What Is a Reasonable Monthly Food Budget?

I am completely obsessed with lowering my grocery bill and wonder how others are doing it. We had a surprise expenditure in March that shocked me into reality about how much I am blowing on convenience food (takeout from Panera and other places) and not having a plan before going to the grocery store. I was totally shocked when I added up our food expenditures for March. I included grocery store purchases, takeout meals, a few meals out, and my husband's lunches out during his workday and the figure was nearly $2,000 for my husband and...

Advice for 6 Year Old with Irrational Fears

My 6 year old son recently started thinking about death. After he goes to bed, he will get up and come into our room crying because "he is afraid of dying, and he doesn't want us (mom and dad) to die either." I have asked him what makes him think about it - something that he learned about in school, saw on TV, read in a book, etc., and he says he didn't hear about it anywhere. This has happened several times in the last two weeks. At the same time, he has also become increasingly afraid of storms - completely freaking out if it's at all...

What Pet Should We Get?

My husband and I are discussing getting a family pet. He wants an indoor cat or a small dog. I would prefer a sometimes indoor mostly outdoor dog because my son loves to be outdoors. We have a sixteen month old little boy who can be quite rough while playing so I'm thinking a bigger dog would be better so he doesn't accidentally hurt it. I am home all day so it will get plenty of attention. I went to a shelter today and found the cutest 1 year old beagle who has been declawed. Can anyone tell me any reason why we should not get the beagle...

Tired of Extended Family Birthday Parties...am I Wrong?

Ok, here is another in-law question for all you mommies out there. My husband's extended family gets together about once every two months to celebrate birthdays. This includes aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. We are expected to bring gifts, and there are usually 3-4 birthdays each time. For one, we cannot afford this and especially since my son has been born, our finances are even tighter now. Also, we are sent a very specific menu, and we are to sign up for what we want to bring. Sometimes my MIL even emails the recipe she wants us...

Family Vacation Ideas

We have never taken a family vacation. We would like to this year. Our kids are Boy 10, Girl 6 and Boy 2. What are your favorite spots? We aer open to flying or driving. We are centrally located (KS) so any tips you could provide, things that did or didn't work for you. If we fly, what did you do about a car seat for the rental when you got there? Thanks!

Almost 6-Year-old Wants a Nintendo DS or a Wii

My almost 6-year-old has been pleading for a Nintendo DS or the Wii, like all his cousins and some of his friends have. My mother-in-law really wants to get him one for his upcoming birthday, but my husband and I are not sure we want him to have one. We're concerned that even if we restrict his usage of it, it will be addictive and he will be less interested in his usual activities --- reading, art, t-ball, scooter riding, music, imaginative play, etc. He's the usual energetic kind of boy but we love that he has a creative and...
