You can't. But you can do a few things to try! Make sure you're swaddling your baby tightly. That way, they can't wake themselves up by flailing their arms accidentally. Babies that small need to eat frequently around the clock, so waking up every 2-3 hours should last just a few more weeks. If your baby is confused with night and day, make sure to allow lots of natural light in during the day, play music, don't tiptoe around. Start a bedtime routine asap. It might include bath, singing, book, rocking, etc. Try to do it the exact same way every night and soon, the baby will understand that this routine means sleep for the night. I highly recommend Dr. Weisbluth's "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child". It has a chapter on babies this young, but you'll really want to read for the near future. Cheer up- your baby will start sleeping longer soon!

It depends on if your breast feeding or not.they usually absorb breast milk better and faster becaseu its perfect for them becaue it comes from you. I know that the Docs totally put fear into parents about back to sleep but I am a physical therapist and Most of my PT friends did not do that. we positioned our children on the side with a side sleeper wedge or put them on their tummy on a blanket on the floor with nothing around them and your right there watching them while they nap during the day.( my son would only sleep on his stomach). The babys neck and trunk get stronger faster when on their tummy and the faster they have trunk control the faster they will be able to roll and turn themself when they need to. That is why docs say did you do your tummy time. We tell parents 10 seconds 10 times a day to start, Some kids just sleep better on their stomach. I also went to sleep for two hours between 7 -9 or 8 - 10 while my husband took care of the baby. He would wake me up then I would feed the baby and we would go back to bed. I also took exrtra B vitamins because I was sooo stress it helps to reduce chances of post partem depression. my son was born super fast and he had a dislocated collar bone that was missed I knew because of being a PT and he was so fussy but not gasy. and he could not turn his head equally( he did not want to nurse on one side well, that becasue it hurt to turn his head.) I had a D.O .work on him that specializes in babies to do super gentle manipulation on him. Then he slept great. Good Luck

I am on baby number 5. I bought a Nap Nanny and I breastfeed her a LOT during the evening and she is sleeping through the night. She is currently 11 weeks old but has been sleeping through the night since she was 5 weeks old. I saw your other question about keeping your baby awake while feeding. It's hard with newborns because they like to sleep a lot and breastfeeding relaxes them. Just try to feed him in a well lit area where there is some mild noise and not too quiet. Talk to him too while you feed him. Rub his cheek to stimulate sucking. Also, the pump is not a good indication of how much he's getting. Babies can suck much more milk than what a pump can produce. He is probably getting from 4 to 5 ounces out of one breast and is getting full. Breast milk is digested much faster than formula though so some babies eat more often, especially in the first month. You want to feed on one breast for as long as possible so that he gets the hind milk. It is richer in fat and will stick to his stomach longer and keep him full longer, especially at night. You don't have to feed off both breasts at every feeding. I only feed off one at each feeding and then switch to the other at the next. Make sure he is burping after each feeding because the pressure in his stomach can wake him up after a little while. I nurse really well, burp my baby, then let her nurse again for a minute or 2 then put her in her nap nanny and she is out for the night. The nap nanny keeps her at an incline so she sleeps great. Good luck.

That sounds pretty normal, and is actually a good thing according to many experts, because it dramatically reduces the risk of SIDS. Ways that you can get more sleep while your baby frequently wakes at night is to bring the baby to bed with you (as long as you follow a few common-sense precautions, like, don't sleep in a water-bed, on a couch, don't bed-share when you or your husband have been drinking or taking any medications or drugs, etc. -- things that might make you accidentally roll over or smother the baby). That way, you can have the baby snuggled up against you, with you curled up around him, making sure nobody or nothing is covering him, and then when he starts to wake up, you can just pull up your shirt and nurse him, rather than getting out of bed and fully waking up. This is normal for mammals -- newborns need their mother's milk, mother's warmth, and are more calmed and have fewer episodes of sleep apnea and a more regular heartbeat when they sleep with their mothers.

SWADDLE! We used a swaddle and a "bouncy" vibrating chair for the 1st 3.5 months and he slept like a champ! He would sleep all night swaddled up in the chair. Other people thought it was weird, but we didn't care bc our baby slept. He's 1 now and sleeps in a crib--so we didn't make any bad habits! good luck and 1 m.o's are not known to be great sleepers.

Your baby is a one month old. They need to eat ALL the time because they don't have enough fat (energy) stored up to make it any longer.
I know it's hard, but this time will fly by and soon you'll have a toddler.
Try to be patient and understand this little human has only been here for such a small amount of time.
Good luck :)

SWADDLE!!!!! If you don't know how, ask a more experienced mom or check the internet. After being wrapped in the womb, the outside world can be a little more free than a newborn likes.

Keep in mind that 2 hours at a time is not so unusual for a newborn. Frequent feedings may buy you a few more hours at night, though. Best wishes!!

when you get your bath water ready for baby, put the swaddle blanket in the dryer and get it nicely warm. when the bath is over put that lavender johnson lotion on and swaddle him/her up nice and tight. they should sleep atleast 4-5 hours given the baby has a full belly and clean diaper! if that doesnt work. maybe try a swing that moves front to back, babies love that.

Have you tried swaddling her?? My daughter at that age was always getting cold and waking up... after we swaddled her at bedtime she slept about 4 hours at a time throughout the night.
