Zyrtec Causing Hyperness
I am a mother of a 3 1/2 year old girl, she has recently been put on zyrtec for bug bites, and she is also on and anti biotic for and ear infection and tylenol for a virus in her throt.
Yesterday she had a fever and this afternoon she had a fever and was very sleepy and not moving around much. I gave her the first dose of zyrtec at about 7pm because i was told by the phamacist it would make her sleepy, but it seemed to do the opposite. Maybe it is just coincidence that she started feeling better or it actually made her hyper. She was no joke bouncing from one end of the room to the next and it was almost like she was on hyperdrive when only an hour earlier she didnt even want to get up. has anyone else noticed there children have this same side affect? She was like a totally different child then she normally is and Im not sure i can continue to intentionaly make her behave this way for the 10 days she has been prescibed this for. Has anyone has a similar problem.

My daughter did the same thing. It made her irritable; she was even flailing her body on the ground and itching and scratching herself like she was having an "out of body" experience. Her pediatrician said that some children have this strange reaction. He quickly changed her medication to D-Allergy Jr.

Hi E.! How is it going with your little one? You received lots of good advice about considering benadryl instead of zyrtec. I had a couple of thoughts...
what bugs bit your daughter?
have you ever heard about a fever being a good thing for the body?
does your daughter have ear infections very often?
Hope your little one is feeling much better!

My 2 yr old has been on Zyrtec for almost 1 1/2 yrs now and I don't get the hyperactivity from it. He takes it every night around 8 pm just before bed (as needed...I don't give it to him when his allergies or asthma aren't flaring up). It's hard to say what might have made her hyper...I have noticed over the years that when my kids have a fever break they seem to get this energy boost and feel like a whole new kid for a little while. You might have to give it to her a couple of more times to be sure.

Hi E.,
Wow, your little girl is on a lot of pharmaceuticles. Zyrtec, antibiotics and tylenol is a heavy load for such a small body. Her liver and kidneys must be in overdrive tryng to process all these things. Which can cause hyperness.
If a body has reactions of any negative sorts that is not normal for that person then that means their body is not handling it well. I would not have such a young child on all those things. We do homepathes are our home or you can go to any natural wellness store and they can lead you in the right direction. You would be very surprised on how well natural rememdies do and the best part no bad reactions.
Good luck.

Hi E.,
I have a five year old who has been on zyrtec for 2 years now and I have taken zyrtec ever since it has been available. For my daughter and I it is a miracle drug! My daughter even takes the 10 mg which is the adult dose because her allergies and eczema are so bad. For us we notice the opposite, but not right away. We take ours in the morning and around 3 in the afternoon we are tired, but I would say for my daughter it does hype her up a bit in the morning but it brings her back down in the afternoon. I would say that you should move it to the am and give it a few days before you decide to not use the zyrtec. Hope that helps! A. (c:
