The things he is playing with is common for this age group , and no matter how many actual "toys" they have and how much you spend they still want the remote , phone and DVD , so I just used to give my kids and old remote and an old cell to play with.

Yep, you need to get down on your knees and decide what needs to be placed out of reach or covered, with a child proof device..

FYI, our daughter walked at 6 months.. Yes really, you cannot tell a 6month old "hands behind your back" or "look with your eyes and not with your hands", so we childproofed to the max..

It did not last but about 6 months and by then she understood what was off limits.. We still kept most things childproofed, it made life easier..

we got a plastic guard to put on the dvr so our daughter couldnt push the buttons and stuff. Im sure it was originally made for dvd players if you're afraid the kiddo might hurt the electronics. we got ours at babies r us.

You could give him an old remote you don't use anymore and put the other ones where he can't reach. I love all Leap Frog toys for my kids. They are educational and fun. Also, we have had the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Home since my now 6 year old daughter was a baby, all three of my kids love it. It's my 9 month olds favorite thing to play with right now (My 6 yrs old and 4 yr old play with it now too). If you plan on having more kids, it's worth the money.

My daughter is the same way. She started walking--or should I say running--at 10 months. She gets into everything still at 2 1/2. I got her her own remote to play with and put the real one up. If you don;t want the tv on, unplug it--but don;t let him see you do it. She also got her own little toy phone so she would leave our cell phones alone. Anything that engages him should work but I will say that no matter how great the toy is, older brother and his stuff is ALWAYS going to be more interesting. My little one follows her 11 yr old older brother and sisters everywhere, and can really get on their nerves sometimes.

They make a lot of toys now that mimic or act as exact replicas of many common household items (phones, remote controls, keys, computers etc). Purchasing those types of toys might provide him a safe alternative that still makes him feel like a big boy like his brother.

Other toys that offer a place for him to be to play could work as well. They have a lot of Fisher Price and Baby Einstein walking/standing play workstations. Some offer things the child can push while they walk and others just let them stand and react to what they do. This might be a good distraction from all of the no no's in the house.

It sounds like some baby proofing of the house is in order as wlel if you have not done so already.

Good luck!

Just make sure everything is baby-proofed and safe.... he's at the age where they explore a TON and what he is doing is normal. Both my kids did that too.
And babies like to play with what we are using...
Maybe give him things, that you don't mind he plays with. ie: an old remote control, a no longer used cell phone, a tape recorder he can push buttons on, an old computer keyboard etc.

And yes, younger siblings LOVE to follow around their older sibling. Explain to your Eldest child, that he is only a baby... explain baby development to him... so that they older one can 'empathize' with the baby. That is what I do with my older child in relation to my younger child.

The book: "What To Expect The First Year" and 'What To Expect, The Toddler Years" are great.

Let your baby play with pots and pans.... wooden spoons, empty boxes, things like that.

all the best,
Susan

The remote issue I gave her an old remote no batteries in it and also an old cell phone that still works and has pictures that it shows in a slide show. good luck

The next step is climbing. You might want to child proof your home for a climber as well.
My mom found the boy (24 months old) she used to babysit on top of the refrigerator throwing hard candy and gum that my mom had stored there down to my sister who was 18 months at the time. He climbed into the high chair which was stored in the corner against a cabinet, and then onto the cabinet, onto the microwave and finally on top of the refrigerator (it was the short old style). I found my 13 month old sitting on the back of the couch or climbing on the kitchen table from a chair many a time. I tried to keep mine gated either in their room or in the living room.

I'm sure the other moms gave you lots of good ideas...

If you're worried about bug bites outside, try dabbing a little bit of vanilla extract on your little guy. Or what I did was get one of those spray bottles from Home Depot, dumped in a bottle of vanilla extract & filled with water. Spray this around the area he will be playing outside. NO MORE BUG BITES! It works great for repelling all sorts of bugs. This mixture is also safe for applying directly to baby if you are taking him out to a park, on a walk, etc. Worked wonders for me & my little ones (and I'm extremely tasty to bugs!).

The only thing that will settle my younger son sometimes is going outside since there are so many wonderful things to explore, so I completely understand. Soon it will nice enough to play outside a lot too =o)

He's probably seeing y'all "playing" with the TV, computer, etc, so that's what he's latched onto. We also give our kids our old cell phones and remotes that don't work - bonus for a cell phone, if you still have the charger for it. It will still light up and make sounds when it's turned on, but if it doesn't have a SIM card anymore, he can't call people w/ it.

We also bought CD zip cases for all of the kids' DVDs. This way, they can still play with the boxes, but the actual DVDs are safely put away. (This makes it easier for the mini travel DVD player on long trips, too!)

Also, if he's interested in the computer when he sees y'all on it, try lapsit games in a couple of months. These are games that basically allow young children to sit in mom or dad's lap and just beat on the keyboard, and see what happens. There are some available to purchase, but sesamestreet.com has a couple you can play for free.

And I've seen it but not tried it: you can get mosquito netting for your stroller. Then you can at least go on walks w/out him getting eaten alive by the bugs.

Check out food containers when you're finished w/ them - look for lids that are simple for little ones to take on and off. You can also give him something simple to put in, and dump out and put back in... try Cheerios or puffs or something you know is safe for him to put in his mouth - or poker chips work well, too. They're really too big to swallow. Or just give him a plastic bowl full of water and let him splash.

Melissa & Doug makes great wooden puzzles for little ones. The pieces are chunky, so you can stand them up, and he can play with the animal or car or dog figures or whatever puzzle you get, until he gets the hang of actually working the puzzle.
