Yard Sale Display Ideas?

What clever or useful display ideas have you seen for yard sales? I always struggle with the huge amount of preparation, complicated by the "Early Birds" arriving 2 hours before the published start time. Even if you say "no early birds" they don't care. I have a garage where I can set things up the day before, but even so, hauling out the heavy stuff is time consuming.

I'm trying to organize books by topic in milk crates or liquor store boxes (they're free) that I just turn sideways so they look like a bookshelf. I have some bookshelves I can use, but again, it's hard to move them out when they're fully loaded, due to the weight and the fact that stuff falls out if I'm not careful.

I've seen people put a broomstick or shower rod between a couple of step ladders to create a place for hanging clothes. What's a good way to display jewelry - I have costume stuff and I want to set up a Halloween corner for cheap costume accessories (Mardi Gras beads and so on). I've also seen people put out a big tarp or sheet, and everything on this tarp is $1 and everything on that one is $2, etc.

How do you feel about pricing things in batches? I've seen people tie 6 books together with string so you have to buy all 6 for $2. I've seen them fill a basket with craft supplies or sewing goods and sell the whole thing for a fixed price. I don't want to be selling stuff for 10 cents - I'd rather say $1 and you have to take 6-10 things. Is it best to let the customer do that or is in unmanageable that way? We have a bunch of books in categories: for example, 12 Shakespeare plays in paperback (sell them together?), 8 books on food/nutrition, 6 on sports, 5 on women's studies, and so on. Sell them in "sets" just to move them and reduce the price, even if the buyer doesn't want them all , they can re-sell? They never put anything back once they look at it. It's a good way to get rid of stuff if you're moving or if you just don't want to haul the unsold stuff back inside. I really want to get rid of anything I put out there.

I have lawn chairs, beach stuff (umbrella, beach buggy, chairs), clothing, jewelry, books, knickknacks, fabric I'll never use for crafts or dresses, some kitchen stuff, some tools & yard/garage stuff, the Halloween costume accessories I mentioned.

I have some tables and can borrow more from my neighbors but it's the labor I'm trying to control - I think if I were more creative and organized, it would be easier. I'd LOVE all your tried and true ideas! Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I agree with Mom B, price EVERYTHING. Nothing makes me walk away from a yard sale faster than a seller I have to ask about prices, or an "make me an offer" seller. I also wouldn't group the books together. You could put a cute sign out that says, 6 hardbacks for $5 or something. People will generally buy more if they feel like they're getting a deal. My only other tip is to price fairly, but be open to take less. If it's something you only want to sell for x amount then don't budge, but be prepared to haul it back inside if it doesn't sell. I always keep my prices close to asking on Saturday, but will take almost anything Sunday just to get rid of it. Sounds like you have a lot of great stuff! Hope you have a successful sale!!

Oh, early bird tip- I always say, "Hi! I'm not quite finished setting up yet, but feel free to look around and let me know if you have any questions." But then basically just go on doing what I was doing, and ignore them unless they have a question. It kinda sends the you know you're too early message without sounding rude and scaring them away. After all, they're there to spend money.

I do garage sales as part of my business.

Remember you are doing this, no so much to make money as to GET RID of this stuff. They are paying you to take it away.. If they do not buy it, you will have to deal with disposing of it. I would rather get something than nothing.

I have my husband hang a long rod from our carport, But the ladder thing works. for hanging clothing.

Do not do the group of books,. Except, childrens books. adult books, hard bound and paper back,, do not even organize them..
People that want books, know what they want.. It is not worth the effort.
Since we have a huge resale book company down here, we only get $1.00 for hard backs and .50 for paper backs. The exception is children's hard bound books. They can sell for a bit more. You can just place them on a table with the spines facing up.

Clothing is best if it all one price.. Example, Mens Dress shirts or collared shirts You decide if they are name brand and in excellent condition $5.00 each, but take $2.00

Tshirts all 50 cents

Dresses, depending on condition and name Brand.. $10.. but take $3.00 the last day to get rid of them.

I tie together, groups of kitchen utensils, I use cheap curly ribbon

I use cheap ziplock bags for groups of odd items. Small toys, Odd and end Greeting cards that have never been used, odd and end ribbons, bows, samples of bath creams, shampoos.. old christmas ornaments, broken jewelry, pairs of socks, Partially used jars of spices, envelopes of soups, oatmeal.. etc..

