Young Daughter with Heartburn

My daughter has felt like she needs to throw up for about a month. We took her to the doctor yesterday, and they said that she is basically having heartburn. They prescribed PREVACID to her. I'm wondering if there are any other moms out there that have had their children on this and how long term the medication is used for. I would also LOVE to have some natural treatment for this. My chiropractor suggested probiotics. Anybody with experience in that either. Please help! I'd love to avoid the drugs!

My 10 month old daughter has been on Prevacid for acid reflux for about 5 months. It works wonders! We are slowly weaning her off of it and she seems to be doing well. I really didn't want to give her drugs either, but if it helps her feel better, I am all for it.

I would check with your daughters dr first about adding anything with prevacid. My son was on prevacid and we did try not feeding him certain things, esp. fruit and nothing seem to work as well as the Prevacid. He was weened off of it and every once in a great while will need a couple of days of it, usually after he eat something with spices in it. I have notice a great deal of different when he give him Lifeway Kefir(a probiotic yogurt drink) everyday. He does not have reflux as bad as others.

Good luck.

I was on prevacid and I did not like it. It cuts down on the acid your stomach is producing and while it helped the heartburn, I had a hard time digesting my food!

Have your daughter tested for food allergies or intolerances. Once I cut the foods out I was allergic to the reflux stopped. If you don't want to get her tested you can do it yourself by the "elimination method." Google it, you have to elimiate all allergens and then slowly add them back in and see which ones are reacted too. Also, a food allergen can affect the person up to 4 days after it is eaten, so it's hard to tell what someone might be allergic to!

Probiotics ARE wonderful! I highly suggest you skip the prevacid (like the other poster suggested) and get on a good probiotic as well.

Kombucha tea has also helped me. You can get it at the health food store or Whole Foods, it's a fizzy, fermented drink. Have your daughter start on only a very small amount (1/4 cup) and slowly build up. If she drinks too much at once she could get sick. Kombucha tea is not actual tea, and has friendly bacteria that our bodies need.

Good Luck!

Hi S. You didn't say how old your daughter was but ask her doctor about any home remedies first. If he says it's okay, there is a web site call Home Remedies. I've used it and it's very helpful.

Have you tried yogurt? I also agree with pro-biotic. Amway sells one that can be mixed with water. My son sells Amway so I bought some from him and I like the mixing with water over taking a pill.
Did the doctor test her from being lactose intolerant? People who have a cow milk problem can get a lot of acid problems. Try switching to soy milk or goats milk.
She could also have a problem with wheat and gluten. these would cause stomach problems also but milk is a more likely culprit.
e-mail me if you would like to know more about the powder probiotic.

God bless,
S.

Hi S.-

Ahhh the conventional medical community's answer to a symptom-prescribe something to mask it instead of "fixing" the problem. Forgive me but drugs are not the answer for children or adults. The underlying problem is the food. While your chiropractor is correct, probiotics (and a good clean one such as miessence, florajen or american health are safe), that will help the issue. Also many times heartburn, acid reflux, IBS and all digestive issues are a food intolerance problem such as gluten and dairy sensitivities.

Start by modifying what you are eating!! Stay away from boxed processed foods and incorporate more organic fruits and veggies coupled with the probiotics you should noticed an immediate change!! Also try food elimination. cut out the dairy first and doing the other things mentioned, it should improve greatly in a mater of 2-3 days.

We use probiotics everyday and have for years.

Let me know if you have more inquiries.

My 10 year old daughter has had "sour stomache" on and off for years. With her I've found that limiting dairy has really made a huge difference. We went to the doctor and did the whole prevacid thing too. It did not make her feel any better than just watching what she eats and then the occasional Tums when she does have that ice cream cone after having had cereal with milk for breakfast.

Depending on how old your daughter is...my last bout of stress induced reflux was controlled by drinking 1 cup of water w/a tbsp. apple cider vinegar and some honey to taste (I did this once in the am and once in the pm). It was nasty tasting, although it was better if it was room temperature and if I drank it quickly. While it most certainly could be a food allergy of some sort, is she old enough to have stress? Has she been behaving differently otherwise? You may want to check, maybe less apple cider vinegar depending on how old she is. You could check w/your doctor too to see what might be best. Many doctors will work with you for a more natural approach if you let them know that is your preference.
