"Winter Cheeks"

Has anybody found a good ointment for "winter cheeks"?
My son is 4 month old and has very bad eczema on his cheeks and neck.
The neck area is even worse since it is not getting enough air circulation(it appears wet)
Any advise will be greatly appreciated!

Hi A.,
I used cortizone 10 on my sons cheeks when when he was an infant. Also I would rotate between the cortizone and just some baby powder in his neck. Good luck!

You did get wonderful responses but just wanted to add on days it is really bad you can apply chapstick right to the cheeks.

Aveeno has an eczema cream that works great. My son has eczema and that is what I use on him. Good Luck!

Hi A.,
Sorry, I guess I am a little late with my response, but here is my two cents anyway =) My son Keegan is 6 months old and though I don't think he has winter cheeks, he is a drooling fool!!!! He is constantly sucking and chewing on his right hand so his right cheek is constantly wet and is now rash-like. My ped suggested breast milk (if you are nursing) and Aquaphor (made by Eucerin). So far the combo seems to work. I put a little breast milk on when I feed him in the early AM so it can dry and my husband puts the lotion on him when he gets him ready in the morning and throughout the day if needed. Hope this helps! Good luck!

My daughter used to get that in her neck and the doctor told me to put a little bit of vaseline on it and it cleared up. Same should work for the cheeks - good luck!...h

After baths I put tons of medicinal ointment and Aveeno lotions. At night, I would slather on the lotions and leave the lotion wet on them and put their clothes on over the lotion. It helped to seal in the moisture so it would soak into their skin. The doctor said that the best way to seal in moisture it by putting on all those oinments and lotions within 5 minutes of getting out of the bath and then putting on clothes.

Some of them state they remove the burn and itch feelilng of eczema. I always tried to wrap up my boys' necks and face when going outside because the air would burn their faces and skin. I think my boys both grew out of most of the eczema symptoms by about 3.5 years old, so you may be dealing with this for a while.

I never found a perfect solution for healing eczema. I tried all sorts of over-the-counter and prescriptions and lotions.

Hi A.-

my son's cheeks have been so bad that they start to bleed. I've found that Mustela's Cold Cream Ultra-Protective Cream works wonderfully. He still gets a bit pink; but, we have no cracking, flaking, or bleeding and he doesn't seem to be sore, at all. We actually use it year round now but twice a day in the winter. It's abit pricey; but, a little goes a long way. We can make an $11 tube last about 4 months. C O Bigelow seems to carry the whole line of products. I've started using their sunscreen and face wipes, as well since my son seems to tolerate their products well. If whatever you try doesn't work quickly, I'd try a pediatric dermotologist, too. They probably have more solutions. Good Luck!

use Aveeno "oatmeal" it will help my son had it

Honestly, "winter cheeks" are sometimes an allergy to cow's milk or soy that the baby is getting via formula and/or through mother's breastmilk (if mom is eating cow's milk products or soy products).

If his eczema is allergy-related, all the ointments in the world aren't going to solve the eczema. Here is a link to a helpful chart - if your baby is exhibiting any other allergy symptoms listed here in addition to his eczema, consider doing a temporary diet change (switching formula for several weeks to a soy-free/dairy-free formula, or if breastfeeding, mom temporarily eliminates any and all soy and cow's milk from her diet for several weeks). Here's the link, from a well-known pediatrician:

Good luck!

aquaphor is really good through the winter months. i use it on myself, my son & daughter. it may be alittle pricy, but alittle goes a long way. just use a thin coat, you don't want to glob it on. good luck & God bless.
