when my 1st newborn child's baby angel breathing monitor alarm went off in the middle of the night. Ran in to find his limp bodynot breathing. The jolt of me picking him up to begin CPR startled him awake and got his breathing back on track.

My 11 year old daughter's school left a message that she was absent & asking why! I last saw her 2 hours before, riding her bike off to school. Grabbing keys to go look for her, I frantically called the school. The teacher marked the wrong child absent!

- That happened on my son's 2nd day of kindergarden. They called to tell me he wasnt in school but I told them I myself had dropped him off at the door 1 hour earlier. He ended up being in the wrong classroom. It not only scared me but the school staff too

My 13 month old aspirated a piece of food and stopped breathing. She went limp and completely blue in my arms. My husband immediately called 911 but luckily I had CPR training years before with my preemie son and remembered enough to save her.

My 3 year old son slipped away from me into a stream of adults at a crowded Pirate Festival. "Help! We've lost a small blonde kid in a pirate costume!" We now take photos of the kids when we arrive at an event and tattoo them with our cell #s.

- We have id necklaces (pet ones) that are engraved with our cell phone numbers. It's never been needed but it's easier than running around showing pictures to strangers.

On vacation, we stopped on a bridge to look down at a canal. My 6 mo old was in the stroller behind us, parked and locked. 1 min later a man was yelling at us-the stroller rolled off the curb and flipped backwards into the street, but the cars missed her.

my son had to spend his first night in the nursery to have his glucose levels monitored, but was brought to me for his feedings. they were 30 minutes late for feeding #3, i sent hubby to bring him to me, he returned in tears w/ a sad looking nurse.

My 6 year old son was attending an after school activity & *they* didn't know where he was or when they last saw him. Another kid reported he walked home & when he wasn't there, I freaked. I had to make a missing person's report on my own child. Awful!
When my daughter was 11 mo., she was bitten by a Southern Pacific Rattle Snake, while in her walker in our backyard. We took her to the hospital and they started Anti-venon, and gave her 19 viles of it. They had to restart her heart 4 times that night.

- They prepared her for surgery the next day, just in case of amputation, because the leg looked like a 5 year olds' on an 11 mo. old. They got it to stop swelling up by the hip. They made 7 incisions on the leg to remove all the fluids in it. Now she's 13.

While at work, i received a panicked call from my hubby saying 'just woke up. sliding door open, gate open, 3 dogs and Landon (our 2 year old)missing!" we live on a 40 mph street. Landon was 3 doors down, out front, going potty in the neighbors yard.

- update-the utility company left the gate open. i can barely open it, much less a toddler. we didnt know he could open the slding door - the gate is padlocked and the door has a lock up high. utility company has to ring doorbell to get back to check meter.

My daughter and I were taking a nap when I awoke to some men in my room.I pretended to be asleep all the while thinking they had taken her because she hadn't cried. When I was sure they were gone I ran to her crib, shaking, and found her fast asleep.

The 1st & 2nd times that I performed CPR on my son, and I didn't think my actions were having any effect... he would stop breathing, go stiff & blue, and then limp & white. The 15th time, I knew that he wasn't going to come back to me. 12/22/09 he passed

The phonecall from school. "Hudson fell and hit his head" "Do I need to come get him?" "No, the paramedics said they don't have time to wait". WOW! My son needed 65 stitches to close the gash in his head. Literally fileted his head open to the skull.

Scariest moment was during my pregnancy. We live in the country. At 9mos working in the yard I looked up & saw a loose pit bull coming up our long dirt drive. I grabbed shovel & backed away to the safety of the house, but was flooded with visions of Cujo!

- Were you scared simply because it was a pit bull? I'm not saying that you didn't have the right to be afraid of a stray dog because obviously any stray dog is dangerous and should never be messed with. However, pit bulls are generally great dogs...

My twins were diagnosed with twin to twin transfusion syndrome (fetalhope.org) @ 17wks. We're given the option to terminate 1 to save the other or try (10% chance) for both. No guarantee, but no way I couldn't continue down this 16wk path through it.

