I took my daughter to an allergist today, to see if they could figure out why she get's bronchitis all the time. Her pediatrician said it was due to allergies. Today they did an allergy test and everything was good. The doc said to put her on pulmicort at night and xyzal, and bring her back in 2 weeks. I researched xyzal and it said it is for 6-11 yr olds. My daughter is 3. Does anybody know anything about this drug?

What can I do next?

Hi T.---It's always frustrating, as a mom, to see your little one be sick all of the time. My oldest had allergies and it seemed that every time she got a cold, it turned into an ear infection. I looked up Xyzal on the internet and found this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xyzal. Seems like your usual allergy med, except this is a new generation drug which means I would question how much it has been tested in children.

Prescription drugs, while very important in some situations, mainly target symptoms of disease and don't address the underlying causes of the symptoms. Has your doctor talked to you at all about how you can strengthen and balance your daughter's immune system so that she is not as susceptible to allergens or viruses? If you would like to know how you can reduce or eliminate the need for these drugs in your daughter's life, please contact me.

I am studying Wellness with a naturopathic doctor who has her PhD in nutrition. I am learning that we can do a lot in our daily lives to reduce the risk of disease by our diet and lifestyle habits. It is recommended that we eat 9 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables, depending on our age/sex/activity levels. I have charts to help determine what you need for each family member. Having said that, even if you eat lots of fruits and veggies, it may not be enough to overcome environmental challenges to our bodies. I have found a fabulous whole food supplement, fruit and veggie juice powders in capsule, chewable or gummie forms, called Juice Plus+. It is far better than a multi-vitamin because it is from whole food. In fact, we know that JP+ works because there are 13 original research studies that confirm positive changes in the body, several of which confirm strenthening and balancing of the immune system.

If you would like to know more about how to get more fruits and veggies into your diet, nutrition insurance as I call it, feel free to contact me at any time. There is no obligation for any of the resources that I share with you. The only thing you have to invest is your time, hopefully learning a little more about how to achieve optimal health for your family.

You can reach me at ###-###-#### or ____@____.com, www.dianeshealthed.com. I look forward to talking to you. In health, D.

Did you ask your pharmacist when you picked up the medication? Or were you given samples? I would be a little hesitant to use it just b/c it is only indicated for older than 6 years old, thus has not been study in younger patients. I would be more comfortable to use a different antihistamine that has a "track record" in pediatrics, such as Zyrtec or Claritin. Xyzal is a fairly new drug to the market, thus docs are very quick to order them sometimes! Don't be afraid to question the doc on it, or call your pharmacist and see what they think. Good luck!

My son is almost 4 now and has allergy induced asthma or even exercise inducted and would cuase bronchitis too and then he would need brathing treatments so he could breath plus oral steroids. Our Pediatrician places us on Pulicort 2 x daily and Singular not xyzal but only 1 time daily at night. He has been on it for just over a year now and it has been an amazing difference in his health! Now if he gets a cold it's jsut a cold not some major issue that keeps him and me down for a week or so. I don't know anything about xyzal but maybe ask about Singular becuase the comb with Pulmicort have been excellent for us. D.

My son's lungs have had a very rough start and he is currently on pulmicort once a day. The doctor said as soon as I start to see a nose drip start doing Xopenex (for the wheezing - or preventing it) so that the drainage doesn't all go to the lungs and sit there. We're hoping this prevents major infections and gets us through the winter. For some of these little ones the bigger they get the stronger their lungs will get. I posted a question on Pulmicort just last week and received some really good suggestions about reducing chemical products in the home, etc. My neighbor's daughter has asthma and they just removed carpet from the main floor and got rid of most chemical products and she says it has made a huge difference.

Xyzal is fine, and it comes in liquid 2.5mg for children. It is usually 5mg tablets for adults.
