This Halloween Try "Booing"

Can Halloween get any more fun for kids? The answer is a resounding YES, especially if your family decides to participate in the new Halloween trend, “Booing!” Have you heard about “Booing?” I was introduced to this fun new trend a few years ago, when my family found a treat filled bag on our front steps a week or so before Halloween. Included with the treat was a short poem explaining the gift’s appearance, along with an “I’ve Been Booed” sign to hang on our front door, so that we weren’t “booed” twice!

How To “Boo”

  • The basic idea is that you and your children choose two families to “Boo.”
  • You then need two treat bags, two copies of the “booing” poem and two front door signs.
  • After delivering your packages, the recipients will each “boo” two more families and they’ll each “boo” two and so on! Watching the “boo” spread across town is half of the fun!

A Halloween “Booing” Poem

I spent some time on-line looking for a great “booing” poem and ended up writing my own, along with a short set of instructions!

  • You can use my version, see A “Booing” Poem, or download the poem that is posted at Organized Christmas. This site also has a selection of downloadable “I’ve Been Booed” signs. (You have to scroll down on their page to see the poem and signs.)
  • Another option is to have your children create the signs for your treat bags!

The “Booing” Treat Bags

Now, for the most important aspect of “booing”- just what should you put into those treat bags?? Recognizing that all of the children will be swimming in candy in the near future, try to think outside of the (candy) box!

  • What about the ingredients needed to make caramel apples?
  • Or a fun Halloween DVD?
  • Apple cider donuts? Pumpkin bread? Or if you’re like me, a mix to make pumpkin bread?
  • Glow necklaces or flashlights for Halloween night?
  • Whatever you choose to put inside, pick a cute bag or basket to deliver your wares.

Will you try Halloween Booing this year? Or have you been “booing” for years? I’d love to know!

I love this idea! So much fun and a way to pass out all those fun Halloween recipes I like trying! thanks for the idea!

I love doing this!! About five years ago, someone I worked with started this at our school. It was wonderful. We would "Boo" other teachers and hang the "Boo" on our classroom door. It ending up involving EVERYONE. Students loved trying to play detective to see who "Booed" who, and by Halloween, every staff member in the building had been "Booed". We started on Oct. 1 just to make sure we had to time to include everyone...

I can't wait to Boo my friends! Really great idea! What a great thing to share with the kids!

We've been in our neighborhood for 4 years, where we learned about booing and have been participating every year. The kids love it. I delivered a boo bag last night and came home to find we'd been boo'ed!

I have never heard of this but being the mom of a soon to be 2 year old this is a neat tradition we can start. Then we can do it again at Christmas. Since we live in a small apartment complex I will pick two neighbors here then two outside as well. I can not wiat to see how well it turns out.

We've been doing "Booing" for years. In fact, I started it in my neighborhood when my kids were small (they're now 20 & 25) and my neighbors with children still do it. Our bags had stuff for the parents, too, like Halloween dish towels or pot holders, a decorative Halloween candle, pumpkin potpourri, Halloween window stickers, etc. You could also substitute Halloween pencils or erasers for the kids instead of candy.

Hello from Daily Grommet!
We call this "Ghosting" in our neck of the woods and our kids "die" for it. We love the ideas you have for the bags, esp. the glow sticks and DVD. Homebaked goods totally shake it and the mix works for us too! Just wanted to also share with you another spooky cool Halloween idea that we heard about at Daily Grommet...

This is a fun idea (and we have participated, too)...but I have heard bad stories. Let your recipients know who the "boo" is from...just to keep them safe. As with every good idea, there are people who want to ruin it and leave nasty/dangerous "boos" for people. I won't get into details, but don't assume a "boo" left on your porch is from someone you know. You don't let your kids trick-or-treat at strange houses...don't let them eat from a "boo" bag if you don't know where it came from...

How fun ,this is a great idea !It's like the anticipation of the Great Pumpkin coming on the Charlie Brown Halloween show .Only the kids have a better chance of being booed by another family on your block than seeing the Great Pumpkin. This sounds like a wonderful tradition to start.

This sounds like a fun way to get to know some neighboors, I think I will try it!
