I am looking for any information possible. my daughter had a stomach bug since last friday when she started dry heeving and throwing up all weekend. she couldn't hold down anything so we only offered her pedilite all weekend. On Sunday i started to noticed she wasn't peeing hardly at all maybe if i was lucky 2 diapers a day. I called peds and she said to offer her small amounts of juice every 1 and if she can keep that down add a lil more as she can handle. she hasn't thrown up at all and is still drinking fine.We took her to ER yesterday morning they checked for a UTI and said it was fine and kep offering her fluids as much as possible. the also did a dehyrdation test on her foot which came back at a 3. which was right in the middle, but the er doc said instead of Iv fluids take her home and offer it to her here. well so far since 2 pm yesterday i have only changed 1 single diaper and that was barley wet.I called peds again and she said if by 7 not wet diapers call her again.I know there is something going on here, but every feels just because she looks good and is happy the everything must be okay as well. well to me it's not babys just don't stop peeing. so far today she has had a 6oz bottle of milk at 7 am and 11 am she has had mac and cheese and 6 oz of her juice and still no wet diaper.I am so worried and am so ******* mad i am not getting no answers.

What can I do next?

I would take her back to the doctor and ask for her to be admitted to the hosptial. 2 wet diapers a day is not enough.

I would have her back at that ER and demand they hook her up to an IV...that is not something to mess around with my daughter had Rotavirus in June and was incredibly ill not saying thats what your little one has mine had bad diarrhea and vomiting but little ones dehydrate faster than you can say it...hubby and I spent 3 days in the hospital with our then almost 2 year old and it was so worth it she is fine now, if she isn't peeing and fluids aren't helping she needs an IV dear, good luck and let us all know what happens please!

Hi H.,

I would definitely make a point of telling that dr that you want an appointment. You are their client not visa versa. It's not their call if she should be seen or not. You are her mom and knows her better than they do. She definitely should be wetting her diaper more than she is. She sounds like she is getting dehydrated and needs iv fluids. My daughter got the flu when she was 6 months old and became dehydrated. It's scary to see them on the iv but it helped her tremendously.

I would try at least every hour or so to give her a little something to drink and see if she is thirsty. Even I get thirsty between breakfast and lunch, maybe try something to drink mid morning Good Luck!

H., I also am a pediatric nurse and I would without a doubt insist on going to the ER. She does NOT need a urologist, there is nothing wrong down there (probably), she just needs fluids. Once an hour is not sufficient, you should be making her take a teaspoon to a tablespoon every fifteen minutes at least. Increase it if she tolerates it. If you are not seeing urine, then she needs fluid, IV or oral, either way, if you are not comfortable, you should call your pediatrician and insist on being seen now. Best of luck.

If you are not happy with the peds then I would move above them and call a urologist. I work for a urologist and it is not good for the child to not be urinating. They have more experience with this and I would call them immediately!

Let me try to give you some of the answers. Your doctors and the er doctors are not ignoring the problem. They are aware that your daughter is on the borderline of dehydration. However, they want to give her little body the chance to rehydrate through her taking in the fluids orally. That is why they want you to continue to offer her fluids. I believe it is approximately 1-2 Tablespoons of fluid an hour that will actually keep them hydrated.

The alternative to her drinking the fluid is the IV. Now as a mom, I know this sounds like the "Do it now!" answer to the problem. But at 11 months old, she is not going to like having the IV in, it will end up leaving a bruise and she will most likely try to pull it out. It also entails you keeping her sitting still for hours while the fluids drip into her.

When my son needed fluids, we were at the hospital pretty much at the hospital all night with him trying to keep him calm and still while he got the fluids by IV. Doctors are hesitant to put the IV in and put you and your daughter through all of this if you can get her to take the fluids orally.

I'm not a doctor or nurse (although my sister is a nurse)but as a Mom who has been through this before I thought I would share my insight.

Your doctor is listening and monitoring your daughter's progress by having you call if she hasn't had any wet diapers by 7. If she does have a wet diaper but it is barely wet, you should also let them know this. They probably would be sending you to the hospital for IV fluids if she hasn't had one by then. They probably wouldn't give her fluids in the office regardless.

If she has had that much fluid she is probably doing alright as far as hydration. It just may be with the fevers and low hydration earlier that she needs to build the fluids up a little more. Try to be patient and know that they are trying to do their best for your daughter.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!

H.....please get that little girl to the ER or insist on being seen. She is already getting dehydrated. I was an ER nurse until going on maternity leave and if you called and asked me, I'd send you in.

I would follow your instincts. My daugther has had a lot of UTI problems and I can usually detect a problem before it shows up positive on the peds "tests". It sounds like dehydration...I would keep giving liquids as often as she will drink them and keep in touch with your ped. It might take a while for her body to get back to normal.

I agree that something is not right here. If you are worried camp out at the er or at your doc's office and tell them that they need to figure out what is wrong. I had a doc once tell me that moms have good instincts and if you don't think that they are doing enough to yell and raise cane until they start listening to you and working on making sure your child is going to be ok. Good luck I hope everything turns out well.

If you feel this strongly about it, don't back down. Insist on seeing your doctor and insist that something be done. This is your child and you are in control of her care. If it turns out to be nothing, then, great, they get paid and you get a healthy child. If you're worried that someone will think you're an over-protective parent, don't! So what? It's your job to be over-protective.

Trust your instincts and don't take no for an answer. Good luck!

She's dehydrated. IT takes a while for the body to replenish after an illness. Keep pushing fluids and I'll bet she's peeing again very soon. If you are still concerned - absolutely call your doctor again. We've been through this same scenario before --it took about 24 hrs for her to start wetting again. It seemed that she needed the fluids in her body, so there was less to pee out. When I was dehydrated after a bout with food poisoning, I took 3 bags of IV fluid and didn't pee until the next day - my cells needed it! I would push the fluids tho - have water or juice constantly available and try to get her to sip some at least once an hour.
Good Luck