- When my youngest was six, she got lost at Yosemite. For 30 minutes, we checked all the nearby area. As I was talking to a ranger, a van pulled up. A family had found her and were driving her around, hoping she'd see us or recognize something.

Judith A commented on February 6, 2010 - A friend also had this. She tried both - they were born with many issues. one went home after 3 months and several surgeries, other in hosp 9 mos, and they finally agreed to stop lifesavng measures. Will pray for you -not a choice anyone should face!
When my son was 13 moths old he followed his grandpa out the door. His grandpa ran over him with the car. The bumper hit him in the head making a deep gash and the tire ran over his arm breaking it. It was a nightmare but he recovered 100%, Thank God!

When our son was a month old and he was projectile vomiting. Turned out his stomach had sealed shut and was taken into surgery.The doctor couldn't tell us if he'd live... the wait was a nightmare.

Being diagnosed with cancer (personall) the day before our son's second birthday. Our daughter was 10 weeks old. Not knowing if I will be the one to rear them into the people they will one day become is terrifying.

At 1 my son was very smart and sneaky. He'd slipped out of the house without his dad knowing and was in the street when I drove around the curve in our subdivision. Scared the living crap out of me! I only thought what ifs for the rest of the day.

Hearing the words "Melissa's been hit by a car". I let her Trick or Treat with a friend & mother in another area. It took 10 minutes to get there & 5 emergency vehicles responded. Broken legs and collar bone but not the injuries of my nightmares.

When my daughter was about a year and a half, she had a febrile seizure. I had never heard of them so I was even more terrified. She has since had 5 more and they have each been scary. Fortunately, now I know what is going on!

We were camping at the lake and my 2 yr old son ran across to my in-laws campsite. A huge truck towing a trailer came barreling down the hill and from the angle I stood it looked like the truck bumper hit my son, but missed him by inches.

When my daughter was 2 weeks old she started breathing very strangely. I checked her and she was burning up. We took her to the ER as it was New Year's Eve. She had spinal meningitis and I caught it in 6 hours of taking hold in her system. She is 17 now.

Suzan V commented on January 22, 2010 - She also was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2000 and we had many scares with seizures...all probably related to the spinal meningitis at 2 weeks old. She will outgrow the epilepsy as it is from scar tissue and not a chemical imbalance. She is strong now.

My 3 yr old & 4 yr old both in an electric jeep heading down mile long driveway straight for road and husband & I running at top notch speed yelling only to have kids laughing and not stopping. When husband caught them, they said, "we are faster than you!

My husband was terminally ill, took a lot of medication. My 2 y/o got into it. The nurse was in another room, when she came back medicine was all over the floor and she didn't know what was missing. The ER ride was hell, but she was ok

The day of my son's christening while at the church I fell down the stairs with my son. I really thought he was going to die in my arms. I covered his head and turned to fall on my back. He had a small skull fracture, but no long term damage. Thank God :)

When my son as 21 months old, he suffered a seizure that lasted over an hour even with medical intervention. Watching my child foam at the mouth and convulse for an hour made me feel completely useless. After many tests, we never found the cause.

When my 3 year old got lost at a crowded beach for 15 minutes. I had turned my back to say something to my husband and when he turned back he had disappeared into the crowd. Two kind strangers walked him up and down the beach until we found him
Monday, when my 3 year old had been sick all weekend, took her to dr. they took x-rays and blood work. Thought she had a bowel obstruction so they took her by ambulance 80 miles to nearest childrens hospital. turns out it was just really bad gas.
My daughter has asthma and she passed out. A bath didn't bring her to. We rushed her to the hospital where the insertion of needles and tubes didn't wake her. They injected her, put her on breathing machines, much later she woke. It was the worst day ever

We were involved in a spin off on the motorway in the UK, where we come from. Another car did the same thing and landed on top of ours. All I could think of was getting my daughter out, in one piece. I did..but she lost a shoe. She was sad about the shoe.

