We are new here so my 10 year old is getting ready to start a new school, his grandfather is dying of cancer, and his parents are going through a divorce. He's got a lot going on and has had some scary, violent outbursts. We need help. I was hoping to get some recommendations of counselors in the Alamo heights area. I see this as ongoing for a while so if possible would like to keep things close to home. Do NOT want to simply get a prescription. I want to try and work this out naturally. Thanks to all who can help by dropping some names...we are in crisis mode right now. I would ideally like to work with someone who would be willing to see us together so we can work on having a better relationship with clearer communication.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I've started to put in calls to the people recommended and just wanted to thank everyone who responded, your words of wisdom really made me feel better. Of was priceless to hear from those who had made it through to the light at the end of the dark tunnel. This community is so very thoughtful. Thanks again.

S.:

My heart goes out to you and your children. My 10 year old, although not enduring the same circumstances that you are, still needed some intervention and counseling this past year.

The counselor we use is Kelly Zetner at Stepping Forward Christian Counseling. Her phone number is ###-###-####. Her office is located on the northside, behind Alamo Cafe just north of 281 and Bitters. My son is very comfortable talking with her. She does not push meds as a solution, although there was a time when we considered it as an addition to his therapy (I brought it up) but we were able to work through without it.

You may also want to check with your church as many of them have counselors they work with that would be a support for your whole family. In the meantime, pray, pray, pray.

I'm sorry you are going through such a hard time. We have used Johnny Clay Johnson (a psychologist) for our son who has anxiety and ADHD. His phone # is ###-###-#### or ###-###-#### and his office is off Hildebrand near Trinity University. He has been good working with our son, yet at times I have felt like it's easier for him to say we are bad parents rather than help my son cope with his issues. Overall, we have been pleased with him. He seems to do well with boys. Hope that's helpful to you - you will be in my prayers!

Dear S.,
I only know of 1 psychologist in the Castle Hills area on N.W. Military. His name is Dr. Tony or Anthony Navarro(Tree of Life Counseling) and he is good with children. He is christian based and want to make sure you are comfortable with that. If you are not, there is a lady by the name of Nancy Ratliff ( I believe she has her PHD, so she would be Dr.Ratliff-oops I forgot) and she is also a counselor and is good as well. She is located in the 281 area. I am not sure what your insurance is, but whoever you call, ask if they take your insurance first. They will eventually ask you after you have answer all their questions, so you start with that question so you can save your energy. If that makes sense. They are both not far from Alamo hts. area. You will get a lot of recommendation, but see if any one agrees with who I recommended or if there is more agreement on other recommendations. I think you are doing the right thing and I know you and your children will be fine. Remember, storms always have to stop in order for the crops to grow. Be blessed and take care.
