Mental Health Question About Daughter

Last week my daughter spent a week in a mental health facility for choking her brother, fits of rage, and hearing and seeing things that aren't really there. She was diagnosed with mood disorder, bipolar, and psychosis. They put her on risperidone and requested she see a psychologist and psychiatrist weekly. Now to my questions: 1. She has missed a large amount of school and even though they are all excused they are still concerned about the percentage of time she has been there and we have gotten a letter saying she is being charged...

When to See a Therapist

Hi Everyone, I have been struggling with my 4 year old and my 2 year old lately. But I am starting to feel guilt over the way I have handled certain situations, and am beginning to have extreme anxiety over me thinking I am "ruining" our beautiful son ( the 4 yr old ). Would it be rational to see a therapist and work through the issues I am feeling, and - are they also able to offer advice on how to handle home situations? I just don't like the way things have been at home lately, and I feel like no amount of parenting that I try to do...

Attitude and Self-injury

I have a 12-year-old boy whose academic performance has slowly deteriorated throughout this academic year and whose personal integrity has surfaced to insecurity. He is quite unorganized. He has a school agenda that is full of doodles rather than homework assignments. My son is not an excellent student, although I am told he could be if only he had the "right attitude", but up to now he has been passing with reasonable marks. However, this past term he has failed 4 classes. This past week at school his counselor informed me he put paint in...

What to Do About Depression???

Hi, My husband has always been moody. I just took it to be in his nature. Now that we have kids, however, he gets into these "moods" much more often, sometimes twice a week, if they only last a day or so. Sometimes they last a whole week and more! And I HATE it! I don't know what to do. He is not abusive, though sometimes can be mean. He tends to just be quiet and not say anything. I have to take care of the kids myself, as he does not want to be involved when he's in a mood. It's to the point where my soon to be three-year-old...

Dyslexia & Dysgraphia

My soon to be 8 year old (March 20) daughter has always written things backwards. She used to write her name in mirror image all of the time. So not only were the letters backwards they were written from right to left. In kindergarten I asked her teacher about it, and the teacher said it was still quite common at that age. In first grade I asked the teacher about it, and she said that since my daughter was not failing that the school would do no testing on her. Finally, I found out I could pay for testing through the Child Studies...

Follow up on Prior question...son's GF Attempted Suicide

I'm just stunned. So I asked yesterday about how to handle that my son (16) partied with his GF (17) and another couple she's friends with over the weekend instead of sleeping over a friend's house like he said he was. I figured it out yesterday morning, confronted him after school, he fessed up and handed over his phone and iPad and is grounded. I called her mom last night (who I don't know well at all) to tell her about what happened, advised her to check her phone for risque pictures and asked her to call me back at some point and let...
