10 Mo Old Has Stridor Without Much of a Cough

Hi all,
My 10 mo old son has had stridor or loud breathing on and off (it's not consistent) for the last few days. It started on Monday night and we took him to see the ped that afternoon. He said what we described sounded like stridor and that his throat was a little bit red and inflamed. He said this is usually because of croup. My son didn't really have a cough then and still doesn't though he's had a clear, runny nose. He's coughed a handful of times in the last few days. THe ped said to wait a couple days and if it didn't get better to fill a prescription he gave us for a steroid. I'm just wondering why he would have the stridor symptoms without having really had croup or much of a cough since I thought the stridor came with or after having croup. He seems happy overall and slept really well last night though the couple of nights prior he had some restlessness and congestion. Have any of your experienced this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. It was an encouragement to know that others knew what I was talking about and had experienced it! So much is still so new for me as a rookie mom! Anyway, my son's cold passed and the stridor decreased every day so we didn't get the prescription filled. Then a couple of days ago he had stridor again but it was just now and then like before. So, I called the dr., we went in that afternoon. The dr said he sounded great and looked great inside and that having the stridor here and there with crying, sometimes feeding or laughing, etc, was okay and that persistant is what would be a red flag. He thought it might still linger here and there for a few more days and that our little guy was just fine. We've had a humidifier going in his room and overall he really seems all better. He's had no coughing fits or anything scary. So, hopefully it's all better and cleared up. Thanks again!

I have 2 daughters, and my oldest daughter has battled croup/strider on the tail end of just about every cold she's had. Yes, you can have strider-ish symptoms and croupy cough without much of the cough.

I'm really surprised he didn't go ahead and prescribe the steroid or at least give a breathing treatment (nebulizer).

Get a cool-mist humidifier for his bedroom.

Keep close tabs on his breathing, and if it gets too labored, take him to the hospital. (Getting him outside in the cool night air will also help.)

When you get to the hospital, what they'll likely do is give a steroid (Orapred?) and breathing treatment, then send you home with a script for the steriod.

For what it's worth - and good luck!

i don't know that coughing is necessarily always paired with stridor. if he has a bad attack of it where it seems hard to breathe, take him into the bathroom and turn on a HOT shower to fill the room with steam. or throw a sheet over yourself, him, and a humidifier, to create a steam tent. also cold air helps clear the airways, so going outside or standing in the freezer door helps too. also, if you have any vicks vapo rub or vapo steam the eucalyptus oil helps clear the airways and it works quickly. it can be serious if they can't breathe (um, for obvious reasons) so watch carefully. usually our bad croup attacks happen at night for some reason, so i sleep in my daughter's room for a night or two when she's croupy.

My daughter often gets croupy when she gets a cold, and these things have always helped her difficulty breathing. her attacks usually calm down after a few minutes, thankfully.

My son had strider. His was caused because he had severe GERD and he developed esophogitis. He also had a cold at the time. My son was about 3 months when he had it but he eventually out grew it.

You've described exactly what my 13-month old went through for three days last week. It's over and he still has a little runny nose but otherwise ok. Keep your doc posted though!

Hey T.,

We had a child with Stridor as a toddler, and for her it was a harmless condition where she made noise because of loose throat structure and it resolved all on its own. If doctor thinks that croup caused the Stridor, they might be treating the croup with steriods, but the Stridor, as far as I know, is s symptom, not an acute illness on its own.

Using steriods to treat upper resperatory infections may help him heal more quickly, and my guess is that they want to be sure that they don't let the stridor or the illenss that caused it, become too serious so that his airway could be affected. If he is getting better, and you think his airway is not becoming more involved, then you may not need to fill the perscription. If you have any doubt about filling it, call the nurse, she can guide you, and your doctors office would be happy to help you if you have any doubt at all about a breathing issue.

My son had stidor from the time he was born until about 10 months. He was otherwise a very healthly baby with no colds, etc. His was caused by developmental issues in his throat. He finally outgrew it without ever taking any medication.
