Well, you'll definitely need a set of breasts! A bouncy seat so you can occasionally set down the baby (y'know, so you can pee), a nasal aspirator, a good thermometer, and a LOT of patience.

Nursing pillow (if you are nursing) - beats stacking up regular pillows. A good baby monitor. Bouncy seat and (later) exersaucer (although I didn't believe the exersaucer at first).

Lots of spit cloths. Try gear at a friends house before buying (see what your baby likes), then buy on CraigsList (babies are gentle on their gear). Go to a place to try lots of carriers to find what works for you and your baby.Invest in a good diaper bag

1stTimeMommy commented on October 22, 2009 - Face Cloths are a must - they can double as spit cloths and runny nosies and anything in between!! Buy bulk at Costco! they have fun colors too so you can match your decor. Target has embroided ones if you want to add to a theme.

1stTimeMommy commented on October 22, 2009 - Forgot to mention bulk buying facecloths are MUCH cheaper than the fancy burp cloths you buy now-a-days, plus they are plentiful, so you never have to search for a burp cloth if they are in the wash!

A good place to nurse the baby, baby swing, and enough onesies and diapers to make a load of each in the washer along with a lot of patience and a dash of nap when your baby naps.

Well, there's not really any gear you NEED. Neccesities would be boobs and diapers. However, my favorite gear would probably be the boppy.

1stTimeMommy commented on October 22, 2009 - A thermometer and aspirator (suction device) is usually given to you at the hospital, unless you want a thermometer that tells you temp. in a matter of seconds, the hospital brand will do fine. Some hospitals will also give you a diaper bag with goodies!

whatever you get...check out the baby and thrift stores first!! you will save tons! get online and check out free diapers, how to save money on diapers. I got 100'sof $ of free formula and diapers with sale/coupons. Breast feeding is free and is best!

The Number 1 item is a light switch dimmer... in your baby's room and the room where you'll feed your baby at night. Lots and lots of burp cloths. The Bebe sounds nasal aspirator (Walmart), Braun ear thermometer, a humidifier, Highlands teething tablets.

multi-tasking laundry detergent--can be used for baby and eveyone else...who has time to do separate loads of laundry??? also a big bathing sponge (Target) goes in the kitchen/bath sink so you can bathe tiny baby. easier than separate tub

aw commented on November 5, 2009 - YES. All Free-Clear was as good as Dreft for us, and cheaper, and everyone's laundry went together. We did have to give up dryer sheets because the baby was allergic but that was a small price to pay across so much laundry.

Absolute musts for me were: Mylecon gas drops, corn starch for diaper rash, aquaphor for everything!, bouncy seat, burp cloths, jump-a-roo! Oh, and I think the other comment about a washer and dryer is spot on... no pun intended! :)

Temporal thermometer (better than ear or rectal for ear infection and safety reasons), Boppy, Travel Stroller, Mylicon (total MUST!), gentian violet for thrush, mechanical swing, rear seat mirror, nasal aspirator, teethers and...infant Tylenol or Motrin!

The Ultimate Crib Sheet. This snaps to the crib rails and goes over the regular sheet and is waterproof. If baby wets in the night, unsnap sheet in 3 seconds and lay baby on sheet underneath!

A bumbo chair has been really nice, a jumper, and a camera! Most things are extras and can be nice but your house gets very cluttered with things you use only for a little while

If you're nursing and cosleeping, you don't need much! A boppy pillow, a pacifier, a sling (New Native is my fave), a swaddler, baby gowns (no need for outfits for the first 3 months!), car seat, and TummyTub for those fussy evenings. That should be it!

Boobs, diapers, clothes. Everything else is just extra... but a lot of it is helpful! I love my ergo baby carrier, a nasal aspirator is really cool but we can suck better than they can, and baby wash is nice when they need a bath.

Absolute must haves were a sling or carrier, cloth diapers so I didn't have to keep buying disposibles. And a thermometer. And for the first few months with my daughter I needed a breast pump as she was premature and not gaining well but I didn't nee.
