Yeast Infection & Diaper Allergy?

I have an 8 month old daughter. She has had a yeast infection for about 5 weeks now! I took her to the Dr. at the beginning. When she had the rash for 3 days. He presribed some yeast infection oinment. I put that on three times a day FAITHFULLY. It started to go away, then came back, but not as bad. Then it came back full force again. I took her again to the Dr. after three and 1/2 weeks of the ointment her precribed. He said it may be the fact that I had switched diapers. I was using pampers and never had a problem. Then I switched to wal-mart brand. He thinks it's a combination of irriation caused by the diapers and the yeast infection. I'm very concerned that she's had it this long. Today it looks like it's getting better. It looks kinda like it's drying out. kinda scaley looking. Not as red either. The pharmisist said to mix the ointment with hydrocortisone cream. Just wondering if anyone else has been thru this?? I switched back to pampers also. Has anyone else's baby had reactions to the "cheaper" diapers? Thanks so much. S.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I have tried many of the things that were suggested. Thank you very much. It was healing up very well by last Friday and then when I got home from work on Sat. (after my husband had her all day) it was all red again. I was not happy. So I started again. He said he had put the cream on when he was supposed too but I don't think he was changing her as much as I was. I let go hang around with no diaper when she's home with me. I've been giving her yogurt, switched back to pampers, been putting on her yeast cream and desitin and hydrocortisone cream. It seems to be healing up pretty well tonight. Still there a bit though. I can't believe how long it's been hanging on. If it comes back again I'm going to take her back to the Dr. again. Thanks again for all the help.

There are some things you just cannot go generic on....one of them is diapers. I went through the same thing with my oldest daughter and I quickly switched back to Pampers(they are the best!) Yeast infection cream mixed w/hydrocortisone cream is what I used, and Desitin at night(the creamy version does not work as well as the original, as it sticks better.) Dryness is the key!

Yes my kids had the same reaction to all throw away diapers so stick to the kind that works. Also feed her yougurt this will help with the yeast infection.

I am sorry to hear that your little one has had this problem so long. My 3 yo daughter had a few yeast infections when she was younger but they never lasted that long. I don't know any other solutions as for creams and diapers but I can say that a natural cure is yogurt. I am not sure if you have introduced her to any dairy yet, I know my pediatrician said we could start at 6 months. The yoBaby brand, although a bit pricey, is great for little ones since it is maid with whole milk. The acidophilus in the yogurt naturally helps fight the bacteria in the yeast infections. I hope she gets better soon, good luck!

Disposable diapers are made are made using all kinds of chemicals that can irritate a babies skin. I had to switch my daughter to Tushies, a brand that does not contain any chemicals. Since doing so she has not had any rashes. Make sure you are letting her air out as much as possible with no diaper on, and change her as soon as she wets even the smallest amount. Before discovering Tushies I used to add a little thyme oil (like the spice) to my daughter's diaper cream, and that did wonders...it cleared up a serious rash in a couple days! You can find it in a natural food store.

It could be an allergy to the diaper brand. They put lotions and powders in the inside of the diapers, and while some brands may be fine, others are not for particular kids. Once you have a yeast infection, you're prone to them and whatever caused it in the first place.

Something you can do is use Lotriman cream if the ointment doesn't appear to be working. Rx's can get spendy, and Lotriman will do the trick on yeast infections. It can be mixed with diaper rash cream like Balmex or Desitin, or plain milk of magnesia.

You can also AVOID anything with corn in it. That means no corn prodcuts to eat, and no cornstarch baby powder. Yeast thrive on corn. Also keep acidic foods low, so I'd minimize the fruits and acidic veggies, and fruits and veggies that give her loose stools.

Since she's 8 months old, she's old enough for yogurt. Live bacteria cultures in yogurt help tummy troubles, UTI's, and yeast infections. The acidophilus in the yogurt actually eat the yeast.

You could try letting her bottom air out as much as possible. Keep it clean, but don't use commercial wipes. Use paper towels that are damp and after a bath, rinse her with clean water, and if possible, let her go without her diaper for as long as you can, then apply the cream/ointment before putting the diaper back on.

If you find that you're having issues with different diaper brands, I would recommend cloth diapers on top of everything else.

buy kefir in the natural foods section of your store. it's like yogurt only way better in terms of probiotics. feed some kefir to the baby (straight or mixed in some oatmeal) and also put some directly on the rash. you will be amazed how quickly she heals. worked with all 4 of my kids. like a charm! good luck!

My daughter had an ongoing yeast infection, also. I was told it was common to nursing babies. She developed it at 9 months and it was her first ever infection. The dr told me to put Lotrimin cream (over the counter athlete's foot cream) on it 5 times a day and cover that with Desitin or Balmex. The key to getting it to go away was to continue this regimen even after the symptoms were completely gone for an additional 5 days. I did this and it worked. Good luck:)

I was told by a nurse friend of mine that the Babies R Us brand (Especially for you?) is made by Pampers and is cheaper. You could check that out.