Parents of toddlers should be terrified of pools, spas and ponds. Drowning is the # 1 cause of death of two year old children in the US, it's #2 for one year olds after birth defects, it's #3 for 3 year olds after car accidents and cancer. (CDC 2006)
My daughter was 13 yrs. old and had a certain time she was suppose to be home from school. When she wasn't home 5 mins. after her time I went looking for her. I found her hiding in some bushes..she said a man was stalking her and she had felt safe there

When my youngest was 2 I lost him in JCP. couldn't find him anywhere,when I heard the elevator chime, I lost it. An employee got off the elevator and told me she saw a child get off ALONE when she got on. He was downstairs in housewares..almost stroked

I've been pretty lucky. My most terrifying moment has been when my two year old pats my stomache and asks, "mommy, tree trunk?" I guess my stretch marks remind him of a wizened, old oak.
When my oldest son was 5, he was playing in the front yard with neighbor friends. I went out to check on him and they didn't know where he was. right when I was about to call 911 I found him asleep in his closet under a blanket. I had looked there twice!

My twin sons were born early, first day of 32nd week. They were taken to the childrens hospital right after birth. 33 hrs later I left to finally see them. Nobody could find them in the ICU nursery. 45 minutes later they took me to them in the PICU.
I took my 5 yr to the beach. She was tired of being in the water so I took her back to the blanket where my aunt was. I went back into the water, when I came out again she was gone. She walked 13 blocks looking for me. It was the worst 45 minutes ever.

My 2 yr old opened the locks of her grandparent's house and took off down the street while they were babysitting for us. We were still out shopping when my dad told me they'd lost her. Thank God, someone found her on a neighboring street and called 911.
My 27 month old decided to pull down on the oven door to check on the pizza I was cooking...though he knew what hot ment...his 11 month old sister crawled in after him and pulled herself up on the oven door burning both of her hands and arms :(

My son passed out at the vet's office - went into anaphylactic shock. Standing there while the EMT's worked on him was like an out of body experience. He's fine but it was the scariest day of my life. It was Asthma that had not been diagnosed.

This past Christmas, my son choked on a piece of hot dog and my mother did not notice. I saw him turn purple and struggling to breathe, my husband saved him by sticking his finger down his throat. He took a nap right after that and was fine. SCARY!

My 7 yr. old son's face went pale and terrified as he clutched the left side of his chest saying it hurts! it hurts! It felt like lightning hitting him. Called 911 and they couldn't find anything. Cause is still unknown but no heart condition found.Scary!

Lost my 4 year old in a huge theme restaurant. He zigged and I zagged. Caves, grottos, hiding places, video room. Finally, the police were called in. Another mom found him and took him to the gift shop. 45 minutes of pure terror!

Took 4 year old in to see doctor because he was having trouble breathing. Supposedly had H1N1. He had Empyema Pneumonia caused by a strep infection which collapsed his right lung and he had to be rushed to the PICU. Had to have surgery and chest tube

My daughter who has intractable epilepsy had a bad seizure at the age of 3 years old and she quit breathing we had to do cpr on her. Since then we have had to do it one other time a year later. She is 7 years old now still with intractable epilepsy!

On a family vacation with the kids we had a 4th floor room with a balcony. Heard the kids (5 & 7) on the balcony, looked out to see them balancing on the top of the railing. Screamed bloody murder and they jumped down, I was panicky for days.

I left my 2 months old on the Boppy in our bed while I went to get my 22 months old from her crib! As I got back to the room I saw him laying on the edge of the bed with his left arm hanging out! I was literaly seconds away from him falling off the bed!!

when my son was 4 weeks old, he slept for the first time for about 6.5 hours (he had never slept more than 2-3). when I woke up and realized how long it had been, I was slapping his cheeks in panic for what felt like forever before he finally woke up.

my husband & then 5yr old daughter was in a accident & she was being airlifted to the hospital. I get to the hospital and when asked to see her they told me they would get me a counselor.. My heart dropped I thought she had passed in flight. She was fine.

When my two-year-old ran back onto the elevator in a busy hotel and pressed a button... I didn't know where he was, if he'd stay on, if someone would take him... a hotel worker took him by the hand and went floor by floor to find me. Thank God!

When my daughter was just 13 months she vanished. After calling 911 and 2 hours of searching and calling for her we found her fast asleep in a VERY small drawer in the bathroom. We still have no idea how she fit. It was awful a heart stopping experience.

