11 Month Old with Strong Smelling Urine

I just noticed that my 11 month old little boy's urine is very strong smelling. I can't really describe what it smells like, but it's strong. I'll think he has a full diaper b/c it smells, and usually, it's just a little bit. Any idea what this could be a sign of? He's breastfed, although I'm weaning him, but he mostly drinks water.

What can I do next?

At 11 months he should not be drinking mostly water. It should still be breastmilk or formula. After 12 months you can start to introduce (hopefully organic) whole milk, which should be his main drink with water being introduced as well. It could be his fluid intake is making the smell but some children also simply have a stronger odor than others, just as adults do. I'd ask you ped to make sure.

I'm guessing that he's not getting enough liquid. You might want to hold off on the weaning until he's over 1 and then do it very gradually so that he can adjust to the water (or other liquid replacement). You have to keep in mind that by the time someone is thirsty, they're already low on liquids.

Hello,
I have 2 boys who are 2 and 3. My second born also has strong smelling urine. And strong smelling poops, more than my 1st born ever did. They are both healthy as can be. Neither is fat, perfectly healthy. I'm not concerned about it. I guess it's just the way God created him. I would say, don't worry. Unless something in your gut is telling you there's something more.

Can you call your pediatrician's nurse to ask questions? Sometimes strong urine is a sign of an illness (diabetes comes to mind). If the pediatrician isn't concerned, I wouldn't be. As long as your son gets enough water, it should be okay.

It could also be a sign of kidney reflux. It's when your son urinates, and a little bit goes back up into the kidneys through the open "flaps" that are soppose to close but didn't.

He hasn't been pulling at his ears has he? My daughter had strong smelling urine awhile back, and she had an ear infection.

Is he taking vitamins. I know the pedis usually prescribe polyvisol w/ iron after 6 months for breastfed. Sometimes vitamins make urine smell strong.
It could also be something he ate. I know asparagus will cause strong smelling urine.
All the other post on here aslo have good ideas.
Definately increase the breast milk and water.
It is a good idea to call your pedi nurse if you are concerned. My is always very helpful and free for the call.

Good job breastfeeding at 11 months! First of all...what are you eating? Keep in mind that everything you ingest he ingests. There are ways a chiropractor can muscle test the breastmilk and make sure that your diet is balanced for him. I would start there. I completely disagree that your baby should be on formula or especially cow's milk! Those are definitely things to avoid. Let me know if you want more info!

Usually when urine is strong smelling, dark in color and in small amounts it means that the person is not getting enough fluids. Make sure of the amount of water he is drinking and if you are weaning him try to insure that he is getting enough water or other liquid to replace the lost fluids from the breastmilk.
