We make a thanks tree from a few branches. Each day in November the kids write one thing they are thankful for on a slip of paper that we hang from the branches.

My mom always made the pumpkin pies the night before and we'd all have a slice for breakfast on Thanksgiving morning!

We go around and express an appreciation/words of thanks to those gathered around the table.

Cheryl R commented on November 5, 2009 - We did the same thing except for things as well as people we were thankful for. Since getting married and having kids we always make the turkey. At 5am hubby is up with the kids digging the guts out of the turkey. It is something they look forward to.

Once the kids left home, I could focus on exactly what I wanted Thanksgiving to be. I skip the turkey, etc., eat something fun (different every year), and write a few thank-you notes to people who have enriched my life. I send them by mail.

A roaring fire in the fireplace and all my kids here. We eat dinner then fix two plates and drive around to find someone who looks like they didn't have a Thanksgiving dinner or just leave the plates at the bus stop. Then marathon monopoly game!

We sometimes give a Christmas ornament to each guest. Then they have time to enjoy it during the Christmas season.

Mel C commented on November 5, 2009 - We do this at Christmas time. Every year I make two Christmas ornaments (one for our tree and one for my daughter's tree when she grows up) & we buy a special Christmas ornament for her every year that she can enjoy all her life.

Two days before Turkey Day I make the pecan and pumpkin pies. The next day I make the sides. Then on T.D. we watch football & Macy's Day Parade. The day after T.D. we put up the Christmas tree and bake the first batch of Christmas cookies&listen2music.

My favorite family tradition is watching the Macy's parade as a family. As children we would set up "tent" to sit in to watch. Now my child does the same. :)

Our best newest tradition is to invite soliders who are stationed here at Lackland AFB to join us since they are away from their familes. The Air Force will assign 2 soldiers and they truly make the day. Our way of saying thanks.

Since my three children live in different states. And I live in a different state from them; we celebrate my birthday, have a family reunion, and I cook the first Gumbo of the season. We thank God for all that we have, incuding each other.

We practice "Pie Wednesday" --- mom takes Wednesday off from work to bake all the pies in advance. We also prep the "sides" that can be reheated the next day. That way, we have time to watch the parade while enjoying coffee and pumpkin muffins.

We start putting the Christmas tree up. Everyone gets to add their own flare, and it's fun. How else can we work off those calories to get ready for more?

My husband always bakes or smokes a small ham to go with the turkey and I make pumpkin pies from scratch from the halloween pumpkins which are cooked and riced. My two sons will not eat a store or bakery bought pumpkin pie.

My husband's family has a family reunion on Thanksgiving Day. This is his mom's side of the family. All the women bring a dish. There is a lot of food and a lot of people. Our son had fun last year - he was 1-year-old.
