I have a 10 month old that is sick. It started out with a cough. And today she now has a cough and a low grade fever 100.4 If this continues I would like to take her to the doctors. The problem we have is we have no insurance. We qualify for medi-cal with our income. However we were given a pretty good size gift of a deposit on a house. Right now it is sitting in our account and we cant move it until we put it down on a house(hopefully in the next month) I have explained this to medi-cal but they say as long as the money is in our acount we dont qualify. Are there any clinics of some sort that I can take my daughter to that will cost us a small amount or free.

What can I do next?

when my son was about the same age he got a bad cough that lasted from sept til jan. Iam totally serious! We took him to the doctor, they gave him prednasone, that he threw up, and inhalers that he was too young to inhale. Someone told me something that sounds weird but actually works. put Vicks vaporub on the bottom of the babys feet and put socks on to sleep in, she'll fall asleep fast and soundly and usually will sleep all night. In my experience they don't even consider 100.4 to be a high fever for a child, I know I don't agree either. Maybe try tylenol every 4 hrs for the fever, but if she can get a good nights sleep it really makes a difference. Good luck, been there, not fun

Depending on where you live, there are neighborhood clinics that do offer care for those that are uninsured. I recently heard of an office run by Kaiser, Sutter and the the county for the Oak Park area. I don't know what the qualifications are but check your county website to see what they offer. Super Walmart has a clinic as well as some Rite Aids and Med 7.

I think I remember reading or seeing an advertisement somewhere that some grocery stores (Walmart, CVS/Longs Drugs etc.) have small clinics run by Doctor/Nurse Practioners for basic care for a flat fee???Maybe try a Med7 or whatever they call themselves now and see if they look at infants. I am just not sure...sorry your baby is sick : (. There are low cost forms of insurance that are available where you could cover just the kids. We have Kaiser. Lastly, there is a program (if it hasn't been cut) that helps families with children which I believe is called Healthy Families.

K.,
Sorry for the delay - just catching up on emails. Your children may qualify for the Healthy Kids program. Many who don't qualify for Medi-Cal do qualify for their program. They can help you get signed up for Medi-Cal, the state Healthy Families program, for a special Kaiser program, or this Healthy Kids program. This is a health insurance program for Sacramento County residents and residents of several of the surrounding counties. You can call them at 1-888-531-KIDS (5437) - they are located here in Sacramento.

Good luck - J.

If you are in the Sacramento Area, there are Sutter Express Care Clinics that charge $65 for a visit without insurance. They are located inside some RiteAid stores.
