Yoga DVD Recommendations

My 14 yr old daughter has been asking for Yoga Classes. I looked around & determined this was way out of the budget, so I got her to comprimise with (at least to start) a DVD and a mat. She has had a life peppered with sports and dance, fully agile enough- so would you ladies be able to recommend a DVD and perhaps what to look for in a mat?

What can I do next?

If you have cable that offers "on demand" shows, there are some great yoga and fitness programs available.

I like Gaiam yoga disks. Yoga Zone is a good place to start as well. I agree with PP, check the library. She can try a few different ones and see if there is one she likes.
Do look in to a beginner's class for her because there is so much you can't learn from a DVD. I was really surprised in college when I started a class after doing DVDs. I didn't realize how wrong some of my positioning had been. Even if she just went a few times and then did the DVDs, I think it would be beneficial. Happy Yoga-ing!!

Hi L.,
I too love Yoga. I have been taking a class at my local hospital and it is quite reasonable. I have researched Yoga at regular studios and that is way out of my buget but the hospital makes it doable for me. You might check it out. In my area (Indianapolis Suburban Westside)I found a yoga class for $5 a class! Hope you can find either a class or a good DVD for your daughter! Namaste!

As far as a mat go to a health club that offers yoga classes and ask the instructor directly. Tell her your thinking of joining the class and want to buy a mat to ensure you will stick with it. However I think they are all pretty much the same. As far as a DVD see if you can sample see some on the net. You/she may like one persons style/voice better than someone elses.
Have fun. My kids and I watch my yoga DVD about 2X a week.

Just make sure the mat has some cushiness to it and that she can lay her entire body on the mat. As for a dvd, I like Wai Lana and her Dvd's. They're all pretty much the same but I become relaxed as soon as I hear her voice. Good luck. Be glad she's looking for ways to stay active. (and it's also supposed to have positive emotional impact)

Check out your public library and see what they have available.

I love yoga but it is also out of my budget! I do find some shows on cable sometimes (we have dish, used to have time warner which had a lot more)

But - I also use DVDs and recommend anything with Shiva Rae - she has a good reputation and seems to be kind of an expert. I think she is also endorsed by Gaiam. She has a very nice voice and gives good instruction for being a DVD.

I also recommend a Gaiam mat (have them at target) - and instead of buying blocks or straps - use soup cans and belts

If she gets really into it - a class or two is not a bad idea just to make sure she is doing it right and not hurting herself.

Your local library may have a selection in the non-fiction DVD section. That would be a free way of seeing how it goes before investing further into it. A mat is not strictly necessary if you're not sure. Just use a camping mat or small rug. If you're on carpet, you don't even need anything.

For reviews on DVDs, I've found the reviews on Amazon quite helpful.
