10 Weeks and Bleeding

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and I was straining for a bowel movement and blood started dripping in the toilet. When I stopped pushing the bleeding stopped. I wiped and it's definitly not coming from my anus. I left a message with my doc. Has anyone else bled?

What can I do next?

This is called an anal fissure (pretty sure). I had one at the end of both pregnancies and can definitely be caused by straining (constipation) hard bowel movements, etc. First thing, drink lots of water and eat lots of fiber. You also need a stool softener. Fiber one cereal is really good for bowel movements, Colace, and Benefiber. Every time you strain you can rupture or tear the area again and it make take a few weeks to heal. Don't be too alarmed. If it doesn't stop bleeding you may need to have someone look at it, but if it does stop then you are probably fine. You may also want to have someone take a look at it as well just to make sure it is an anal fissure. Let me know if you have any questions.

I know how frightened you are. I, too began bleeding in my 10th wk of pregnancy through my 17th! I had placenta previa & was on bedrest for 7 wks. Get to your dr as soon as you can get in. You are in my thoughts.

Hi B.,

I agree with Liz that it probably is an anal fissure. How red was the blood? Bright red blood is coming from closest to it's "exit area." If it's darker it could be something going on in your colon or in the intestines. Most of those kinds of issues can happen when pregnant and will go away. Unless you have had digestive issues in the past, it's probably nothing to worry about but definitely mention it to your OB or midwife.

Are you stil bleading???

The only time I have bled when pregnant is when I was miscarrying. (Happened 4 times. At 12 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, and 11 weeks.) I would schedule an appointment right away and get an ultrasound to see what is happening.

Good luck.

I started bleeding a little bit pretty soon after I realized I was pregnant. I went to the doctor, they did an ultrasound, I found out I was having twins and went on with my pregnancy with no more problems. They couldnt give me any explanation for the bleeding, just a guess that I could have been carrying more than 2 babies and lost one, but they really have no idea. I would say, if you are straining to have a bowel movement, maybe you could try getting more fiber in your diet to help that out. Meat and dairy will really constipate you, so try having lots of veggies and grains. Good luck!