Partially used rolls of gift wrap paper can be tied together with curly ribbon, ,

I fold up sets of old towels.. Or I will fold 3 to 4 wash clothes and tie a ribbon around them.

I really trey to have tables. I borrow or I rent them.. I set them up the night before and that morning I just unload the boxes of stuff I have prepped.

Kitchen stuff, Children clothing, Mens clothing, womens, clothing, Decorative stuff. Vases, clocks, lamps.. Bathroom stiff, Christmas and holiday stuff. all of these items have their own area on a table or in boxes., You can even turn boxes over and put boards on them. to turn them into tables.

People do not like bending over to look at things on the ground. It makes it not look important. I usually continually place items on tables as things are sold..

I set up furniture together in one area. I make it look cute with a lamp, a rug, whatever.. Sometimes, people will purchase all of it.

Make sure if you are selling things that need to be plugged in you have at least an extension cord. I use a multiplug so several things can be plugged in at once.

Some things you can group price. When I sell at mom to mom sales I do all clothing $1 each, unless otherwise marked.

I would do something like 50 cents per book or 4 for a dollar or whatever, but not tie them. Really, I would not want 6 nutrition books. Maybe 2, but not 6.

Crafty stuff, I would bundle it. You are right, you don't want to deal with 10 cents each on stuff.

Have a few things out for 25 -50 cents out for kids though in the toy and crafty stuff. Parents usually give the kids a few bucks and it is nice when they can afford things.

Remember what your goal is, too. If you really want to get rid of it, price it to sell!

Have fun and good luck!

A couple of things I can think of....

Be sure things are priced.... I HATE asking for the price on things......

Also, I don't like to have to bend over to the ground to sort for stuff.... People around here sometimes just lay stuff out on tarps... that really annoys me. I also don't like to have to dig through boxes to look at baby clothes, especially.

As far as selling the books in sets, I doubt that I would buy them that way. I would most likely pass on the entire set if I had to buy them all.

It sounds like you are really trying to make sure it is organized, and I'm sure the shoppers will thank you!

You've got some great tips, wanted to send a couple more. Ambiance can go a long way, even at a yard sale. Make people want to linger & shop. Play upbeat music in the background, maybe changing the era occasionally to suit the current clientele (thank u pandora!). Have scented candles burning, or spray room freshener every so often. It may seem silly outdoors, but people will notice even if on a subconscious level. Have some small sweet treats out for your customers. Sure you could do candy, but getting a tub of those mini cookies & putting them in a basket take little effort & looks more homey. Set up an activity table for the kids. Some coloring book pages, or copies from one & crayons, string with odd buttons & beads to make necklaces, even a tub of dry rice with different sized cups & containers for pouring -anything to keep kiddos distracted. Clothing can be hung on clothesline tied between two trees. Make sure you have plenty of small bills & change & also lots of empty grocery bags and liquor boxes for people to take home their loot. Lastly put a few "flash" pieces out closest to the road or wherever you will have the most people see it going by. Do you have something very old, unusual, or ridiculous? Put it out & some will stop by just to see what else would be for sale along with it. Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

-Hang clothes (they sell better)
-Use tables to set out knick knacks b/c ppl hate to bend down to look @ things
-Group like itmes (knick knacks, Halloween costumes) jewelry etc)
-Use carts or wagons wheels if you have them to car things out to display.
Easy to roll back in.
-A bookshelf to display books is great!
-Hang necklaces on a jewelry tree or use something else you have. You can even take a big tree branch, spray it gold, stick it in a pot w/sand/dirt
& hang necklaces, earrings & bracelets
-Display rings in a jewelry box. (again they sell better)
-Put the big stuff out on driveway where ppl can see it when they drive by.
Better chance of them stopping if the sale looks big w/lots of stuff.
-Fold the fabric & lay on a table so they can see it.
-Hang Halloween costumes
-Take things out of boxe (they sell better)
-If you really don't want to haul the unsold stuff back in, price it right!
-Price to sell!!
-Label everything with a price so ppl don't have to ask. Sells much better!
-Make sure things are clean

You are very organized. One thing that I disagree with is on haggling. My prices are always at the cheapest that I will take. Therefore, if I run to the toilet, my son or a pal can know the price and haggle it down.

Another suggestion is to have a pal with you to help watch for sticky fingered shoppers.
