Check this out- making holiday gifts with kids. As a family we made cookie dough rolls (frozen) and passed them out to our friends. It was a hit! Here's the link for instructions-designdazzle.blogspot.com/2009/10/make-your-own-holiday-gifts-with-kids.html

We've purchased sheets of beeswax from our local art store and made tapers for neighbors. With older kids you can melt the wax and pour it into interesting molds like tin cans or containers like teacups

A handprint Christmas wreath. Use a template of the hand cut out 12-14 out of foam core. Glue (facing in the same direction) onto a cardboard/foam circle. Glue a picture in the center, adorn with red dots/pom poms and a bow. Attach a hanger on the back.

One year we did homemade hot cocoa mix. I think it was pretty much cocoa, powdered sugar, and powdered milk. I'd have to look up a recipe. Just mix and put in a canning jar and add fabric and ribbon or something to decorate.

Eye-glass holders! I cut a rectangle out of heavy felt, tho 3 layers of fabric would work too, folded it, sewed 2 seams and then my kids glued on flowers and sequins. Older kids could sew decorations.

One year we made stress balls. Get some neat looking balloons and a medium mouth funnel. Attach the balloon mouth to the funnel opening and fill the balloons with flour, to about the size of a child's fist & tie shut. These make great stocking stuffers.

Recycled Crayons! Use silicone molds, or Reynold's disposable cupcake molds. Remove wrappers from crayons, break into pieces, fill molds. Melt in an oven on low heat at 250-300 degrees. Cool and remove!

Family worked together to create gift baskets one year. I made hot chocolate and spiced tea mixes in holiday jars. My daughter and grandchildren baked breads and my daughter purchased mugs, napkins and baskets. Kids could help with the mixes too.

Laura_at_Our House of Joyful Noise R commented on November 17, 2009 - Oh good Ellen, and you're welcome and thank you. I gave the link to just the run of crafts we did as Christmas gifts, but then I was thinking that there are a lot of possible ideas throughout the whole entire Craft section there. Just click on Craft tab.

Laura_at_Our House of Joyful Noise R commented on November 17, 2009 - Also, maybe someone can vote for this link (besides me! lol) so it gets bumped up! : ) There are many great gift ideas for year-round there. The wrap jewelry comes to mind, for example. > EASY craft, fun for kids to help, beautiful gift.

This year, our Moms Group made calendars using washable paint & our children's handprints. They turned out so cute & what a great keepsake for loved ones (and us!). For example, January's handprints were made to look like mittens; May's were flowers, etc

Mosaic flower pots. We purchased purchased teracata pots, colored tiles & colored grout from Home Depot. We put the tiles in ziploc bags and my child broke them up with a hammer. Then we glued the different pieces onto the pot and spread the grout.

We collected fall leaves, interesting plant leaves, etc. and pressed them into books to dry. Then we covered picture frames in Mod Podge, and let the kids put their collections on the frames. Coat with another layer of Mod Podge to seal.

One of the favorite gifts I've made with past students was tin can luminarias. It's easy and very inexpensive. The basic necessities are: a tea candle, an empty tin can, bendable wire, paint, and ribbon. It takes less than 30 minutes to make.

Amanda F commented on November 14, 2009 - What size can did you use & what did you do wtih the wire?

Sandy D commented on November 14, 2009 - We've done this, too. The wire is for the handle. You can use whatever size can. The small ones fit a standard tea light, the larger take a larger candle.

I bought perler beads & forms on line for my granddaughter. Very inexpensive, she makes her own designs for magnets & Christmas tree ornaments and I bond them together with the hot iron & she puts magnets on or clear string & has gifts to give.

In the past I have made sugar scrubs for ladies, it's just regular sugar and olive oil with an extract of your choice-I usually use almond or peppermint. They have come out great and the girls have said it's the best they've had!

I remember making a pencil holder from a can. You put small pieces of masking tape all over the can. Then make the tape brown or black with shoe polish. Let it dry. Now you have a pencil holder!

We made ornaments using cookie cutters and a flour-dough mix that you bake in the oven. We pressed paper clips into the back for hooks. When cool we painted them and put some festive ribbon through the clip. My 7 and 4 year old really enjoyed this!

Gail M commented on November 28, 2009 - I used a recipe from a book called Angelina Ballerina's Christmas Crafts. 1 c cornstarch, 2 c baking soda, 11/2 c water. Mix in a large pot, stir until smooth. Cook over medium heat until texture is like mashed potatoes. see next comment

Gail M commented on November 28, 2009 - turn onto counter and cover with a damp cloth. When cool enough to handle, knead with cornstarch til smooth. Roll and cut with cookie cutters. Insert paper clip into back of each. Bake at 275 until hard, about 20 minutes. cool & decorate. Have fun!

My daughters brownie troop just made 35 "no sew fleece blankets" to pass out to our local retirement center while we sing Christmas carols. The blankets were a cinch to make & the kids loved doing it. Now we are going to make them for our grandparents.
