Zofran Use During Pregnancy

I was prescribed Zofran, but only used it a couple of times. It helped when I took it, and didn't give me any side effects or complications...but again, I only used it once or twice. My sister-in-law had horrible sickness and took medicine & didn't have any complications either. If you still want to do some research, maybe call other OBGYN's to get their opinion. A lot of them will give you advice over the phone. Or look up on the internet to see if you can find anything. Hope you feel better soon..& don't worry, it will be worth it once you have your angel n your arms! :)

hi there, i am not sure if you have alreay tried this, but what about good ole fashion ginger.

i chop up ginger root, boil it, and pour it in my tea (with sugar and sometimes lemon). you can buy it at regular grocery stores.

ginger has been linked to help with upset bellys (hense ppl suggesting ginger ale when sick) etc. when i was pregnant, i was nausous (sp?) 25 hours a day.. i even felt it when i slept. there were certain commercials i couldnt watch becuz they made my stomach turn. and at the time ppl told me to each ginger snaps (made with real ginger) i didnt do the ginger root thing then becuz i didnt know about it. but i cant imagine it not having the same effect.. plus i would much rather try something natural then pills, especially during the first couple mnths.

they used to use it in the old days... and it also is a natural antiboitic (sp?).. i have been using it in my "sleepy time" tea lately at night with all the colds etc going around.. and so far everyone else has had a bad cold and i havent..

I didn't have to use Zofran when I was pregnant, but I have a friend who did and it made a tremendous difference for her. She was actually able to function again. She was soooooooooo sick and already had a toddler and she was MISERABLE. Once she started the Zofran, she was just herself again. I don't remember her being on it for a really long time- a couple weeks? She didn't have any side effects and the baby was as healthy as they come! (and soo cute too!!!) Good luck!!! I loved it...Dont go another day without it..I swear by it..I had no complications when I took it..I carried a baby with downs syndrome which I was told would throw my hormones off a bit more..I had morning sickness almost all the way through the entire pregnancy..I would take one of those pills the minute I felt queezy and within 20 min I was functioning like a semi normal pregnant woman..My son came early but he was completely fine...and doing great.. good luck

I believe that is what I was on during my 1st trimester. The same pill they give to chemo patients for nausea? I worked like a charm. I couldn't even keep water down I was so sick. It is safe and it really helped. It was the only way I could have made it through. Good luck, believe me I sympathize. By the end of the 4th month you should be back to normal.

I have two healthy boys (29 months & 8 months). I took Zophran with both pregnancies - for survival. Everything worked out great. Happier pregnancy & healthy babies! :)

I suffered HG with both of my pregnancies....Zofran was the only thing that saved me from having a feeding tube. I was that sick all the time. My ob and my midwife have kids of their own and they told me that they don't prescribe something they wouldn't take themselves. Both my kids came out healthy and fat for as sick as I was, 9lbs and 7lbs 13 oz. When we have another one Zofran will be prescribed before my prenatals are. Hi, S., I'm glad to hear from you again. TAKE THE ZOFRAN!! I was sick CONSTANTLY. Several ER trips, out of work. I could not function. You have insurance, right? It's expensive. Take it, your doctor wouldn't give you something that could hurt the baby, or you. Also, I had no complications. You'll feel better. Good luck.

My comments are probably out of place, but I thought it wouldn't hurt. I'm not sure if this is your first pregnancy or not or how far along you are. Althought I know a lot of women go through morning sickness their whole pregnancy, most women I personally know started feeling a lot better in their fourth month. And you mention Nausea but not vomiting or anything else. I don't know what other people recommended before, but it seems that everyone whose responded about Zofran had some serious morning sickness. I'm in my third pregnancy now and the morning sickness this time was the worst of all. I don't vomit (thank God) but I do experience unbearable and debilitating nausea. My doctor recommended a prenatal vitamin that contained certain ingredients to alleviate things and from the first day I took it I felt completely well. Some foods still affect me, but that would happen anyway. What's interesting, I'm in my fourth month now and (as the past pregnancies indicate) I should be past this stage, but I forgot to take my vitamin the other day and was miserable. The vitamin is called Prima Care One, I know it contains B6 and Omega 3s but I'm not sure what else helps with the nausea. Like I said, I'm sure this is out of place at this point, but just in case.

