Good morning ladies. I have a problem that is scrambling my brain. My 11 mth. old has been breastfed and wont take a bottle, sippy cup NOTHING ! Well my breasts have had it. She has started sucking so hard that she draws blood. I'm cracked and bleeding and I'm done. I've tried to be patient and introduce formulas. She eats like a champ. It's just I'm very worried that she will only drink water, and not much of it. It's 6am and this is her second feeding I'm skipping. She has again flat out refused a bottle and a cup. How long should I wait until I should start getting very worried. Everyone I've talked to says that when she's thirsty enough she'll drink. Well I know her very very well and I think she has my stubborn streak. And that is in a nut shell why I'm so worried. HELP !!

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

A friend of mine had to use desperate measures....she handed her baby to her mother-in-law for an entire day...by the end of the day, she was using a bottle....and never turned back! Best of luck!!

I beleive your pediatrician would say to you this same thing. Just stop and she will drink something when she is ready. There was also a show on 60 minutes years ago that said you do not have to worry unless it becomes days.

you could also try a good tasting protein shake and see if she likes it. Spiruteen makes a brand that my kids love, or Jay Robb has some very good brands that are organic. go to www.jayrobb.com his products are the best!

Good luck.

Deb

My daughter just weened from the bottle. We had trouble, and my ped did suggest that when she was thirsty enough, she would drink. Well the first day, she did not drink the milk out of the sippy cup until about 3 or 4pm that afternoon. But once she did, she was fine, and we haven't used the bottle since! Also, I recommended to another mom to use Gerber Banana Cookies. They are very crumbly and really make my daughter thirsty. I wouldn't offer water, just the milk out of the sippy cup and it worked like a charm!!! The 1st couple days her milk drinking schedule might be off, but she WILL drink when she is thirsty enough. I just kept the sippy cup with the milk out at all times so she could grab it when she wanted it. BTW- my daughter can be extremely stubborn as well. Hope this helps!

Will she drink from a straw? Maybe try one of the straw-type sippy cups or just try different types of sippy cups, the NuBe cups have a rubber (nipple like) lid maybe she would be more open to that. My youngest prefered those for the longest time and she was a bottle refuser too. Also, Maybe try the drinkable yogurts you can thin them with a little whole milk or even soy milk too, instead of formula she may not like the smell or taste of formula. My dr. said yogurt is ok before 1 yr old, and with my 2nd child (now 7) I started whole milk around 11 - 11 1/2 months old. My kids were all only breast fed,
