In honor of National Laugh at Work Week, traditionally held the first week of April each year, we asked members of the community to share their most memorable first day on the job.

Stephanie G. from Los Alamitos
My first day as an art director intern at an ad agency, my boss made me take all of his awards off the wall, and take the frames apart and clean the inside of the glass. Guess he really wanted to make sure I noticed how awesome he was. (Jerk!)

Rebecca B. from Decorah
It was New Years Eve, and the first time I worked for this restaurant (I knew the owner). While a small place, it was booked solid from 7pm-11pm that night. We were so busy and everyone was running around. While I was making battered shrimp and heating the prime rib, all the sudden out of the blue I got sick to my stomach.

After 10 minutes outside throwing up, the owner came up and handed me $30 and said go home. I felt so bad because we had about 20 orders hanging there, and now everyone had to work harder with me out…plus someone had to clean up my “mess”.
That was also my last day…

Cathy P. from Los Angeles
When I was younger, and working as a temp, I accidentally answered the phone with the name of the company’s competitor. Of course you have to know the owner of the company was on the other end of the line! I am ashamed to think of it, even after all these years…

My first day as a nanny, I was watching a little girl who was 12 months. She cried from the time I got there (at 7am) until her mother got home at 5pm. NOTHING I did worked. I sang, I read stories, I put her in the bath, I rocked her, I fed her, I danced, I took her outside. OMG, it was awful. I was a wreck and so was she. The second day she only cried for for 7 hours. :)

I stayed with that family for 3 years. It all worked out in the end.

Melissa J. from Milwaukee
In high school I thought I was interviewing for a job in a jelly/jam store. When I got to work, I found I had gotten a job at the jelly factory. They put me on the line flipping over jars that were just sterilized, and were about 200 degrees each. I was getting blisters on my fingers from the burning hot jars after an hour. It was horrid. I snuck out the back door at our first break and never went back.

Nicole P. from Santa Rosa
I went to work as a computer tech at a sports company. While I was compiling the database, which was full of sports acronyms, I asked my boss, “MLB… that’s Major League Basketball, right?” He just laughed, then shared it with everyone else in the office, much to my embarrassment. I sure enforced the blonde stereotype that day.

Casey C. from Conroe
Got rear ended on the way to the first day at a job and had to call and say I was gonna be late!!! I did keep the job for 23 years, LOL
