Yard Sale 5/16

We tried having a yard sale today but the weather did not cooperate. If the weather is better next weekend we plan on trying to have it again. What is the best newspaper to advertise the yard sale in? I noticed that people put there zip codes in the advertisements also. Is that helpful? We will be putting up about 3 or 4 signs but we think a newspaper will help. We are also going to put notes in our neighbors mailboxes letting them know so we can maybe get more families to have a yard sale also. TYIA!

What can I do next?

I have found bright signs are more effective than advertising is. The ad costs so much anymore and not as many people take the newspaper as they use to. The signs attract a bigger group of people and you can take them up and down whenever you want. Good luck!

It's against the law to put anything in mailboxes unless you pay the postage. Put it on their front door. Also signs usually help more than advertising.

Congrats on the wedding. Signs are better than advertising. I usually have about 8 to 10 signs. But put your address on all of them even if it's small for the farther away ones. I say this because I used to put just Garage sale for the ones farther out & I have had them stolen every time. Because anyone can use them. So now I always put my address even it's its small & then larger for the close in signs. Neon poster board works best and cut it to size.

Also, you can put it on Craigs list. We got a great response from that.

FYI--Putting anything in people's mailboxes is illegal. All it takes is one disgruntled neighbor and you have a felony on your hands. Advertise on craigslist, star telegram or at your local grocery center, community center etc... Most of the time you just have to put signs out & people WILL find you. Good luck!!

Sorry the weather didn't cooperate. We had one today and it was great outside...cloudy and cooler! (But I hate the glaring sun when I'm sitting outside doing garage sales). Anyway...I put my ads in craigslist and put up good signs around the major intersections in town (with bright red arrows pointing them in the direction). Hope this helps!!!

do not advertise in the newspaper because that is target for EARLY birds. people ignore the time posted and will show up prior to the time. i have had friends that had people at their door at 6:00 am-7:30 am!!!!! post around the your neighborhood/church... if it is a good sale then your "shoppers" will tell their friends... good luck.

E.,

I agree with everyone else about Craig's List and the signs at major intersections. Just make sure you have arrows pointing the right direction and if your street is not off a major street make sure you put signs out to show the direction of your street.

Another thing, it is illegal to put things in the mailboxes that did not come from the post office so please don't put your flyers in the mailbox. Add a piece of tape to the flyer and put it on the door frame.

Good Luck with your garage sale!

Use Craigs list to advertise yard sale! I did not advertise in a paper and had overwhelming turn out.

Hi E.,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Your fiance sounds very romantic.

Which paper you use depends on where you live. In Tarrant county, I find it best to use the Star-Telegram or use both. The zip code is important for garage salers who like to hit more than one sale in a day and want to map their route. Getting your neighbors involved is a great idea for attracting more customers. They're more likely to put you on their route if they can hit several sales in one spot.

Good luck with your sale! My neighborhood (Belfort Estates in Grapevine) is doing one that day as well and I'm so bummed that I cannot participate. I will be doing a vendor booth event at Costco in Southlake. Proceeds benefit the Children's Miracle Network.

We posted our garage sale on Craigslist.org and got a great turnout! And it doesn't cost anything. That and a few strategically placed signs the morning of your yard sale should do the trick.

I usually check Craigslist on Wednesday's before the weekend to see if there are any good garage sales offering little boys clothing. So I would say that would be a good resource. If you are in Plano you need a permit to have a yard sale and they have a garage sale website. If you don't live in Plano, you could check other city's website.

Hi E.! Congratus on the upcoming wedding! How exciting!

Personally I wouldn't spend the money on a print newspaper ad. I would put it on craigslist.com. We did that and the Star Telegram and had a ton more people say they saw it on craigslist. The newspaper ads are super pricey and craigslist is free.

Good luck!

You could also post to Craigslist. I don't know if that helps get traffic or not though, never tried it but it couldn't hurt and it's free.

I would say don't bother with advertising. Put good signs up at all major intersections and at your street. You will get plenty of traffic. Don't waste your money on an ad. I am a garage sale person and never look up the ads, just drive down major streets looking for signs.

I would say signs are the best way to go. Make them clear and legible though!! I don't know how many signs I see each weekend that I can't even tell what's going on or where to go! Go out to major intersections to put them up and lead people into your neighborhood with signs along the way. You can make some that just say Garage Sale and your street name, then as they get closer they can have more info if you'd like. We used to use bright colored poster board. But while the neon colors get people's attention, they are sometimes hard to read what's been written on them. So just make sure that your letters are big enough to be clearly read. Big, bold arrows also help.

You might include on some of the signs something special about your sale, too... like if you have furniture or baby items, etc. those simple indicators will help attract people as well.

Good luck!!

Oh, and check to make sure your city doesn't have an ordinance about g-sales. Some won't let you have one two weeks in a row. If they require a permit, the information might be on there. :)

It is indeed against Federal Law to put anything in anyone's mailbox other than your own. It also gets into the tampering laws.

Be careful and good luck with the yard sale
