afternoon snack but still give about 6 ounces of milk right before bed. Occasionally my son is a little wet when he wakes up but dry most days. Hope that helps!

My daughter didn't have the soaking issue every night, but it seemed that some days she did wake up with an overly wet diaper. I just switched from Crusiers to Pampers Baby Dry, and it is like a world of difference! I like the absorbtion MUCH better with the baby dry. There also isn't any lint on her bottom with the baby dry. That was one of my biggest pet peeves with the crusiers. hope this helps! Goodluck!

Huggies Supreme Natural fit worked better for my son, he also was tall for his age and the pampers just didn't keep him dry either. Hope this helps, L.

We found the same to be true for our little guy. While Pampers worked wonderfully for our daughter, it was not so with our son. WE found Huggies to be a better brand for our little guy. Try them, if you have not already, and see if that makes a difference for you. :-)

Hi A.....I use Huggies Overnight diapers. My son is two and wears a size five. Overall, I have found Huggies to be more absorbant than Pampers. Especially the Cruisers...they are good for daytime, but not for night. Of course, I swear by Huggies....so...
Go to http://www.huggieshappybaby.com/products/index.aspx?uri=d... to find out the size you need and then http://www.huggieshappybaby.com/products/index.aspx?uri=d... to find out where you can get them (I know I have to go to CVS to get the size five overnights). I have never had a problem with soaking through. Also, I find that if I hike the diaper up so that it covers his belly button (or close to it) the diaper absorbs better (as boys tend to pee higher up in the diaper than girls, I think anyway.) That way the diaper has a chance to absorb more in the front.
Good Luck!

Hi A.,

My DD wore nothing but Pamper's (swaddlers then cruisers) but for nighttime, nothing beats Huggies overnights. They are GREAT! I think you can find size 3's at Wal-mart, but most places carrying them starting at size 4. I put the 4's on my dd when she was wearing cruiser's 3, and they worked great. She is a little over 2 now, and still wears them at night, and it is VERY RARE that we have any leakage. The change in diaper style / brand hasn't irritated her either. Buy 'em, trust me, you'll love them!

We had a foster son who did the same thing with Pampers. We switched diapers until we found one that held it all. It seems like different diapers work for different kids. My daughter wore Toys R Us generics without leakage problems. For my son, it had to be Luvs or there were messes. For the foster son I was talking about, it had to be Huggies or I regretted it. All of this was figured out by trial and error. You may have to experiment with which works best for your little one, but there is one out there that will do the job.

We were having the same issue. Huggies makes an actual night time diaper now. It is in a purple package. I believe it starts with size 4. They are a little more pricey, but they work and last a while b/c you only use them once a day! So far, I have only seen them at Wal-mart. Good luck!

Hi A.,

Those boys!

I've used Huggies Overnights for my boy, plus when he was an infant I used these diaper inserts found at Babies R Us (mentioned in another response.) When he got a bit older, I put a pull-up over a diaper at bedtime!

He's 3 1/2, potty-training, so of course that means night-time pull-ups for my guy!

But overall, for him and his 2 sisters, I've preferred Luvs the best. They seem to conform to the body's shape the best (holding everything in.)

This might come off as extremely odd, but my only boy is 12 yo now, so it has been quite some time for me. My first thought was if he is peeing the top of his diaper, maybe he needs to be pointed down, but I wasn't sure if he was old enough for that to be possible or matter. The other thing I would do is put on a diaper as the last step before turning out the lights and put one of those plastic training pants on him over his diaper or the very thick training underware over the diaper. Even if you try a new brand. That should hopefuly eliminate some of his wetness discomfort and cut down on stripping the bed every morning. Hope that helps some!

You might want to try Huggies OVERNITE diapers. I also used Pampers Cruisers for her regular diapers. Limit the drinking before bedtime also. Cut it off at a certain time, give him a little while after to go in a regular diaper, then right before bed, the nighttime one. I give my daughter 1 bottle at bed. My daughter also overflowed almost everynight. I'm not sure if they have smaller sizes or not, Or if it's just Toddler / Potty Training sizes. But I've been using those in size 4 & 5 since, and she has very few overflows. I get them at Babies-R-Us or Target.

Huggies overnight diapers work wonders! I have used them for all my kids and am currently using them for my ten month old. They can be hard to find though. Babies R Us carries them consistently. Good luck!