- when my sister was 3 she disappeared we called 911 everybody in the neighborhood was looking for her, there was even a helicopter. We finally found her sleeping between her mattress and box spring.

My 4 year old daughter was walking up the stairs of a giant inflatible slide ( 30 feet ) when something happened and it started to collapse. I knew I was truley a mom after that . I knew I saved her life as the weight of It fell behind us on our legs.

My daugter (at 2 yrs) and I were going down the deck stairs (about 8 steps) and I was holding her hand, had her car in my other hand. She saw a toy on one step, leaned forward to get it and I lost my grip on her hand. Luckily I caught her by the ankle.

It was when by boys were rough housing and I told them to "knock it off" and then I heard a scream. The younger boy had a bloody face and his two front teeth had been knocked out when he hit the floor. $3000 dental bill and no more rough housing ever.

When my son was 2 weeks old, I was exhausted from getting up during the nights to care for him and fell asleep while breastfeeding. Woke up the next morning still holding him but the blanket was over both of our heads. Luckily, he was fine.

My 1 y/o had a piece of a food and we were driving, I to look back at her her eyes were open and glazed over and she was limp with her jaw hanging open. I shook her foot and she didn't respond. I thought she was dead, but just sleeping with her eyes open.

The baby gate was left open and my 11 month old catapulted down our flight of very steep and long stairs. As I ran to her she was neither moving nor making any noise. After a long silence she started crying and ended up totally fine. Thank God.

8 wk old son got a strep infection from a child at child care. It put him in isolation in the hospital for 4 days, with the IV inserted into a vein in his head! Hubby and I were allowed to stay with him all 4 days! Pulled him out of that center ASAP!!

My son was about 10 m old. He climbed up and reached a highlighting comb. These have a 6 in metal "tail" on them. When he saw me coming, he tried to run for it. He fell and in SLOW motion I saw that comb miss stabbing him millimeters. Just grazed neck!!

When my I stood up and my Baby Bjorn unsnapped, my 4 month old tumbled headfirst onto the brick walkway. So far it looks like he has 't suffered no long term damage, but to this day I go up to strangers and tell them to keep a hand on their babies!

Out of the corner of my eye I saw the basement door open. As I reached out, he fell down the stairs, shot through the space in the stairs, hit a couple empty boxes and fell to the concrete. It happened so fast, yet felt like slow motion.

I was walking down a street and my finacee had my son in a stroller he suddenly bursted into a run as he saw the house and then he tripped the stroller over my son landed face first then he toppled over the stroller fortunatly nobody got hurt :D
Shortly after my Oldest son was assigned to a ship in the Navy and was deployed there was a newscast that a men from a Navy vessel was killed in the Persian Gulf. I read the full article and found it wasn't his ship.

My son was about 5 when he and his 4 year old friend got away from us during our trip to Galveston beach. I was frantic, fearful of a kidnapping or drowning. Finally we found him and his friend a few hundred yards away playing in the ocean.

- She had been in front of us all along and then she was gone..real fast like. We still don't know how it happened, but a ;lot of things are hard to explain anymore.
When my daughter was 15 mos old our dog bite her in the head. Put dog to sleep after this. Took daughter to hospital and you can't even see the scar on her head anymore. Scariest was seeing daughter's skull during the stitching of her head. Scary #1 child

The sound of my daughter tumbling down the stairs! I turned away for just a second (she was just over 1 year) and I heard her. I quickly ran to the bottom of the stairs (carpeted) and carefully checked everything. Thank god she was okay!

My 2 year old son stopped breathing (for about 30 seconds) when his trach became plugged. Good thing my husband and I know CPR - the ambulance didnt arrive until 5 minutes after we revived him! This was the longest 30 seconds ever!

My most terrifying moment was when my 3 yr old came in with blood all down his front. He'd fallen and his teeth had gone through his lip. He was ok after a trip to the doctor, but it was horrific looking seeing him like that.

Newborn daughter in her bassinet started choking on her spit-up. I was recovering from a c-section and literally couldn't move yet. It took the nurses much longer than necessary to come in that room! She stayed within arms reach after that.
