Hello moms,
My son is 10 months old and I just found out he had a reddish spot in his diaper when he urinated in it. I was wondering if this is a sign to be alarmed or if this is normal. It has happened twice, but the first time, which was some time ago, was very light and just noticeable. However, this time is more clear. Thanks in advance for all your comments.

I have 4 kids, i never saw anything reddish in their diaper. I would absolutley call the doctor. They do not mind when you have questions like this. It really could be something as simple as a uti.

I would take him to the doctor and insist he is checked for a urinary tract infection. my son had one and they kept saying it was a virus and i ended up at children's hospital to find out he did have one which is uncommon in boys but it still does happen.

How much fluid is your little boy taking? Before you assume that he is bleeding, make sure he is well hydrated. One of the signs of dehydration in babies is that they have urine which can look like it has spots of brick dust (think of the color of red bricks) in it. That can look like blood. If he does not seem to be in pain or discomfort, I would greatly increase his fluid intake and see if that takes care of the problem first. If it does not, or if he seems to be uncomfortable, then consider the (unlikely) possibility that he may have a urinary tract infection. They are not as common in little boys but do happen on occasion. Hope this helps.

Call the doctor. My one friend had a proublem that her one son had blood in his diaper and it was caused from the baby food that he was eating. But go get him checked. Best of luck.

Call the doctor. It's probably nothing, but he has to be checked out.

Hi L.,

I would recommend calling your pediatrician - and bring the diaper with you if possible.

Good luck!

Hi L.,

I would call the pediatrician as well. But if you are nursing it could be your hormones coming out in your son. This had happened to me with my first. He had salmon colored spots in his diaper and it ended up just being from nursing and perfectly normmal. I would check with your baby's doctor to rule out anything else. Plus, if you are nursing a good lactation consultant or local nursing mothers group might also help.
Best of luck.

L.,

Call your doctor. Blood in the urine is very important. My 21 month old son just came back from the hospital. He was admitted in acute renal failure with permanent damage to his kidneys. He is facing a life of disability, dialysis, and a tranplant. UTI's in boys are very uncommon. Blood in the urine is as well. It could be a sign of a bigger problem. I wish I had had a sign but I did not have any clues as to what was going on until it was almost too late. Call now!

I would take him to the Doctor. He could be having urinary tract infections. Boys get them too. If it were my child, this is not something I would ignore. It could be nothing, but have the doctor tell you that after they have done some tests.

Please call your pediatrician. It may be nothing to worry about. However, any kind of symptom like this is something your pediatrician should be aware of. They will know (from your son's medical history and their education) if it is something he needs to be seen about right away, something that can wait or something you can just disregard.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your little guy.

I would definitely call your ped and ask. Blood in the urine can signify a UTI, although it's not common in boys. Another thought, simply because I had experience with it, is dehydration. When my son was born, he wasn't latching on, and not nursing well. After 2 days, my husband and I noticed a couple of red spots in his diaper. Being new parents we freaked and thought something was wrong with the circumcision. At our appt the next day, our ped said that the circ was fine, but our son was dehydrated and that the red spots were actually crystallized urine because it was so concentrated. Whether it's blood or urine or something else, it's definitely worth getting him checked. Good luck.
