Hi Moms,

A friend of mine just had a planned c-section, one week before her due date and the baby boy is 11 lbs 5 ounces. She and her husband are both on the taller side but nothing crazy. She, her sister, and her husband were all almost 10 lbs babies so she knew her son would be big but I am a little concerned at how big. Can you really have a baby this big at not even 40 weeks without the mom having gestational diabetes or something else going on? I would never ask her since it is private and in medical hands, I was just wondering.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I know people have 10 lbs babies with no GD but this kid was almost 11 1/2 lbs and not even 40 weeks. He would have been closer to 12 lbs if they had waited possibly.

Mzkitty...he looks like the happiest baby...I think you are right!

Thanks for the input...glad to hear good things!

Yowza!
My nephew was born two years ago at 10 lbs 8 oz. She didn't have any issues with her pregnancy other than being miserable from carrying a ten pound baby!

My in-laws aren't big (she's 5'4"...probably 140 lbs. when she had my husband and his brother, he's 5'11", maybe 170?)...but my husband was 11 pounds at birth, my brother in law was 11 lb. 8 oz. I know they weren't early tho' :). I have a lot of polynesian friends and several of them have had huge babies as well...I'm just glad it's not me...I had a hard enough time pushing out my 8 1/2 pounder! :)

Big babies are AWESOME! Both of mine were super easy, slept 12 hours straight thru the night the first week they were home, NEVER sick, never fussy, etc.

My daughter was a week and a half early and was 10.12 lbs. My son was almost 2 weeks early and he was 11 lbs even. Both were scheduled c-sections.

I didn't have GD, but both my now ex-husband and I are big, so it was "assumed" we would have big babies, and we did! They are now 12 and 9. =)

My boss had a nearly 12 lb baby. She did have GD. Delivered naturally.
When she asks me to do something--I do it! LOL

I believe, otherwise, birthweight trends follow the maternal grandmother.

i wonder what the length of the baby was?

My husband was 10lb 2 oz and his mom didn't have Gestational Diabetes.

To answer your question - yes. You can have a big baby without Gestational Diabetes.

YES! when my nephew had his son he was 10.5lbs and they kept testing him for GD b/c the med professionals thought for sure with a kid this big must have GD. his mom was little but his dad (nephew) is very tall 6'2''. He never had gd and the mom never had diabetes during pregnancy.

When my grandma had my uncle ( naturally, no health problems of any kind) he was 12 lbs.

My aunt ( that uncles wife) had her son and he was born naturally and too fast for pain meds he came out at 14lbs. The only thing wrong with her was she needed stitches... then got her tubes tied! My aunt said that my cousin was the easiest one out of her 4 to deliver. My cousin was wearing 3month old cloths when he was a new born and has never slowed down since! He is 16 5'10 and guessing his weight I would say 185. He looks more like he is about atleast 18/19 instead of 16.

Btw... my aunt is only 5'5 and soaking wet, 130lbs. My uncle is 6'4 and about 220lbs.

She won't have to point her baby out in the nursery. :) There was a ten pounder in the nursery when I had our son and it was funny how gigantic the ten pounder looked as compared to all the other newborns.

My best friend had an 11 1/2 lb baby - a girl. Of the 3 babies she's delivered, this one was the biggest. She is now 11 years old and completely lean and normal in every way. BTW, my friend had this baby naturally with no drugs (not exactly her choice, but that's how it happened). She didn't have GD either. Just a fluke.

Yes. It's really just heredity. Some people just carry big babies.

I am the oldest, and lightest, of my mother's 5 children. The last one was just about 10lbs. She never developed gestational diabetes but it does run in our family.

Well, it's unlikely that it was "normal", but I suppose it's possible. I would also think the mom probably had gestational diabetes to have a baby that big. She may not have known she had it, even if she was tested. Sometimes people can be on the cusp and test "normal" when they really do have it. I was on steroids during the last few months of my pregnancy b/c I had a major rash situation, and my son was very large as well, not quite that big though, thank goodness! My doctor said it's possible it could partially be b/c of steroids, but they aren't really sure how much, if any it affects the size of the baby. So, maybe she had an issue like that??

My mom, uncle and aunt were born in the 1950's and were all around 10+lbs... and that's when women were still drinkin' and smokin' during pregnancy! So there's that.

Otherwise, yes, big babies happen in "healthy" pregnancies. (Kind of relived for this woman that she had a c-section.)

My sister had an 11lb baby. But wasn't early and she did not have GD. She and I are tall. We both had bigger babies. (Although mine were under 9.5lbs)

I love big babies. Both of mine were close to 9 lbs and they were the easiest babies. They slept all night, they weren't fussy, etc. I didn't have GD. I'm expecting my third, and I hope he's big too!
