Yolanda R commented on October 24, 2009 - Unless your child is over the age of 14 is not OK to leave him/her alone in the car. If you have more than one kid, (2 or 3 tops) as long as one of them is at least 14 and responsible then a jump out of the car for a couple of minutes should be ok.

Yolanda R commented on October 24, 2009 - Also, if a cop happens to drive by and sees the child alone whether in a car seat or loose in the car and he is not old enough to be alone, you will have to deal with child wealfare and that may be one nightmare you want to avoid, like loosing your child.

Plan ahead, if you need gas, use a charge card so you can do it all from the side of the car. Go a drive thru ATM, a drive thru fast food lane, don't take a change with your most precious "cargo"!!!

Seona L commented on October 24, 2009 - Are you watching them while you are punching in your PIN, taking the reciept, etc.? It takes 30 seconds to snatch a child. It also takes 30 seconds for a child to choke on something. Bad idea, no matter what.

Melissa L commented on October 24, 2009 - Ok so you have the kid in a car seat carrier, you put the carrier down to punch in the your pin, big bad guy grabs the handle and runs off with your child. You may think you can keep your eye on you child 24/7., but lets be real here, you don't.

Layla F commented on October 24, 2009 - Car seats have to be in the back seat, facing backward... choking is as much of an issue when driving. There's only so much you can do. Just have to use your VERY BEST judgment in any given situation... considering temp, locale, time, distance, etc.

Pam F commented on October 24, 2009 - I think they are safer in a car you can SEE with locked doors than out with you while you're trying to juggle atm card/credit card etc. not paying as much attention to your child and them running off. If you can see them & the car is locked they're safer

Jana S commented on October 24, 2009 - By that logic, you should never leave your kid alone anywhere - even in the next room. They could choke if you leave them out of your sight anywhere for 30 seconds. It's just not realistic - or healthy I might add to hover over children to that extent.

A child is more likely to die in a car wreck than be stolen from a car, yet many of us drive multiple times daily with our kids in the car. I say assess the risk and follow your instincts. Keep the car in your line of sight and be quick.

I feel that it is more dangerous taking my wild 2 year old into a busy convenience store for 2 minutes to pay for a 1 item than it is to leave him LOCKED in the car where I can see it. In a crowded in and out place, he could be gone before I looked down.

We live in a small town, pretty safe place, and I will leave my 2 & 3 year old in the car if: I can see it, it isn't too hot or cold, I will be "gone" less time than it would take to get them out and back in. They can't unbuckle themselves, and I lock it.

Cindi W commented on October 24, 2009 - That TX case was absurd. I can guarantee that it is much safer to leave my nearly 5 y.o. in the car if I am trying to air up my tire or put water in my radiator than for me to hold his hand while I am doing it and other cars enter & exit the parking lot.

Sarah T commented on October 25, 2009 - no kidding. I couldn't find that case online, is it made up? (sarah in TX)

We never leave them in the car alone. Either one of us waits with them or we wake them up and get them out. There are a million things that could go wrong. Things happen so quickly.

NEVER, as even if your car is off and they are locked in a car, another car can hit your car & we all know the various things that can occur then... don't be lazy... it is your child's life and they didn't ask to be born.

Portia C commented on October 18, 2009 - it is not lazy! if it is cold, raining, or you are in a rush it is okay. Just keep in mind where you are, if it is not a safe neighborhood, don't! Valerie!

Lisa T commented on October 19, 2009 - I agree. My daughter did not start staying in the car until she was about 8 or 9. As for rainy days, since we live in Los Angeles, we don't have that many rainy days so I just make sure I didn't have to go on those days.

Naomi H commented on October 21, 2009 - I don't think it's ever okay to leave your young child alone in the car. It's not that difficult for a criminal to get your car unlocked quickly if he wants to and your child is visible to people passing by. In many states it is criminal negligence.

Tamberly G commented on October 25, 2009 - So if your car gets hit, your kids will be OK because you were in the car? You really think your presence is going to offer protection from accidents? Everyday driving is far more dangerous than parking in a space and walking 10 feet away from your kid.

Tamberly G commented on October 25, 2009 - I have heavily tinted windows and keypad entry. I leave it running because it's usually hot. No more than 10 feet away, always in view. I'm not lazy, I'm with my kids every day and I have errands - it's realistic. My kids don't fall back to sleep easily.

In Texas, it is legal to leave them unattended in a vehicle for up to 5 minutes. Walkup ATM's make me nervous anyway, so I probably wouldn't do it unless I had to. Gas stations are probably ok since I'm right there.

Shirley M commented on October 24, 2009 - Clarification - I'm ok with a Gas Station while I'm right at the pump. If I had to run inside, it would have to be absolutely necessary. Drive thru when possible or curb side service!

I was always paranoid about leaving my kids in the car because I heard a story in my hometown where someone stole a lady 's car with baby sleeping in it! BABY woke up and started crying and robber abandoned the car and police found car!

Here's my rule -- if you can see your car/the kids, you're okay. I tend to leave the car running if I'm running to an ATM. If I'm going inside the store, they generally come in.

In the state of MD it is illegal to leave your child in the car. Come on seriously nothing is important enough to leave you child even for a second, if you think it is o.k. then shame on YOU!!

If you need to go in to get a reciept call the person on your cell phone and tell them to come out to the car. Plus you don't want them at a Gas Station breathing those fumes any longer then you have to.

Melissa L commented on October 24, 2009 - what world do you live on. They wouldn't do that where I live at. I would just leave w/o the reciept.

It can be a hard decision to make. I guess it's probably ok if you can see your car at all times. Lock the door and be very quick. No shopping. Just about the amount of time it would take to return a cart is probably ok.

Sheila G commented on November 11, 2009 - I agree, I park next to the cart return area or do not bother to return it. ATM is harder to decide, you could be robbed while at an ATM with your child or someone could steal your car while you are at the ATM.

nothing found at a quick stop/atm is worth me risking my sons life over. anything can happen with kids, adding in a situation that you can't control and are possibly unaware of is a feature story on Nancy Grace.

I would leave them in to go to the ATM if the car is always in plain sight, but I would never ever go inside anywhere and leave the child in the car where they are out of sight for even a second!

Overall, not OK, BUT if the weather is right and you can keep a visual on the car and child and its very short, you do what you have to do. but one poster pointed out, if police officer sees and feels compelled to respond you will have to deal with that

Absolutely NOT. One moment of convenience could mean a lifetime of regret. Is that really worth the risk?

I cannot condemn or condone people for what they do because I (nor you) have any right to judge ANYONE, but if people are so worried about sex offenders why are they not fighting to give them harder punishment, like the death penalty.
