For the hesitant reader, don't underestimate the power of flashcards. My son really needed the confidence building he got from knowing each word. Until he had a sufficient vocab, books were intimidating.

Read to your child when you are both enjoying it. Otherwise wait until they are cognitively ready! We do a lot of damage by forcing children to read too early. Check out work by Dr. Raymond Moore and Dr. David Elkind.

When my child was a baby I would use site words and teach him the words through motions. I also used phonics. Now he's 4 and he's reading books without any help. His preschool teachers were amazed by this, but to me he just loved to read.

Read often, read signs, recipes, directions, ingredients, jokes, stories, etc. Visit the library. Write down your child's stories and practice reading them together. Value reading. Play with words, rhymes, word families, word games, etc. Have fun.

A phonics approach works for many kids for not so for others. Helping kids learn what words look like, sound like and mean can be fun, hands-on-learning and more meaningful to many kiddos (even for those who do learn with phonics!)

Without a doubt, the BEST program hands down is a simple book that takes literally 15 minutes a day. In 4 months my daughter was reading at a 2nd grade reading level. Less than $20 and it's amazing! Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

I suggest having your children tell you their own stories; write these stories down using their own words. Then you can read the stories together and they can read them back to you, too, on their own.

For children around 4 years old or under, flash cards of words are very effective. Make the letters big and write the words in black. For children over 4 you can start with teaching phonetics. All materials can be bought or made at home on a shoestring
