Moms- do you have any tricks to getting a child to take a sippy cup? My daugheter is one and she will not drink her milk from a sippy cup- it has to be a in a bottle and I have to give it to her.
Some background for you- She WILL hold the sippy cup and drink some water from it at other times during the day because I have been giving it to her all the time to get her used to holding it. And months ago, she would hold it and drink from it- it is just like she has decided she CAN do it but she just is not going to do it right now.
I would appreciate any feedback on tricks that have worked for you. Thanks!

What can I do next?

J.,
My daughter was the same exact way....she would only take a sippy cup (and drink from it) if there was water in it-the minute she saw/taste it wasn't water, she refused and would only drink the milk from her bottle. What I did was take her water, and put an ounce of milk in it (essentially milky water) and every couple of days or so, I would up the ratio of milk to water, when in about 2 weeks (I believe) she was on 100% milk in her sippy cups-AND we have no problems switching back and forth from water to milk in her sippy cups-she takes them either way now.

Good luck~I understand the frustration, I was at my wits end until I tried at :-)

I would also try the Nuby brand ones. They are much like a bottle, my daughter used those first & also the straw kind worked best. If those don't work, I would just give it some time & keep trying, She's only one, so I don't think there's any big hurry. Good Luck!

Try putting water in the bottle now and milk in the cup only.

Skip it and go to a cup. Just fill it with just a little. My little one also liked a straw at this age. It was so funny to see her drinking with a straw when she was so little, but it worked.

A sports bottle with a sucky top may work too.

Congrats on your growing family!
Happy New Year!

She's just being stuborn. She likes the bottle and knows you'll give it to her if she puts up a fuss. Remember you're the boss and hold your ground. She may refuss milk for a few days but eventually she will come around. Give her cheese and yogurt.

I saw a few moms already recommend the Nuby sippy cups. But, I wanted to reiterate. They worked GREAT with my son, who wasn't great with the sippy cups at the same age. Best of luck!

Try the NUBY ones. The spout is big & squishy. My daughter did the same thing and that is what worked for us.

Hi Jaime,
I just wanted to let you know that I am in this EXACT same situation right now so I'm very glad you asked this question! My daughter turned 1 two weeks ago and will only drink her milk from a bottle, warmed up (like how we used to give her formula). When we try to give her milk in a sippy she hits the cup and shakes her head no. We've even tried warming it up for her and putting it in a cup with no success. If you find something that works please let me know and I will do the same :-)

My 17 month old would not take a sippy cup it seemed like forever. She now will take water and juice but refuses milk. I have tried various things and than my mother-in-law discovered that she will take it from a straw sippy cup so that is what I do now. Give it a try and see if it works! Good luck.

My son was the same. I found the munchkin brand has one with a straw and he took to that and now we have no problem with any.

Try different cups... my son hated Nuby! He ended up liking the playtex cups. We started with the starter playtex cups that have a softer (but still firm) spout and handles. He goes back to them when his teeth are buggin him. He didn't really get the concept of a straw until recently. Every child is different-trial and error is the way to go on this one. The suggestion to only put water in the bottle and milk in the cup can be helpful. Present both at the same time. When my son had the choice, he went with the cup because he wanted the milk. You probably will have to stand your ground with the bottle-she does appear to be showing her independence! We ended up ditching the bottle during a trip out of town (that's how we stopped breastfeeding too. The paci will probably go the same way!!). Keep trying different things...

my son was breastfed and would NOT take any milk at all, regardless of what it was in.
however, he would drink chocolate milk... so try that for a while... during the transition. our doc said it was more important to get the milk than whether or not it was chocolate.
however, milk is NOT the health benefit they think it is... if you wanted to go dairy free, there are other healthier options.
