We buy US Savings Bonds. We got several when our children were small and we are saving them to help with college expenses. You buy them at half the face value and they start at $12.50 for a $25 bond.

Heidi R commented on November 15, 2009 - Books are always great and a child can never have too many. You can buy for now or for older.

Barefoot U commented on November 15, 2009 - yes definitely books 100 times over! Try ones which are not freely available in the shops, please read my friends blog about picking books for children http://cherishyourstories.blogspot.com/search/label/Children%27s%20Storytime%20%E2%99%A5

Anne Marie B commented on November 17, 2009 - Books are great for children of any age. There is a wonderful book called "What to Read When" for parents or others buying books for kids by Pam Allyn (I know Pam) that suggests books for different ages - a great guide to book buying! Check it out.

Fisher Price Roll-A-Rounds are great. They have some that make noise (Listen-Up-Rounds), some with interesting colors (Look-A-Rounds), some with different textures (Touch & Tickle Rounds) and more. Both my infant and my toddler play with them every day.

I was told just before my son turned one that every child NEEDS the Leap Frog Fridge Phonics. It is so true. He used it so much and my younger two use it daily! Great gift for a child in their younger years.

Because Discovery Toys are not sold in stores, the family is not as likely to already have them. Educational toys help children learn as they play: toys like Measure Up Cups, 12 stacking cups that baby can fill & dump in the tub. www.toysofdiscovery.com
