Milestones: Child Development on a Child's Own Terms

I was scrolling through Mamapedia Voices today and came across a posting about sitting. The mom was concerned that her child was 6 1/2 months but wasn’t sitting yet. I can relate to her concern and wanted to write about milestones and comparing your child with others.

My eldest did it the first time and never did it again. Seriously. She hated being on her tummy. I was a bit concerned about this but then she started sitting at 5 months and I thought, if she can sit the rolling over thing musn’t be too important. And then she sat and sat and sat and did nothing else. She was perfectly content sitting and playing and was not interested in moving. I took her to Gymboree classes and tried to get her interested in crawling but she would not go on her tummy. For about 4 months, she did not have any gross motor developments.

Around 10 months she started to “walk” holding our hands and that was it. This was all she wanted to do which killed our backs. She finally walked on her own around 13months and never looked back. The first time she crawled was around 20 months (way behind according to milestones). She is now 2 1/2 and has totally caught up to her peers and I have realized that milestones are a general map for parents but should not be looked at too closely.

My youngest daughter has been rolling non-stop since 4 months and at 7 months just became steady while sitting. She is not interested in sitting. She much prefers rolling around on the floor. I look forward to seeing what route she will take in her development and now know not to worry if she takes the road less traveled.

I believe that milestones are a general map for parents and should have a buffer in there for an individual child. I am a Mom of 4 and with my 4th I certainly compared and was very concerned about his lack of development in comparison to my other kids. Because of my persistence and experience as a Mom I was able to get an early diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy to my 6 month old baby. The Doctors all said he was fine and they develop at their own pace....I obviously disagreed...

I am glad to see i am not the only one. My son is almost 10 months and does not crawl. Like you were saying about your daughter, he loves to sit and walk around with us holding his arms. Everyone asks all the time if he is crawling yet. I am starting to think he will walk before he crawls. He was crawling backwards for awhile but now he will just back up to make himself sit. It makes me feel better knowing that someone else has gone through this too...

Lindsay is partially right...milestones are a general guideline and vary a lot among kids, so it's important not to compare too much. However, when a child delays a milestone by a lot or skips it completely, I become concerned and it should be a red warning flag to a parent that something MIGHT be going on. At times, if one milestone is skipped completely, it can cause others to be delayed or skipped...

Good points. This also applies to reading readiness and some good info at the following blog on that topic:

My middle daughter started crawling at 4.5 months...up the stairs! Repeatedly! All she did was move while awake, then take tremendous naps. She NEVER sat voluntarily until age 18 months. Several guests were visiting when it happened. We walked into the kitchen, and there she was, sitting on the floor, staring at a magazine which she'd opened to a woman in a ball gown. Thus began her obsession with dresses and style. She's a hoot!

Lindsay, awesome article! I'm so glad you wrote it. It's sad sometimes to read about how desperately moms worry about their little ones not achieving stages and milestones. There is so much fear out there, and I'm glad to see you are the loving voice of reason.

Peace,
Syl

My third daughter didn't sit until eight months. Otherwise, she has been pretty normal on motor development. She seemed a little weaker then pears while climbing around age 2, but at 5 she is about the same. The doctors said she was fine developmentally at her appointments. She couldn't write her name at age 4 & then suddenly right before age 5 started writing it...

Just want to say that Tara's comments are spot on. Development is a fluid process. The important thing is to give your children opportunities to play and learn. Each skill tends to build on what a baby has already mastered and at the same time, prepares them for what comes next. Crawling on hands and knees looks like it's mainly a gross motor skill, but all that work also strengthens the muscles around the shoulders and prepares the infant for success with fine motor tasks...

If anyone is interested there have been some very interesting studies done by a pediatrician in Hungary named Emmi Pikler. For over fifty years now the Pikler Institute has been studying gross motor development. In particular they have studied unassisted gross motor development. This means that infants are never placed in a position they did not get into themselves...
