Guinea Pig or Hamster?

Ever since my 6 year old daughter visited my sister and fell in love with her chihuahua, she has longed for a dog she can have on her lap and carry around. She begs for one almost daily. We already have a dog (an older, grumpy border collie who's definitely not a cuddler), and often have my mom's dog over here due to her health problems. Hubby has refused to consent to another dog. So the compromise is either a guinea pig or hamster. Which is more tame/affectionate/cuddly, and is one "easier" than the other? I'm fully aware that I'll be...

Telling the Kids About Having to Have Our Dog Put to Sleep

Our wonderful dog whom my husband and I got together 12 years ago has been diagnosed with stomach tumors that are inoperable. We have no choice but to have her put to sleep. It is hard enough on my husband and I but we don't have any idea how to tell our girls - ages 2 and 5 years old. They know that Kita has been sick and they are sad about that. I just don't know how to tell them that they won't ever see her again.

Dog and Baby

I have a crawling one year old and a big dog in an apartment. We do have a tiny "yard" which is mainly a deck shared by my neighbor. My dog usually sleeps in a dog bed in the living room, although I have another dog bed in my bedroom. Now that my daughter is more aware of the dog, she is constantly going to the dog and "bothering" her (the dog is female). My dog is great with her but constantly licking the baby. It's ok for awhile but becomes quite annoying after some time. With constant curiosity in my daughter to pet the dog every 3...

Seeking Suggestions on Housebreaking Beagle Puppy

I just got a baby girl beagle;she is a little over two months old. This is my first dog and I really don't know how to housebreak the dog. I live in an apartment on the 4th floor so I am not sure how to teach her to do "her business" only in the designated area. EX: on the training pads or in the litter box. It is just hard to bring her up and down all the time and it seems that at this stage she might have an accident on the way outside. Any suggestions on how to housebreak and discipline the pup would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Toddler and Dog

I need some suggestions. My toddler gets very exctied around our ten year old dog and is very rough with him. Thank goodness our dog has the patience of a saint. Every time I catch him playing or petting him rough, I give him one verbal warning. If he continues, I put him in time out for one minute, then after time is up, bring him back to the dog and show him how to pet the dog nice. This is not working fast enough. I'm afraid he is really going to hurt the dog - today he poked him in the eye so hard he cried. I need help!! Any other...

Weekend Getaway That's Baby-friendly and Dog-friendly?

My husband and I were huge travelers before our daughter came along, and we don't want to completely sacrifice this love of ours! We're a bit nervous about it, but we want to take our first trip with our infant daughter in late December or early January. We'd like to bring our well-behaved dog along as well. Does anyone have any lodging recommendations that are both baby-friendly and dog-friendly? We prefer heading north (wine country, Mendocino) or south (Carmel, Big Sur or maybe even as far as Santa Barbara). Driving time under 4...

New Vet Needed!

I just can't go to the Falls Road Animal Hospital anymore. they are so incredibly expensive, and I was there for TWO AND A HALF HOURS to get a heartworm test and a check for worms [for the new dog]. And yes, I had an appointment. While I know they have great care and they will always be my go-to for emergencies, I need another city vet with reasonable prices and a reasonable wait time, and less sense of entitlement. Any suggestions? I have a year-old puppy and a very naughty cat, and with the baby on the way money is going to be very...