My last pg, I took Zofran. It was the only thing that somewhat helped.

I had 4 other kids at that time and I had to get 2 of them to and from school, so I couldn't take anything that would make me sleepy. I still had to take care of the other 2 at home.

So that ruled out a bunch of meds.

Finally I said I want Zofran and it helped me. I still felt yucky, but not AS yucky and rather than throwing up 5 times a day I went down to 1 or 2.

I ended up using it from about 9 weeks till I hit about 21 weeks along.

The only bad part of it was the HORRIBLE constipation! It was so bad. I would cry everytime I had to go to the bathroom.

I responded to your first question about what to do to help morning sickeness. I ended up on Zofran at 8 weeks. I was in and out of the hospital. I couldn't eat or drink anything. I couldn't walk in my kitchen without dry heaving in the sink. IT was sooo bad. I was a walking zombie during the day. I took it until week 19 then managed the little bit of morning sickness for about a month more. I had no side effects on me or my baby. One thing..its very expensive...

I never used Zofran but a couple of things that helped me when I was pregnant were eating 5 small meals a day eating ginger candy and drinking homemade ginger ale--there is somethiing about ginger that settled my stomach so that I kept the food down. I had migraines too, but I just took prescription motrin for that.

I used it and it worked like a charm. I was very sick to the point that I could not go anywhere. I threwup all day long and finally the dr gave Zofran. As far as I know it didn't cause any complications. The only thing I remeber is that it made me very thirsty for some reason which was not a bad thing.

I took Zofran for my second and third pregnancies. It was the miracle I needed. I worried during both pregnancies about taking the medication but my children are fine. I would highly recommend it.

I had hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness) with both my pregnancies, but much much worse with my 2nd pregnancy (I gave birth 11/2004). I was sick 24 hours a day for the entire 9 months. After multiple different medications (Phenergan, Reglan) and many trips to the Maternity ER at the local hospital, my OB finally put me on Zofran. I only needed to take it once a day, first thing in the morning, and I was fine...if I didn't take it, I was immediately sick. I had to take right up until the day I had my C-section. I couldn't take it that morning and ended up getting sick during surgery...even though I hadn't had anything to eat. I tell you all this to let you know that without the medication there is no way the baby (who is now going to be 2 in a few weeks) or I would have survived my pregnancy because I was so violently ill. i took zofran during my 3rd pregnancy because as the first responder said- i had to somehow function and take care of my other kids!!! it definitely took the edge off- i wasnt throwing up as much and i could function better.i think i cut the pill in half each time just to see if that helped and then would add the other half as needed. i was scared at first - i didnt take any meds before this, into natural birth, all that stuff, but it made enough of a difference to change my thinking. no complications for me, i stopped taking it when i felt better.

I had morning sickness too. Since I hated taken drugs while I was pregnant, even Tylenol, I would sniff peppermint. It might sound nuts but it really worked. Before you sit up in the morning, take few deep breaths of peppermint.
In through your nose and out through your mouth. You can find the oil at any food store. You can also put a dab on your wrists and sniff throughout the day even before you start to feel sick.

I took Zofran and loved it! I had no side affects at all. I felt like a new person when I started taking it. Most important thing is to remind yourself it's all worth it and it wont lasat forever! Soon you will have a beautiful baby in your arms!

Like you i had all the time morning sickness. I ended up being diagnosed with hyperemisis gravadarum.(i think thats how its spelled)Anyway i was given zofran and it didnt give me any complications but for me it didnt relieve the throwing up.
