1 Yr. Old with Cough for Almost 1 Month

My son got sick with cold-like symptoms on Feb. 20. He finally started getting better about March 13, but he still has a cough. The cough keeps changing. When he was sick it was a productive cough day and night. Then it turned into a dry cough only at night. Then at the end of the illness it became a barking non-productive cough during the day and night. Then for a few days it went back to a productive cough both day and night. Then it became a dry cough at night only. Now the night cough is gone and he only coughs occasionally throughout the day, but it is a very wet cough (kind of like after going to the dentist if anyone knows what I mean). So, on Friday he will have been coughing for one month. Is that ok? We have been to the doctor twice - once for the original illness and then again when he had the barking cough. Should I take him to the doctor AGAIN, or is this just the way illnesses go with little ones? And, no, I don't think it is allerigies. He caught it from a boy at church then gave it to my daughter who gave it to my husband, so it is some contagious thing. (My daughter has recovered much quicker, but she is also older.)

What can I do next?

This sounds very much like what we went through with my son last year at 1 year old and again this winter (he'll be 2 next month). It was determined that it was asthma triggered by a simple cold (and we have NO history of asthma in our family). He doesn't have chronic asthma mind you, he's had one instance last year and one this year. He was put on nebulizer treatments which helped greatly. This winter it came on suddenly and strong so he had an oral steroid in addition to his breathing treatments. There is no way little ones should be coughing for that length of time. Sounds like he may be much like my little guy - otherwise fine but a cold may trigger him. We have a preventative treatment that we now do with him at the onset of a cold to prevent it going any further. I am very surprised that your Dr hasn't done more. Typically a barking cough is a sign of croup, which is what started this whole thing for my son at age 1. His cough sometimes sounds productive and others not so much, so it's hard to judge just by the sound of the cough sometimes. Just judging from my experience, I would do some reading online at aap.org, webmd, Dr Sears, etc (something reputable), and then I would approach the Dr again armed with some questions if it sounds like some of the signs/symptoms describe his cough. Best of luck to you - and just FYI... If it does turn out to be something like my son, it's really nothing to stress about (I practically made myself crazy reading and researching, etc only to find out that since his case isn't chronic, it's just a matter of prevention for him). And the treatments aren't a big deal either - they take about 5 minutes and he just sits with me and watches a cartoon. At first my ped office kept telling me it was a cold on top of another cold (like one ended and he got another). This didn't work for me because everyone else in the family had recovered, and in my opinion if this was a "new" cold, someone else in the house would have had it by now (I have a 4 year old too). I aksed for another Dr (there's 5 in the office) and they determined what I described above. He was better in a few days and I refuse to see that particular Dr anymore. If you're not comfortable, keep asking questions. Hope you find some answers...

babies and adults often cough for a while after they have a respiratory infection.. there is phlegm in his lungs/sinus that needs to be coughed up and out.

if he doesnt have fever or isnt acting sick.. he is probably fine and will recover in time.

Hi A., I would take him back to the doctor. It could be a sign of asthma. All 3 of mine have it and when they had a cold the asthmatic nagging cough continued until that got addressed. Good luck.

HI A.,
Both of my children have had this horrible cough for just as long if not longer, it has been a terrible winter for sickness. I have taken mine to the doctor a couple of times and am thinking of taking my daughter again today. She now has this fever virus thing that is going thru the school and has missed 2 days last week and going on 2 days this week. My doctor did say with my son that is was an asthma like infection. SHe put him on a couple different inhalers. He kind of goes back and forth with the cough like yours does. My daughter however, coughs so hard and so strong that you think she is going to cough up a lung. People look at us strangely when we are out in public. Anyway i can report back to you later today after we see the doctor to let you know what I find out if you are interested.

HI I also am a christian stay at home mom. I didnt think there were any of us left lol. I have three kids and all of them have that same cold it sounds like. My older two who are 2 and 4 are still coughing on and off and my youngest who is 8 weeks is still coughing alot. His is still very wet and they have had this going on about three weeks. I went to the doctor today for rechecks and he said the coughing was do to the infection breaking up and them trying to get it out of there chest and lungs. I hope this makes you feel better.

I have three boys, all healthly except one. When ever he gets sick he stays sick for awhile, much longer than normal even to get rid of common cold. Had to take for breathing treatments at least 4 times during the winter season. He was tested for allergies, he is allergic to basically everything outside!!! He tkes Claritin now and he hasnt even been sick this winter yet. It's amazing!!! Check with your docotr and go to a allergy specilist!!!
