Yellowing Sink

Many months ago, I would regularly scrub my white sink with Comet. Then I had twins and my mother in law did the dishes for me for three months. Now I've started doing my own dishes again and have found that my sink is kind of yellowing. I've tried the normal comet and a sponge, and also steel wool. I can't get the yellow to go away. Has anyone else had this happen? What did you do to get your sink white again? Am I stuck with it being tinted yellow?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried the magic eraser and it really made a difference! It's not quite where I want it to be, but it's so improved that I won't be embarrassed anymore when someone sees my sink. I'll try some of the other ideas when I get a chance. Thank you everyone!

I have the easiest solution for you! Get a Mr. Clean magic eraser. They work on everything. My sink gets yellow all the time and all it takes is a quick swipe of the eraser and it is sparkling white again.

One day I scrubbed forever with all sorts of bleach and nothing. I decided to try the eraser and it was awesome. You don't even have to scrub, just wipe!!

There is a great website that helps me keep my sink very clean, and is helping take steps towards keeping up the rest of my house! :D its Flylady.net. She says to fill up the sink with water and put in a cup of bleach into it. Let it set for no more then an hour, then scrub with something and rinse out. Rinse really really good. Then use Comet on the sink, and it will return to its newish shine. Its very important to rinse after bleach, because the comet and bleach gets mixed can make harmful fumes. Its a great site with many helpful hints. Good Luck!

Congrats on your twins! You must be so busy. I wish you the best.

What I use for my sicks is Magic Eraser. I use it on everything it is wonderful. It even works when my son draws on my daughter's dolls! It is amazing stuff and I do not know what I would do with out it. I even use it in the bathroom too. It really helps with all of the build up in the sink. I hope this works for you too. Good luck!

Take care,

I hate my white-prone-to-yellowing sink too! You have gotten great suggestions! I will try them too. I have been using Oxyclean spray in mine and I do it when it can have time to sit and work. It works pretty well!

My favorite product to get stains out of my sink (yellowing, rings, anything) is called Barkeepers Friend. It's a powder similar to Comet (same type of container too), but there's just something about it that's like magic. Stains disappear with hardly any elbow grease.
You should be able to find it in most grocery stores, and I know they have it at Walmart.

Good luck.

1.Dry sink
2.Squeeze some dish washer soap in a circle
3.spread around with a brush type thing (bottle brush works good for me)... cloth doesn't work cause it wipes up the soap
4.let set for 30 mins
5.scrub with a scrubby sponge
6.rinse well

I figured this out by mistake, I had dripped some dishwasher soap in my sink and didn't bother to rinse it...must have been busy doing something lol. Came back later that night and had a white spot! So I started experimenting. The KEY thing is to make sure the sink is dry and the brush are dry, you don't want to dilute it.

Hi L.,
My mom came to stay with us when I had my first son. She went out and go this stuff called Zud. It's a heavy duty cleaner that isn't harsh. I didn't realize that the sink was getting yellow until it was white again. I use it now about once a month to get it white again. Good luck.

Another idea, (which I've never tried in this fashion), is to use lemon juice on it. I know that soaking your fingernails in fresh lemon juice will fade the yellowing of your nails.
This is a safe, non-toxic possibility.

Just spray you sink with Bleach. Let it sit for a bit, yellow is all gone, rinse sink. Do not ever use comet, ajax with bleach it will cause a deadly gas. Comet and Ajax will over time crack you sink. I have a cleaning business. Use soft scrub with bleach to get scratches. Hope this helps.

depending on what it's made up,, fill up the sink with hot water and pour in straight bleach.
let it sit for a few hours or how ever long you can without using it.

other than that,, i haven't found anything to clean my sink either.

that same thing happened to me when i was in the hospital on bed rest and four weeks later come home and my one toilet had some weird redish orange stains on the inside.. still can't get them off even with bleach.. and it's been 3 years..lol
ugh..

I actually use the antibacterial scrubbing bubbles spray and the magic eraser sponge from mr clean, i think it is called, it does work magic. It is totally nonabrasive and gets out anything. You can even use the sponge on your walls for pen marks, scuffs, etc. It is absolutely wonderful sponge.

I have the same problem with my bathroom sink and counter top. When we got our house it had been vacant for a few months and not cleaned in awhile.

The first timed I cleaned it I got it very close to white but now no matter what it is a cream/yellowish color. It looks horrible (dingy and old)... I am thinking about just replacing it because I am sick of scrubbing it.

Sorry I don't have any advice just thought I would let you know that there is someone else with the same frustration. It will be interesting to hear what others suggest!

Lime Away. It takes stains out quick. It is a strong chemical though and make sure you mix it with water but it works great!
