Will Drug Usage Above My Children's Room Seep Through?

My husband and I just moved into a basement apartment. When we moved in no one lived above us, but over the weekend a family of SEVEN moved in. Ever since then it has been grand central station upstairs. When I came home today a strong odor of "Pot" came from the window right above my kid's room. What are the chances of this effecting them. i don't see any vents because we have baseboard heating but can it seep through the ceiling? I am very scared because they are just 4yr and 1yr old. I don't want to become the pesky downstairs neighbor, what are my options? As far as I know they are Section 8 housing and only speak spanish.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I contacted the landlord and as far as I know they are putting them on warning since they have no proof. However the landlord told me that if they do anything to threaten us or if we smell pot again to alert them and they will call the police. I have a feeling they will not be our neighbors for long. They already started to block us in the driveway several times and I know that is against the law for sure. It's only a matter of time. Thanks for the advice.

If it happens again,I would simply call the police out. The people above don't have to know you are the one that called. I would look at it like this. Your children come before anything and you are right to be concerned. I would not allow it to go on. If they are using and or selling drugs that is going to create a dangerous environment for both you and your children. People on drugs can do all sorts of things that they might not normally do, and if they are also selling them then that brings all kinds of drug addicts into your home area! Good for you that you are thinking of your children. Best of Luck!

Drugs can affect your kids and you. Being a pesky neighbor is the last thing you should worry about. I'll go with all the other recommendations on this.

Is there a way you can put in an anonymous complaint to your landlord? I'm sure people around you can smell it as well. Yes, I believe that smell can hurt your children! Make sure it stays anonymous and stress that with the person you place the complaint with!

V. I asked my good friend who is an Officer in SLC, UT This is what she said.

From a police officer........
Call the Police whenever it is actually happening. If the Police can actually smell it we can do more. Other then that talk to the landlord...tell them your suspicions and tell them you plan on involving the Police.

Hi V.,

I am not sure if the drug usage will affect those of your household, but I understand your worry. I would be INCREDIBLY upset if people were using drugs around my children. My advice: I would call the Section 8 program and report what you have seen/smelled. Their drug usage is not fair to you, or to people on the Section 8 program who are following program rules. The Salt Lake County's phone number (officially known as the Housing Authority of the County of Salt Lake) is ###-###-####. I am not sure what Housing Authority they are under, but this is a good place to start.

As far as the possible affects to your children, I would ask your pediatrician or family doc. Good luck and I hope all is well!

We had the same problem about 6 months after we moved into our house with our neighbors, and just like yours they were on housing & mexican. We called the police several times as did many other neighbors. We told the police that we could smell pot & that there seemed to be a little more traffic going through the house that a usual house(probably drug dealers), they told us to call as soon as we smell it that way they may be able to catch them. Just keep calling the cops over every little thing, they won't tell the neighbors who called.

Hi V.-
The other ladies are right, you need to call the police. They won't say who called, but it is your right to have a safe home for your kids. If the people upstairs are section 8 then there should also be some recourse there. Tax dollars are not to help people find a place to hang out and use drugs.

Even if you only smell pot, there could be more going on that you can't smell. I know that it sucks to complain and that you don't want to make them angry, but your kids are depending on you to protect them.

As far as how the smoke will affect them and if it is seeping in, I don't know. I can only imagine that it is not good.

I hope that you find a positive solution. Let us know what happens. Good luck!
