Woke with Swollen Eye

Happy new year Moms. My question is WHAT TO DO. My daughter will be 2 at the end of the month. She awoke this am with a swollen eye. It's pink on her eyelid and about 3/4 of the way closed. It doesn't seem to be bothering her. Something similar happened when she was about 10 mons. She had a bug bite close to her eye, and it swelled shut by morning. I don't think she has been bitten by anything. I went ahead and gave her claritin to see if it would help. Normally, I wouldn't worry AS MUCH, but it is her eye. Eyes are sooo sensitive. Shall I wait it out? Claritin hasn't seemed to do anything yet? Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Last night some swelling went down, and you could see a darker area to where everything started, definately looks like a bug got her again. We went to the dr today. She woke with it worse. Dr prescribed Benadryl and an antibiotic. Recheck in a week. If it gets worse, we go back. Last night

Well Dear, have you given any thought to taking this
precious child to the Dr. ? It could be an infection
of some sort...the only thing that comes to my mind is
a boric acid solution, dabbed with cotton, but best to
take this up with a Dr. Good Luck, Dear...

Hi R.,

It seems that it is a case of pinkeye. There is an herb called 'eyebright' that will help clear it up. I would recommend getting the liquid drops and having your daughter take them under her tongue. The problem will clear up in a day or two.

I wouldn't suggest the waiting. She isn't old enough to let you know if it is bothering her or contagious. The pink eye is going around and it is very easy to get. That won't go away with claritin. I'd go on in today and get some drops and be on the safe side. What a way to ring in the New Year! :o)

I know you have already written a "What Happened..." but for my two cents.... This happened to my son just a few months ago. It is NOT pink eye. He is allergic to bug bites! Mosquitoes, ants, etc. He gets them on his legs, arms, hands all the time but at least twice it has gotten him close to the eye. The first time we went to the ER on a Sunday morning. We got antibiotics, which really didn't seem to help especially since we didn't go the second time and just gave him the normal Benadryl. We use the Children's Benadryl Strips that go on the tongue. We cut them in half (okayed by our Ped.) and they work well. Plus you don't want to put Benadryl topical near her eye. Now when we take him outside, we make sure he has bug spray on from neck to toes, but we can't really do his face. So we ALWAYS have the Benadryl Strips on hand.

Try Benadryl. That would probably be most effective.

My first thought was a bug bite, too, because that happened to my son around the same age. If I understand correctly, Claritin is a preventative that needs to be in your system for several days before exposure to an allergen, where as Benedryl helps if you are currently having a reaction, so I would try Benedryl. If it is oozing, I would take her to the doctor because it could be pink eye or something else.

Sounds like you covered it with a trip to the dr. The only thing I have to offer is that if there is ever a problem with the eyes, go straight to a doctor, be it you, your child, your husband, etc.... Eyes are too precious and delicate and the brain is right behind the eye. Infections spread too easily!!!

Good luck!

If it's not Pink Eye or a Stye you may want to condsider the following information.

If she has any type of allergy to pollens there is a chance she could have a small piece of pollen inside of her eye. It has been windy here the last two days. My son recently was riding his 4-wheeler and came back with the entire left side of his face swollen and his eye was completely shut. After several hours of trying to figure out what was wrong and taking Benadryl since it itched and was swollen we used warm compresses on his face and occassionally he would use and eye wash. Then one time he wiped toward the nose and a large piece of pine pollen came out and as soon as it came out the itching stopped and within minutes the swelling started to go down. So thinking of everything from changes in soap, laundry detergent, bug bites, pollens or a food allergy.

Good luck I hope you figure it out. Having dealth with 3 boys with allergies, I know how frustrating it can be.

It sounds like pink eye. You can get a wet, lukewarm washcloth and use it as a compress, hold it on her eye for a few minutes, if she lets you, and see if that might help.

Does the eye have any crusties around it? Do you have a regular pediatrician? I am not a fan of Claritin and especially wouldn't give it to a child so young. You should check with your pediatrician before giving a child 2 or younger any medication. It sounds like pink eye which is a bacterial infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics. Claritin wouldn't be the answer even if it were safe for her age.

Most likely pink eye and she needs drops. It is going around CRAZY right now, my son had it 3 weeks ago. Don't touch your eyes!

Sounds like a stye (kinda like a pimple on her eyelid). The doctor can prescribe polysporin for your eye & they say to put a warm wash cloth on it multiple times per day to cut down the swelling. They happen if she got dirt on her eyelid. Good luck.

Given the circumstances, it would be safer to have your child evaluated by an eye doctor for a diagnosis of the problem. Once the problem has been diagnosed, then seek some appropriate remedies (whether it be antibiotics or herbal solutions)

Sounds like pink eye:
http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infections/eye/conjuncti...

Which you'll need to get some eye drops for from the Dr. It's also VERy contagious so make sure there is lots of hand washing, etc. and clean all of her toys, change her sheets, etc.
With the drops it usually clear up in a couple of days...
